Tracing infant sleep neurophysiology longitudinally from 3 to 6 months: EEG insights into brain development.

Sleep is critical for brain plasticity during early development, yet individual maturation of sleep neurophysiology in infancy remains poorly characterized. Slow wave activity (SWA) is a key marker of cortical maturation and experience-dependent plasticity, making early regional sleep dynamics highly relevant for neurodevelopmental health. We conducted a longitudinal high-density EEG study in 11 healthy infants, of whom 9 contributed analyzable EEG data at both 3 and 6 months. We assessed non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and analyzed the maturation of SWA (0.75-4.25 Hz), theta power (4.5-7.…

Neurophysiology in the mirror: A tri-layer model of mirror movements informed by TMS evidence.

OBJECTIVE: Mirror movements are involuntary, task-coupled contractions in contralateral homologous muscles during unilateral movement. While often described as a developmental remnant or rare clinical sign, mirror movements offer insight into the physiological mechanisms that underlie motor lateralization and interhemispheric balance. This review aimed to synthesize the available neurophysiological evidence-primarily from transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-and propose a structured, mechanism-based framework for interpreting mirror movements across neurological conditions. METHODS: A stru

Disruption of sleep macro- and microstructure in Alzheimer's disease: overlaps between neuropsychology, neurophysiology, and neuroimaging.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia, often associated with impaired sleep quality and disorganized sleep structure. This study aimed to characterize changes in sleep macrostructure and K-complex density in AD, in relation to neuropsychological performance and brain structural changes. We enrolled 30 AD and 30 healthy control participants, conducting neuropsychological exams, brain MRI, and one-night polysomnography. AD patients had significantly reduced total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency, and relative durations of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) stages 2 (S2), 3 (S3),

Neurophysiology of Brain Networks Underlies Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease: A Basis for Diagnosis and Management.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the leading neurodegenerative disorders. It is considered a movement disorder, although it is accepted that many nonmotor symptoms accompany the classic motor symptoms. PD exhibits heterogeneous and overlaying clinical symptoms, and the overlap of motor and nonmotor symptoms complicates the clinical diagnosis and management. Loss of modulation secondary to the absence of dopamine due to degeneration of the substantia nigra compacta produces changes in firing rates and patterns, oscillatory activity, and higher interneuronal synchronization in the basal gangli

Tooth hypersensitivity associated with paresthesia after inferior alveolar nerve injury: case report and related neurophysiology.

Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury is usually caused by stretching or crushing of the neurovascular structures and postoperative intra-alveolar hematoma or edema after dental procedures. This results in paresthesia in the ipsilateral chin, lip (vermilion border, skin, and mucosa), and labial or buccal alveolar mucosa of the mandibular anterior teeth. However, there are no reports of sensory alterations in the teeth, especially tooth hypersensitivity, after IAN injury. I report a case in which paresthesia of the lower lip and hypersensitivity of the lower anterior teeth occurred simultaneousl

Neurophysiology of robot-mediated training and therapy: a perspective for future use in clinical populations.

The recovery of functional movements following injury to the central nervous system (CNS) is multifaceted and is accompanied by processes occurring in the injured and non-injured hemispheres of the brain or above/below a spinal cord lesion. The changes in the CNS are the consequence of functional and structural processes collectively termed neuroplasticity and these may occur spontaneously and/or be induced by movement practice. The neurophysiological mechanisms underlying such brain plasticity may take different forms in different types of injury, for example stroke vs. spinal cord injury (SC

Clinical neurophysiology and quantitative sensory testing in the investigation of orofacial pain and sensory function.

Chronic orofacial pain represents a diagnostic and treatment challenge for the clinician. Some conditions, such as atypical facial pain, still lack proper diagnostic criteria, and their etiology is not known. The recent development of neurophysiological methods and quantitative sensory testing for the examination of the trigeminal somatosensory system offers several tools for diagnostic and etiological investigation of orofacial pain. This review presents some of these techniques and the results of their application in studies on orofacial pain and sensory dysfunction. Clinical neurophysiologi

Limitations of the American Academy of Neurology and American Clinical Neurophysiology Society paper on QEEG.

The AAN/ACNS report is misleadingly negative regarding the current status of quantitative EEG and tends to discourage its development and use with other related clinical problems. There have been many excellent studies showing that QEEG can be useful for the evaluation and understanding of mild traumatic brain injury, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, alcoholism, depression, and other types of substance abuse. In fact, Hughes and John recently provided in this Journal an extensive and detailed review of the use of QEEG in psychiatric disorders. The bias of the AAN/ACNS report

Neurophysiology of abdominal pain: a review of peripheral, spinal, central mechanisms and emerging research trends.

Experience of visceral pain occurs when there is discomfort originating from internal organs of the body, often resulting from injury, infection, inflammation, ischemia, tumors, or neuropathy. In clinical practice, visceral pain is recognized as one of the most prevalent and incapacitating types of pain. It encompasses a diverse range of conditions impacting organs within thoracic, pelvic, and abdominal regions. Specifically, visceral pain of abdominal origin often presents as diffuse and poorly defined sensations of varying intensities. This characteristic arises from relatively sparse sensor

Examining a Common Method of Measuring Infant Fear: Considering Temperament, Neurophysiology, Age, and Sex Differences.

The pre-locomotor version of the Laboratory Temperament Assessment Battery (Lab-TAB) provides one of the most widely used observational measures of fear based on the infant's reactivity to a series of four novel masks. Resulting indicators of facial and bodily fear intensity, as well as latency to exhibit a fearful response, have been associated with maternal reports of infant fear as well as frontal electroencephalography (EEG) reactivity. While these measures have been used extensively since the introduction of Lab-TAB, they are typically averaged across the procedure, and differences betwee

Optimizing Surgical Planning for Epilepsy Patients With Multimodal Neuroimaging and Neurophysiology Integration: A Case Study.

Current preoperative evaluation of epilepsy can be challenging because of the lack of a comprehensive view of the network's dysfunctions. To demonstrate the utility of our multimodal neurophysiology and neuroimaging integration approach in the presurgical evaluation, we present a proof-of-concept for using this approach in a patient with nonlesional frontal lobe epilepsy who underwent two resective surgeries to achieve seizure control. We conducted a post-hoc investigation using four neuroimaging and neurophysiology modalities: diffusion tensor imaging, resting-state functional MRI, and stereo…
