Esophageal achalasia is a disease characterized by esophageal motor dysfunction, leading to various symptoms, including vomiting and chest pain. There is no curative treatment for this disease, and the consensus on nutritional therapy or rehabilitation is unclear. Herein, we present the case of a 90-year-old woman with symptoms of esophageal achalasia, exacerbated by secondary sarcopenia and sarcopenic dysphagia after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. The patient presented with chest pain and vomiting while on a soft diet, and esophagography revealed typical esophageal achalasia.

Nutritional support is crucial for the prognosis of children supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). This article discusses the latest research progress and guideline recommendations for nutritional support during ECMO. We summarize the nutritional status and evaluation of ECMO patients, nutritional support methods and timing, trace elements, the impact of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and energy requirements and algorithms. The article shows that malnutrition is high in ECMO patients compared to other critically ill patients, with nearly one-third of patients e…

Sertoli cells play a central role in spermatogenesis. They maintain the blood-testis barrier, an essential feature of seminiferous tubules which creates the proper environment for the occurrence of the spermatogenesis. However, this confinement renders germ cells almost exclusively dependent on Sertoli cells' nursing function and support. Throughout spermatogenesis, differentiating sperm cells become more specialized, and their biochemical machinery is insufficient to meet their metabolic demands. Although the needs are not the same at all differentiation stages, Sertoli cells are able to sati

Previous studies have shown a reduction in lymphocyte mitochondrial complex I activity (CIA) in malnourished patients, which is restored after refeeding. Our aim was to evaluate the usefulness of CIA as an indicator of nutritional status in anorexia nervosa patients. Twelve malnourished anorexia nervosa females (mean age, 24.5 years) were admitted to the Eating Disorders Unit. Basal and weekly anthropometrics, bioelectric impedance (BIA), body composition, and CIA were performed until discharge. Patients were matched to 25 healthy females and refeeding was adjusted according to the Unit's prot

Medication errors are probably more common in neonates than is generally appreciated. In Mexican pediatric hospitals, L-carnitine is mainly used for nutritional support and to treat cardiomyopathy secondary to neonatal asphyxia. Using a longitudinal-retrospective approach we assessed the appropriateness of all L-carnitine prescriptions written during a 12-month period at a NICU of a second-level hospital located in Toluca, Mexico. Reports of adverse reactions possibly related to L-carnitine therapy were collected and characterized. Overall, administration of L-carnitine was considered justifie…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The importance of nutrition is clearly established in the management of the critically ill patient: malnutrition contributes to immune incompetence, poor wound healing, increased postoperative complication and prolonged hospital stay. The interaction between nutritional status, nutritional supply and respiratory function is important in the management of the Chronic Obstructive pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients under mechanical ventilation (MV). In the present study was analyzed the benefits of combined nutritional support in patients with COPD under MV.

A 20-yr-old black male was admitted with a 5-month history of profound weight loss and diarrhea. Appetite and dietary intake had been remarkably well preserved up until the week before admission. The severity of his depletion was evidenced by a body weight of only 38% of standard, multiple electrolyte deficiencies, and reduced metabolic expenditure, protein turnover, protein synthesis, and pancreatic function. Immunological defects included diminished lymphocyte numbers, lymphocyte transformation, gamma-globulin concentration, and cell-mediated immunity. A diagnosis of alpha-heavy chain diseas

BACKGROUND: Patients with an ileostomy are at risk of developing a high-output ileostomy (HOS). An episode of HOS can lead to dehydration and acute kidney injury (AKI). Existing dietary recommendations are largely based on expert opinion. At Charité-Campus Benjamin Franklin, a new interdisciplinary nutrition concept was developed for patients following ileostomy creation.
METHODS: This prospective, single-centre interventional study included adult patients undergoing elective surgery with the creation of an ileostomy between July 2022 and November 2024. The primary outcome was the incidence o

Periodontitis is currently understood as a multifactorial, biofilm-associated, and immunoinflammatory disease. Modern dietary patterns, often characterized by a high intake of free sugars and ultra-processed foods, deviate from evolutionary adaptations and are frequently associated with systemic inflammatory processes. This position paper by the Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP) evaluates the role of nutrition as a modifiable risk factor and integrates nutritional considerations across all phases of periodontal therapy. Available evidence suggests that a plant-based, fiber-rich, and low-su

BACKGROUND: The delivery of artificial nutrition support during acute illness in patients who are pregnant is complex with considerations for both maternal and foetal health outcomes. However, there is little known about the research available to guide the artificial nutrition support during pregnancy. This scoping review aims to examine the literature related to artificial nutrition support practices during acute illness in pregnancy, to understand current research, identify gaps and inform directions for future research.
METHODS: The review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs

BACKGROUND: Animal development is frequently supported by microbial symbionts that contribute to host nutrition, metabolism, and physiology. While the functional importance of microbiomes in adult hosts is increasingly recognized, the role of symbiotic microbes during gametogenesis and embryogenesis remains poorly understood, particularly in early-diverging metazoans. Sponges represent an ideal system to investigate these processes due to their dense and diverse microbial communities. Here, we examined host-symbiont dynamics across the reproductive cycle of the marine sponge Halichondria panic

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined as a group of metabolic defects that include hypertension, insulin resistance, visceral obesity, fatty liver disease, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). The first step in controlling the progression of MetS is lifestyle changes, including dietary modification. Regular consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other plant foods negatively correlates with the risk of developing chronic diseases. Green leafy vegetables (GLVs) are a key element of healthy eating habits and an important source of vitamins C and E, carotenoids-mainly β-ca

Undernutrition-the leading risk factor for tuberculosis worldwide-is associated with impaired immunity, more extensive disease, delayed sputum conversion, and worse treatment outcomes, including mortality. In this Health Policy, we propose a comprehensive roadmap for integrating nutritional assessment, counselling, and support into tuberculosis treatment as part of person-centred care. At treatment initiation, we recommend standard nutritional assessment with anthropometric measurements and haemoglobin estimation, in addition to macronutrient and micronutrient support alongside nutritional cou

Patients who undergo solid organ transplant can have an extensive and challenging postoperative course. The chronicity of the disease state prior to transplant in combination with transplant-specific complications and immunosuppressant medications can lead to distinct challenges that are not observed in other critically ill patients. Although the manifestation of posttransplant complications may be specific to the organ being transplanted, there are common transplant challenges that affect nutrition therapy in these patients. Effects of malnutrition, metabolic aberrations, and posttransplant o

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is prevalent in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and has been associated with worse clinical outcomes.
AIMS: This observational study examines trends in protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) amongst hospitalised IBD and non-IBD patients, and the association between (1) malnutrition and (2) nutrition support and hospitalisation outcomes.
METHODS: We queried the Nationwide Readmissions Database from 2010 to 2018 for hospitalisations with and without IBD. Amongst patients with IBD and concurrent PCM, we identified those who received nutrition support. Multiva

Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy (MNGIE) is a rare, inherited, multisystemic autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the nuclear TYMP gene. This syndrome is characterized by ptosis, external ophthalmoplegia, gastrointestinal dysmotility, cachexia, peripheral neuropathy, and leukoencephalopathy. Our case illustrates a patient diagnosed with MNGIE and cachexia who has benefited from the initiation and maintenance of parenteral nutrition. We highlight the benefits of receiving long-term supplementary home parenteral nutrition under close monitoring for patients with
