Young children understand how social connections affect what people know about each other.

An unwritten expectation in our everyday social interactions is that intimate personal information about someone-"insider knowledge"-is usually confined within close relationships. For example, it would be odd, or even unsettling, if a stranger knew about your favorite movie. Such expectations about who knows what about whom constitute a cornerstone of complex social behavior, but much remains unknown about their cognitive underpinnings and developmental origins. Drawing on parental report (Study 1) as well as a novel experimental approach using controlled but naturalistic videochat conversati

Differential Pathways from Child Maltreatment Types to Insecure Adult Attachment Styles via Psychological and Social Resources: A Bayesian Network Analysis.

Child maltreatment has been linked to insecure adult attachment. However, it is not yet clear how different child maltreatment types are associated with attachment-related anxiety and avoidance in adulthood; and whether resilience against these insecure attachment styles is dependent on risk-specific resources. Therefore, this study explored differential pathways from child maltreatment types to attachment-related anxiety and avoidance in adulthood and examined whether psychological resources (self-esteem) and social resources (perceived social support) show risk-specific effects. An online su

A network analysis on biopsychosocial factors and pain-related outcomes assessed during a COVID-19 lockdown.

Psychological stress, social isolation, physical inactivity, and reduced access to care during lockdowns throughout a pandemic negatively impact pain and function. In the context of the first COVID-19 lockdown in Spain, we aimed to investigate how different biopsychosocial factors influence chiropractic patients' pain-related outcomes and vice-versa. A total of 648 chiropractic patients completed online questionnaires including variables from the following categories: demographics, pain outcomes, pain beliefs, impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, stress/anxiety and self-efficacy. Twenty-eight vari

Associations between constructs related to social relationships and mental health conditions and symptoms: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and social isolation are increasingly recognised as prevalent among people with mental health problems, and as potential targets for interventions to improve quality of life and outcomes, as well as for preventive strategies. Understanding the relationship between quality and quantity of social relationships and a range of mental health conditions is a helpful step towards development of such interventions. PURPOSE: Our aim was to give an overview of associations between constructs related to social relationships (including loneliness and social isolation) and diagnosed

Navigating the Generosity of Medicines (Gen-MED): characterizing the complex relationships of medication donations in Japan through stakeholder and social network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic and natural hazards increase reliance on donated medicines. However, inappropriate donations (e.g., expired, unlabeled, or poorly matched to local needs) remain common and create negative impacts on disaster-affected communities. In Japan, the coordination mechanisms and roles among stakeholders remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to identify and characterize stakeholders involved in the donated medicine cycle in Japan and to examine their relationships. In addition, this study also obtained stakeholder opinions on our proposed collaborative initiati

Understanding the interplay of social context and physiology on psychological outcomes in trauma-exposed adolescents: a protocol and baseline data report.

Background: Adolescence is a period of increased risk for trauma, with a subset of adolescents developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research has explored the interplay of biology (e.g. heart rate, skin conductance) and social context as critical influences in the early development of PTSD. Prior research is limited, however, by assessments at discrete points and reliance on self-report. Research is needed to model the dynamic interplay of social context and biology.Method: We have developed an integrated ecological method for characterizing biosocial processes using: (1) wristband

A frontotemporoparietal network common to initiating and responding to joint attention bids.

Joint attention is a fundamental cognitive ability that supports daily interpersonal relationships and communication. The Parallel Distributed Processing model (PDPM) postulates that responding to (RJA) and initiating (IJA) joint attention are predominantly supported by posterior-parietal and frontal regions respectively. It also argues that these neural networks integrate during development, supporting the parallel processes of self- and other-attention representation during interactions. However, direct evidence for the PDPM is limited due to a lack of ecologically valid experimental paradig
