Sequence organization of autistic children's play with caregivers: Rethinking follow-in directives.

In this article we use a qualitative method, conversation analysis, to examine videos of caregivers interacting with their young autistic children who are in the early phases of language learning. Conversation analysis involves preparation of detailed transcripts of video data, which are then analyzed together to understand how interactional moves (e.g. talk, gestures, and physical conduct) are linked with prior and subsequent interactional moves. We analyzed data from 15 participants, and focused on instances when caregivers made a proposal about something the child was playing with. In previ

The social information processing model in child physical abuse and neglect: A meta-analytic review.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment has been recently examined from a cognitive-behavioral perspective. The Social Information Processing (SIP) model specifies how parental cognitions can be associated with child physical abuse and neglect and suggests that maltreating parents do not adequately respond to the child's needs due to errors/bias in the cognitive processing of child-related information. OBJECTIVE: This study provides two separate meta-analytic reviews of research exploring the role of parents' socio-cognitive variables in shaping child physical abuse and child neglect, identifying the

Correlation and comparative analysis of the CPQ8-10 and child-OIDP indexes for dental caries and malocclusion.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the Child Perceptions Questionnaire 8 to 10 (CPQ8-10) and child-Oral Impact on Daily Performances (child-OIDP) indexes according to their total and item scores, as well as assess the discriminative validity of these assessment tools regarding dental caries and malocclusion among schoolchildren. A sample of 300 children aged between 8 and 10 years answered the questionnaires in two distinct steps. First, half of the sample (G1 = 150) answered the CPQ8-10 and the other half (G2 = 150) answered the child-OIDP. A week after, G1 answered

Potentially modifiable mediators of the association between child abuse and dementia.

BACKGROUND: Literature investigating mediation of the association between child abuse and dementia has largely considered composite adverse childhood experience scores rather than individual adverse experiences, despite evidence that different experiences have different impacts on dementia risk. Additionally, prior studies consider mediators in isolation, despite known associations between mediators which may impact indirect pathways from child abuse to dementia. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether potentially modifiable health and lifestyle factors mediate the association between child abuse

Child mental health and resilience in the context of socioeconomic disadvantage: results from the Born in Bradford cohort study.

Socioeconomic disadvantage has been linked to mental health difficulties in children and adolescents, although many children appear to do well despite exposure to financial adversity in childhood. Our study looked at the effects of family financial difficulty on children's mental health outcomes (n = 636) at 4-5 years in a multi-ethnic UK cohort, the Born in Bradford cohort. We considered potential parent and child variables promoting resilience in this population. Univariate linear regression was used to identify associations between family financial difficulty measured antenatally and child

Associations Between Paternal Play and Executive Function in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

PURPOSE: Responsive and dynamic aspects of father-child play are associated with behavioral and neurocognitive development in children and could represent an important contributor to executive function (EF) skills for children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). This study examined associations between paternal behaviors during play and EF skills of DHH children and children with typical hearing (TH). METHOD: Father-child dyads in families with DHH children (n = 30) and TH children (n = 29) participated in a 15-min video-recorded free-play session that was coded for parental behaviors usi

Child Maltreatment and Harsh Parenting: The Role of Maternal Chronic Relational Strains.

While prior research indicates that parents who were maltreated as children are more likely to engage in negative parenting behaviors, less is known about how mothers' social relationships may influence these practices. Yet parenting behaviors are influenced not only by the individual characteristics of the parent and child, but also by the social context that exists around the parent-child dyad. The aim of the current cross-sectional study was to test a model examining the effect of mothers' exposure to child maltreatment on harsh parenting practices, as observed in the lab, and the mediating

Child Maltreatment and Substance Use in Emerging Adulthood: Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors at the Transition to Adolescence as Indirect Pathways.

One well-established outcome of child maltreatment is an increased likelihood of substance use in emerging adulthood. However, research identifying the indirect pathways that explain this relation is lacking, thereby limiting substance use prevention efforts for the child maltreatment population. The present study helped address this gap by accessing data from The Longitudinal Studies on Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN; n = 1,136), a prospective cohort study of child maltreatment from birth through age eighteen. Internalizing and externalizing problems at age twelve were examined as indirect

To tell or not: parental thoughts on disclosure of urologic surgery to their child.

