Nevus lipomatosus still imposes diagnostic, categorization, and etiologic challenges. Even though an intradermal adipose tissue is a histopathologic prerequisite, the lesions are clinically divided into classic multiple forms and a solitary variant, which some consider a separate so-called lipofibroma clinicopathologic entity. This further complicates the true prevalence, classification and etiopathogenesis of nevus lipomatosus. Case reports and series studies have reflected either consistent or variable and sometimes conflicting clinicopathologic findings. A few have reported electron microsc…

Nevus comedonicus (NC) is a rare developmental anomaly of the folliculosebaceous apparatus, which appears as numerous dilated papules containing firm, darkly pigmented, horny plugs. It appears shortly after birth and mostly before the age of 10; however, late-onset cases have been reported. There is no gender or racial predilection. Moreover, NC can be a component of nevus comedonicus syndrome, a neurocutaneous disorder with skeletal, ocular, and central nervous system abnormalities. EHK properties in NC are not a common finding and are rarely seen in association with each other. This paper re…

Blue nevus is a type of uncommon benign pigmented lesion in the skin or the mucosa of human body which is featured by pigmented dendritic melanocytes and spindled melanocytic cells. Sinonasal blue nevus is extremely rare. We reported a sinonasal blue nevus case with the background of pituitary adenoma, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hypertension (including endoscopic and histological pictures). Further, the existing literature about blue nevus is reviewed. This paper puts a spotlight on the potential correlation between blue nevus with the endocrine system disorder and provides support for furt…

Nevus comedonicus (NC) syndrome is a condition first identified in 1978. The cause of NC syndrome has been recently proven to be a gain-of-function, mosaic postzygotic mutation of the NEK9 gene. A systematic review of the literature retrieved 43 well-established cases of NC syndrome reported so far. Three morphological variants of NC in NC syndrome emerged: (a) the more common, predominantly comedonal type; (b) "Selhorst type"; and (c) "atrophoderma vermiculatum" type. NC syndrome is mainly associated with ocular, skeletal, and neural abnormalities, most typically ipsilateral congenital catara…

PURPOSE: Choroidal nevus can cause overlying chronic retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) degenerative features, but frank retinal invasion is exquisitely rare.
PROCEDURES: This is a retrospective review of 8 cases of choroidal nevus with retinal invasion with evaluation of clinical and imaging features.
RESULTS: At the time of diagnosis of choroidal nevus with retinal invasion, mean patient age was 65 years. Mean tumor basal diameter was 7 mm, and mean thickness was 2.3 mm. Retinal invasion was ophthalmoscopically visible in all eyes. Related features included drusen (n = 4/8) and RPE fibrous m…

BACKGROUND: Melanocytes are derived from neural crest, and various pigmentary disorders may accompany abnormalities in nerve system or develop following dermatome, suggesting that melanocyte and pigmentation may be closely related to neural factors. There are reports of Becker's nevus (BN) showing linear and segmental configuration, suggesting the association of BN with nerve system. However, there are no studies regarding the expression of neuropeptides in BN.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the expression of neuropeptides and innervation in BN.
METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array of …

Nevus sebaceous (NS) is a clinically common benign tumor and has a high potential to develop into a great diversity of neoplasms of epidermal and adnexal origins. However, it is a rare phenomenon of the coexistence in a single NS with two or more skin tumors. We report a case of a 58-year-old woman with two kinds of neoplastic proliferation including syringocystadenoma papilliferum and trichoblastoma arising in NS on the scalp.

Molluscum contagiosum within a congenital melanocytic nevus has rarely been reported. We report a 6-year-old child with molluscum contagiosum infection arising within an intermediate melanocytic congenital nevus of the thigh, associated with itching and occasional bleeding. Dermoscopy lead to the correct diagnosis, but histologic confirmation with shave biopsy was performed to reassure the parents and allow mechanical removal of the lesions using curettage.

Pigmented mucosal lesions represent a group of rare entities with different etiopathogenetic origins, histopathologic features, dermoscopic appearances, and clinical course. Solitary pigmented lesions of melanocytic origin are uncommon in the oral mucosa, and intraoral occurrence of Spitz nevus is very rare. Here we present a case of Spitz nevus occurring on the hard palate of a 26-month-old boy.

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMNs) naturally evolve throughout life, growing proportionately with the child, darkening, and exhibiting textu … n. We reviewed the literature on this phenomenon and discuss how it might lead to regression of the nevus.

INTRODUCTION: Becker's nevus is a dermatological disease sometimes associated with a malformation such as hemifacial bone dysplasia.
OBSERVATION: A 11-year-old male patient presented with a delayed growth of the left maxillary and dental impactions. At 15 years of age, Becker's nevus appeared on the upper torso, both shoulders and cheeks. Le Fort I segmented osteotomy with an iliac bone graft was complicated because of maxillary dysplasia.
DISCUSSION: The chronology of our patient's cutaneous and maxillary abnormalities was similar to previously reported cases. Conversely, the Becker's nevus…

The blue nevus is a variant of a melanocytic nevus that presents as blue-gray to blue or black papules or nodules measuring up to 1 cm in diameter; it has a predilection for females and can be congenital or acquired. The classification of blue nevi is complex, with biological behavior being benign, borderline, or malignant. The case we present is one of a 40-year-old woman with multiple dermatofibromas that appeared and increased gradually in size during pregnancy. Physical examination revealed three spherical, brownish to red-purple nodules localized on the left leg, right shoulder and right …

Nevus sebaceous is a complex hamartoma most commonly found on the scalp, face, and neck and is often present at birth, although some may be diagnosed later in infancy. We report the first prenatal diagnosis of isolated nevus sebaceous that presented at 19 weeks' gestation as a large and exophytic tumor of the scalp. This case emphasizes the crucial role of ultrasound examination performed with high-frequency probes, which revealed associated diffuse lesions of the face. Identification of such a facial involvement could have a dramatic prognostic impact.

Apocrine nevus is a rare tumor composed of increased mature apocrine glands and ductal structures within a fibrous stroma, located predominantly in the reticular dermis. They have been reported in association with apocrine carcinoma, extramammary Paget disease, and syringocystadenoma papilliferum; less commonly a pure apocrine nevus is identified, unassociated with another apocrine proliferation. Clinically apocrine nevi may appear as solitary or multiple nodules or plaques on the scalp, presternal skin, though they are seen most commonly in the axillae. We describe 4 cases of pure apocrine ne…
