Influence of long and short arms of X chromosome on maxillary molar crown morphology.

Although genes on the human X chromosome reportedly influence tooth crown morphology, little is known about X chromosome activation or inact … numbers of active gene regions directly influence tooth germ development in an early stage of human odontogenesis. The later forming cusps, such as the distolingual cusp and Carabelli's cusp, may be affected by this developmental prerequisite.

Disturbances of Dental Development in Cleidocranial Dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the delay in dental development in patients with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) applying a longitudinal approach of maturational stages of teeth. A secondary objective was to examine whether an increasing number of supernumerary teeth influences dental development. METHODS: A total of 38 patients were included, consisting of 13 patients with CCD and 25 without CCD, selected from the Generation R Study. Both groups were matched by age and number of supernumerary teeth.Dental development was assessed using the Demirjian method. Linear mixed models were

Thyroid Function during Early Life and Dental Development.

Children with low levels of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) have delayed tooth eruption, enamel hypoplasia, micrognathia, and anterior open bite, whereas children with hyperthyroidism may suffer from accelerated tooth eruption, maxillary, and mandibular osteoporosis. However, it is still unknown whether thyroid function variations within the normal or subclinical range also have an impact on hard dental tissues in healthy children. The objective of this study was, therefore, to investigate the association between thyroid function from the fetal period until early childhood and dental develop

Timing of dental development in osteogenesis imperfecta patients with and without bisphosphonate treatment.

Bisphosphonates have established their role as medical therapy for pediatric osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) patients. Since bisphosphonates have also been shown to delay tooth development in animal models, we aimed to assess whether the medication has a similar effect on children with OI. In this cross-sectional study, bisphosphonate-treated OI patients of whom dental panoramic tomograph was taken between 3 and 16years of age formed the study group. The patients, 22 in total, had been treated with pamidronate, zoledronic acid or risedronate for at least one year before the radiography. Developme

Dental development of the Taï Forest chimpanzees revisited.

Developmental studies consistently suggest that teeth are more buffered from the environment than other skeletal elements. The surprising finding of late tooth eruption in wild chimpanzees (Zihlman et al., 2004) warrants reassessment in a broader study of crown and root formation. Here we re-examine the skeletal collection of Taï Forest juvenile chimpanzees using radiography and physical examination. Several new individuals are included, along with genetic and histological assessments of questionable identities. Only half of the Taï juveniles employed by Zihlman et al. (2004) have age of death

The development of archosaurian first-generation teeth in a chicken mutant.

Modern birds do not have teeth. Rather, they develop a specialized keratinized structure, called the rhamphotheca, that covers the mandible, maxillae, and premaxillae. Although recombination studies have shown that the avian epidermis can respond to tooth-inductive cues from mouse or lizard oral mesenchyme and participate in tooth formation, attempts to initiate tooth development de novo in birds have failed. Here, we describe the formation of teeth in the talpid2 chicken mutant, including the developmental processes and early molecular changes associated with the formation of teeth. Additiona

A hypothesis: autonomic rhythms are reflected in growth lines of teeth in humans and extinct archosaurs.

A major determinant of tooth architecture is the arrangement of lines in dentin and in the enamel following the contour of the surface. Since the original description of these lines in the 19th century, they have been attributed to recurring events during tooth development. They have also attracted the attention of dental scientists and anthropologists; however, to date, studies of these structures have been largely theoretical and microscopic. We show here that the statistical properties of the spacing between the lines are similar in teeth from both ancient and modern humans and from extinct

Morphology of third molar teeth with incompletely formed apices on the basis of panoramic radiograms.

Third molar teeth are causative factors of many oral pathologies. Lower third molars are the most often retained teeth and the origin of considerable pain. The aim of the study is a presentation of the morphology of third molars with incompletely formed apices on the basis of panoramic radiograms. The material comprised routine panoramic radiograms taken in the years 1996-2000. In the cases where third molars with incompletely formed apices were found, there was determined the location of the teeth in the alveolar process. The angle between occlusal plane and tooth axis was measured, which all

Heterotopic polyodontia in a cynomolgus monkey.

