From 1996 to 1999, blood samples were collected from wild boar shot during the hunting season in Crown properties, national parks and the free wildlife belt in the Netherlands. Sera were screened for the presence of antibodies against classical swine fever virus (CSFV), swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV), Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) and Trichinella spiralis. The results of the sero-surveillance system indicate that CSFV, SVDV and ADV are uncommon within the wild boar population. Epidemiologic data on inclusion body myositis (IBM) are scarce, and possibly biased, because they are derived from larger neuromuscular centers. The present nationwide collaborative cross-sectional study, which culminated on July 1, 1999, resulted in identification of 76 patients with IBM and the establishment of a prevalence of 4.9 patients with IBM per million inhabitants in the Netherlands. Several discrepancies suggest that this may be an underestimation. The most frequently identified pitfall in diagnosing IBM was an erroneous diagnosis of polymyositis or motor neuron disease.

BACKGROUND: Several therapeutic options are available for the treatment of vitiligo. Concern exists that there is no uniform approach towards the management of vitiligo among Dutch dermatologists.

In the absence of poliomyelitis the incidence of AFP is around 1 per 100,000 children aged < 15 years. A nationwide survey among all 118 Dutch rheumatologists (response rate 85%) yielded 42 patients with Lyme arthritis. The arthritis was nonpersistent in all these patients. A tick bite was reported by 23 of these 42 patients (55%). Erythema migrans was recalled by 19 patients (45%). Cardiac manifestations occurred in 4 patients (9%) and neurologic symptoms in 14 patients (33%). The history of 29-year-old male from Surinam with antibodies to HIV-1 and long-lasting fever, lymphadenopathy, pain in the right upper abdomen and a granulomatous hepatitis is described. The patient suffered from disseminated histoplasmosis, a fungal disease rare in The Netherlands, which is the indicator disease for the diagnosis of AIDS (CDC-IVCI). It is stressed that in seropositive patients coming from endemic areas, including Surinam, the possibility of this disease should be considered.

The results of a survey on the treatment of hypothyroidism by Dutch internists, working in different types of hospitals, are described. Except in cases of cardiac complications or long-standing disease at old age most patients were treated in the out-patient clinic. A survey of 121 leprosy patients in the Netherlands showed eye involvement in 20% of the patients, rising to 27% if madarosis and the adnexae are included. Iris atrophy was the main lesion encountered in BL and LL patients. One typical lepromatous fundus lesion was seen. No bilateral blindness occurred. Two eyes had a visual acuity of 3/60 due to intractable scleritis and acute iritis in LL with ENL. Seven eyes of 5 patients had a visual acuity of 0.2 to 3/60, mainly due to iris atrophy in lepromatous leprosy. Prevalence of blindness in our series was low as compared with the literature.
