This work reports sampling of motorcycle on-road driving cycles in actual urban and rural environments and the development of representative driving cycles using the principle of least total variance in individual regions. Based on the representative driving cycles in individual regions, emission factors for carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NO(x)=NO+NO(2)) and carbon dioxide (CO(2)), as well as fuel consumption, were determined using a chassis dynamometer. The measurement results show that the representative driving cycles are almost identical in the three largest citi

Aluminium comprises over 8% of Earth's crust and is the most abundant metallic constituent1. Historically, aluminium catalysis has predominantly exploited the inherent Lewis acidity associated with its stable +III oxidation state2. Owing to its uniquely low electronegativity (1.61)-the lowest among p-block elements-and the absence of an inert-pair effect, aluminium presents formidable intrinsic challenges for engaging in catalytic redox transformations. Here we report the redox catalytic capability of a low-valent aluminium species, carbazolylaluminylene3, which carries out a complete Al(I)/Al

Argininosuccinate lyase (AL) has several roles in intermediary metabolism. It is an essential component of the urea cycle, providing a pathway for the disposal of excess nitrogen in mammals. AL links the urea cycle to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle by generating fumarate. Finally, AL is required for the endogenous production of arginine. In this latter role it may function outside ureagenic organs to provide arginine as a substrate for nitric oxide synthases (NOS). Increasing evidence suggests that argininosuccinate synthetase (AS) and AL are more globally expressed, and the coordinate reg

The product of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) vpr gene induces cell cycle arrest in the G2 phase of the cell cycle and is characterized by an accumulation of the hyperphosphorylated form of cdc2 kinase. This phenotype is similar to the effect of DNA-damaging agents, which can also cause cells to arrest at G2. We previously reported that Vpr mimicked some of the effects of a DNA alkylating agent known as nitrogen mustard (HN2). Here we extend these earlier observations by further comparing the activation state of cdc2 kinase, the kinetics of G2 arrest, and the ability to revers

A novel pyrite autotrophic denitrification biological contactor (PAD-BC) process was developed for efficient nitrogen removal in water treatment, utilizing pyrite-loaded rope packings as both biofilm carrier and electron donor. Autotrophic denitrification rates with pyrite sizes of 0.55-0.05 mm, loadings of 2.5-12.5 g/cm, and nitrate concentrations of 7-28 mg/L followed first-order kinetic model, with rate constants of 0.402-0.501, 0.078-0.487, and 0.445-0.484 /d, respectively. Increased pyrite loading and nitrate concentration enhanced nitrite accumulation and sulfate production. The PAD-BC r

Oxygen vacancy plays an important role in catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO), but the inherent drawback of its thermodynamic instability causes the deactivation of catalysts. Hence, improving the thermodynamic stability of oxygen vacancy is a crux during HCHO oxidation. Here, a novel and simple nitrogen doping of MnO2/C catalyst is designed for HCHO oxidation at room temperature. The surface lattice oxygen of MnO2 will be activated by nitrogen-doping, which acts as active sites for HCHO oxidation and solves the thermodynamic instability issue of oxygen vacancy. Furthermore, carbon is d

Biodecolourization of azo dye and removal of ammonium by aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was investigated under different growth conditions. AGS not previously exposed to azo dye was able to effectively decolourize azo dye under anaerobic and microaerophilic conditions. Azo dye, total organic carbon and ammoniacal nitrogen removal efficiencies of 89-100%, 79-95% and 92-100%, respectively, were achieved in the AGS reactor operated for 80days under microaerophilic conditions. Removal of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus was not impacted by azo dye loading. Azo dye, organic carbon and ammonium were m

Shallow lakes in arid and semi-arid regions are vulnerable to hydrological fluctuations and nutrient loading. However, the composition and functional traits of microbial communities and their roles in mediating internal nutrient cycling across the water column and sediments remain poorly understood. Here, we applied an integrated metagenomic framework to investigate microbial community structure and metabolic potential in Wuliangsuhai Lake, a typical eutrophic shallow lake in the Yellow River Basin. Read-based taxonomic profiling revealed pronounced habitat-driven community differentiation, wi

The crystallization of monoclonal antibodies is deemed particularly challenging due to their large size and structural flexibility. An additional challenge is represented by the tendency of mAb crystals to rapidly lose their crystallinity when removed from liquid and exposed to air or nitrogen, which complicates filtration. This study aims to develop crystallization design strategies for mAbs using the caffeine cocrystal of pembrolizumab as a model. Optimal crystallization conditions are identified by minimizing cycle times for crystallization and filtration. Metrics are introduced to rank the

Global warming increases the surface waters and biodiversity in polar regions. However, the intrinsic biological sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Antarctic surface waters remain poorly understood. This work evaluated the sources and driving mechanisms of DOM in Antarctic lakes systematically, based on fluorescence excitation-emission matrices, ultrahigh-resolution mass spectra, biological detection, and metagenomic analyses. The most abundant DOM in the water was peptides (37.02%), which differed from those in soil (lignins: 26.33%) and penguin guano (lipids: 50.71%). The relative

Iron is recognized as a physiological requirement for anammox bacteria (AnAOB), with Fe(II) considered to be the most effective form. However, Fe(III), instead of Fe(II) is the common iron form in natural and artificial ecosystems. In this study, the nitrogen removal performance and metabolic mechanisms in anammox consortia with soluble and non-soluble Fe(III) as the sole iron element were investigated. After the 150-day operation, the soluble (FeCl3) and insoluble (Fe2O3) Fe(III)-fed anammox systems reached nitrogen removal rates of 71.84 ± 0.80% and 50.20 ± 0.98%, respectively. AnAOB could s

Biological removal of nitrate, a highly concerning contaminant, is limited when the aqueous environment lacks bioavailable electron donors. In this study, we demonstrated, for the first time, that bacteria can directly use the electrons originated from the photoelectrochemical process to carry out the denitrification. In such photoelectrotrophic denitrification (PEDeN) systems (denitrification biocathode coupling with TiO2 photoanode), nitrogen removal was verified solely relying on the illumination dosing without consuming additional chemical reductant or electric power. Under the UV illumina

Zinc-based battery performance is often hindered by side reactions, such as dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution, which are closely linked to the desolvation of hydrated zinc ions. This study demonstrates that the coordination microenvironment of zinc ions can be effectively regulated using poly-nitrogen heterocyclic compounds as electrolyte additives. With the composite electrolyte, the zinc electrode achieves reversible recycling for approximately 4000 h at a low nucleation overpotential (∼29 mV), demonstrating exceptional cycling stability. The solvation structure of hydrated zinc ions an

CityU-25 displayed an excellent reversible lithium storage capability of 455 mAh/g after 170 cycles at 0.1 A/g, and an impressive one of 6

Arsenic (As) is a common toxic pollution element. The microorganism-mediated transformation of arsenic forms is an important part in the biogeochemical cycle of As. In the various microbial metabolic processes involving As, the coupling reduction of As has a great impact on the environment and is a process that is easily overlooked. From the biogeochemical cycle of As, this review introduces the microorganism-mediated methane oxidation, anaerobic ammonium oxidation, and iron (Fe)-sulfur (S) oxidation coupled with As reduction. Organic matter, pH, and redox potential are the main factors affect
