Safety and tolerability of ozonated-oils in liposome eyedrop in preterm eye examination.

BACKGROUND: Eye examinations for ROP screening in preterm newborns are characterized by two main problems: infection control and poor tear secretion. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk of ocular infection and to protect the ocular surface, netilmicin eye drops are usually used after the exams. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of ozonated-oils eyedrops during the eye examination of preterm babies in the screening for ROP, sparing the use of antibiotics eyedrops. METHODS: All newborn infants that needed to be screened for ROP were divided into two groups:…

Comparison of antifungal activity of selected essential oils against Fusarium graminearum in vitro.

INTRODUCTION: Fusaria are microscopic filamentous fungi which are spread in soil, in various organic substrates, and include more than 80 phytopathogenic species which are predominantly hosted by cereals, fruits and vegetables. Many of these species, under certain conditions, are capable of synthesizing secondary metabolites, mycotoxins. At present, various substances are used for their elimination and one of the solutions appears to be essential oils. In the presented study, the antifungal activity of essential oils was researched in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, two standard f…

Application of OXITEST for Prediction of Shelf-Lives of Selected Cold-Pressed Oils.

Introduction: Due to the enhanced awareness of consumers concerning healthy foods, homemade expeller-pressed oils have become popular worldwide. However, an extended storage period may lead to oxidization of the oil and exposure to hazardous byproducts by consumers. Methods: In this study, 10 pressed oil samples prepared from common oilseeds using a small-scale expeller oil press were analyzed by OXITEST with a sample amount of 5 g of oil and an oxygen pressure of 800 kPa under accelerated conditions for shelf-life projections. The oil properties were investigated, including the recovery, smok…

Use of Essential Oils in Veterinary Medicine to Combat Bacterial and Fungal Infections.

Essential oils (EOs) are secondary metabolites of plants employed in folk medicine for a long time thanks to their multiple properties. In the last years, their use has been introduced in veterinary medicine, too. The study of the antibacterial properties of EOs is of increasing interest, because therapies with alternative drugs are welcome to combat infections caused by antibiotic-resistant strains. Other issues could be resolved by EOs employment, such as the presence of antibiotic residues in food of animal origin and in environment. Although the in vitro antimicrobial activity of EOs has b…

Design of novel tacrolimus formulations with chemically synthesized oils for oral lymphatic delivery.

High consumption of oil formulations has been reported to reduce the blood exposure of drugs like tacrolimus. Consumption of oil formulations has also been shown to inhibit T-cell production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) compared to solid dispersion formulations (SDFs). However, a large amount of oil causes gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea and low compliance. Here, we investigated the feasibility of reducing the amount of oil and substitution of chemically synthetized oils for natural oils in these formulations. Reducing the amount of sunflower oil increased blood tacrolimus exposure d…

Identification of highly effective antitrypanosomal compounds in essential oils from the Apiaceae family.

The Apiaceae family encompasses aromatic plants of economic importance employed in foodstuffs, beverages, perfumery, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Apiaceae are rich sources of essential oils because of the wealth of secretory structures (ducts and vittae) they are endowed with. The Apiaceae essential oils are available on an industrial level because of the wide cultivation and disposability of the bulky material from which they are extracted as well as their relatively cheap price. In the fight against protozoal infections, essential oils may represent new therapeutic options. In the present …