A case of heterotopic polyodontia was detected in a 6-year-old male laboratory cynomolgus monkey. A heterotopic tooth had erupted through the right maxillofacial area at the side of the nose, with a crustated surface. Macroscopically, the tooth was not connected with the right parotid. Radiography and histopathology of the transverse section of the lesion showed almost normal propriodentium containing alveolar bone and partial continuity with the maxillary bone. We believe this is the first case description of heterotopic polyodontia in a monkey.

Early orofacial development.

Early orofacial development is a period of very rapid allometric growth and specialization of tissue. During the first three years of life, the brain achieves approximately 90% of its growth and the face reaches almost 65% of its adult size. Between birth and three years of age the oral cavity changes form and function, replacing gum pads with a dentition composed of twenty primary teeth. By three years of age, all succedaneous teeth are developing as well as the first permanent molars. Involvement with neonates and infants by neonatologists, pediatricians, and pediatric dentists begs a better

Relationship between growth and the pattern of tooth initiation in alligator embryos.

The temporal and spatial patterns in which teeth are initiated in the growing jaws of embryos are constant for a species but different for different species. The sources of the patterns have been explained in two ways. First, they are the outcome of reactions between molecules created at stationary targets and those which diffuse through embryonic tissues (e.g., Edmund, 1960). Second, Osborn (1978) supposed that the patterns mirror the way a (mixed) population of parent cells, the tooth clone, grows. Westergaard and Ferguson (1986, 1987, 1990) concluded, from their observations of the sequence

Delayed dental development in children with isolated cleft lip and palate.

Although most cases of cleft lip and palate are free of other developmental defects, children with isolated cleft lip/palate are at enhanced risk of delayed growth and reduced final size. Three variables were assessed in the permanent dentition away from the cleft site: congenital absence by tooth type (which ranged from 0 to 7%) asymmetry in developmental staging (3 times more common in cleft lip/palate than in controls), and dental age (with a mean delay of 0.9 yr in cleft lip/palate relative to controls). The pervasive nature of these measures of reduced growth potential and developmental c

Effects of acid-base status and fluoride on the composition of the mineral in developing enamel and dentine in the dog.

Developing molar teeth of the dog were sectioned, embedded in copper containing polymethyl methacrylate, polished and their Ca/P and Ca/Na molar ratios investigated with the electron microprobe. The teeth were obtained at 30 days from 9 pups fed regimes of different acid-base status with or without fluoride supplementation from birth to sacrifice at 30 days. No clear trends in their Ca/P or Ca/Na ratios with variation in the diet were observed. However, evaluation of the Ca/P ratio of the enamel as a function of depth revealed that this ratio was 0.80 +/- 0.15 at the mineralization front. This

Third molar changes following second molar extractions.

Third molars, both upper and lower, do usually erupt into the place of electively removed second molars. None of the third molars in this study group became impacted during the observation period. Second molars in this study were removed before the roots had formed on the third molars. The bifurcation line appears to be a stable reference on the panoramic radiograph. It is the Author's conclusion that the extraction of permanent second molars is best for many patients, and when judiciously applied it is a reasonably safe and conservative modality in orthodontic care.

Autotransplantation and replantation of tooth germs in monkeys. Effect of damage to the dental follicle and position of transplant in the alveolus.

The effect of damage to the follicle and of superficial positioning of tooth germs after replantation or autotransplantation was studied in green Vervet monkeys. Radiographs were taken immediately after surgery and 3, 6 and 9 months postoperatively, whereafter the animals were sacrificed. The tissue blocks were sectioned in step serial sections along a frontal plane and histologic and radiographic evaluation was made. Tooth germs whose follicle was either damaged or removed showed no sign of eruption, while tooth germs which were replanted with an intact follicle were fully erupted within 3 mo

Effects of radiation on the developing dentition and supporting bone.

Underdevelopment of teeth after exposure to radiation has been observed since the early experiments with X rays. Two patients had been irradiated at young ages for embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas. For the patient treated with radiation at age 4 for a lesion in the submandibular area, root development of the mandibular teeth stopped, but the teeth nevertheless erupted. In the patient treated with radiation at age 9 for a tumor in the left cheek, bone apposition in the left side of the mandible failed to continue at the same rate as on the right side. Although new megavoltage radiation machines have