PURPOSE: Literature pertaining to surgical disclosure to the pediatric patient is lacking. We hypothesized parents would find it difficult to disclose urologic surgery to a child. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Parents of patients <5 years old undergoing urologic surgery were contacted for telephone survey. Parents were asked about future plans of surgical disclosure, comfort with disclosure, and any support received. RESULTS: 98 parents consented to study participation. 87% of surgeries were on the genitalia with 62% being minor genitalia surgery (i.e. circumcision). 70% of parents would tell their

Parent and Provider Perspectives on the Imprecise Label of "Human Milk Fortifier" in the NICU.

In the critical care of preterm infants, feeding is complex and potentially harmful to an immature gastrointestinal system. Parents have expressed the desire to be fully informed about what is being fed to their child, as this places them in the best position to nurture their child's health. In the parent-engaged setting of the Necrotizing Enterocolitis Symposium, NICU parents expressed concern and confusion about how cow's milk product and donor human milk product both carry the label "Human Milk Fortifier" (HMF). Accordingly, two online surveys were developed to characterize how the label HM

Treatment Options Offered to Infants with Single Ventricle Physiology and Genetic Aneuploidy: A Survey of US Pediatric Intensivists, Cardiologists, and Cardiothoracic Surgeons.

We sought to examine what treatment options were offered for patients with isolated single ventricle physiology (iso-SVP) versus patients with single ventricle physiology and concomitant genetic aneuploidy. Pediatric intensivists, cardiologists, and congenital heart surgeons from the United States were surveyed about treatment options offered to patients with iso-SVP or SVP with concomitant aneuploidy (trisomy 21 [t21-SVP] or trisomy 18 [t18-SVP]). For each scenario, respondents were also queried about what they would hypothetically choose for their own child. Analyses were performed on respon

Parent-Child Interactions in Context: A Comparison of OCD and Non-clinical Families.

We investigated the context role of family factors in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) by comparing observed parent-child interaction behaviors of OCD and non-clinical families during three parent-child discussion tasks. We examined whether behaviors differentiating groups would be consistent across all discussions, or present only during specific tasks. We also investigated the effect of family-based cognitive behavior therapy on parent-child interactions and aimed to identify interaction behaviors associated with OCD symptom change. Thirty-nine children and adolescents (9-16 years old) an

Recurrent meningitis in children due to inner ear abnormalities.

Recurrent meningitis in children is not only a potentially life threatening condition, but often involves the child in the trauma of repeated hospital admissions and multiple and invasive investigations to try and find an underlying cause. Symptoms and signs of CSF rhinorrhoea or otorrhoea are infrequent in these patients. Unilateral deafness may be difficult to diagnose in the young child. Full ENT examination may be normal. We report seven cases of children with recurrent meningitis in whom inner ear abnormalities were only indicated as the site of entry of infection by hypocycloidal tomogra

Bilateral inflamed paratubal cysts.

Paramesonephric duct remnants are an infrequent cause of abdominal symptoms in childhood. Preoperative diagnosis is often difficult and diagnosis is usually made at surgery. We report a rare presentation of an acute abdomen in a child with bilateral inflamed fimbrial cysts. Ultrasound revealed the presence of a multicystic lesion behind bladder. It was only at laparotomy the diagnosis of bilateral inflamed fimbrial cysts was establsihed. These were excised and the child made an uneventful post operative recovery.

Torsion of an indirect hernia sac within a hydrocele causing acute scrotum: case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of acute scrotum in a 2-year-old child caused by torsion of an indirect hernia sac within a hydrocele. This is an extremely rare cause of acute scrotal swelling and pain in the pediatric population, with this case representing only the eighth instance reported in the literature. Despite the scarcity with which this diagnosis has been encountered, clinicians should include torsion of an indirect hernia sac on the differential diagnosis for acute scrotum in a child.

[Differential diagnostic problems resulting from massive doses of vitamin D and suspected pituitary dwarfism in the father of a child with vitamin-D-resistant rachitis (author's transl)].

A 1.8-year-old female child with retarded statomotor development and growth was reported. Radiologically and chemically, a rachitis was found which clearly improved following administration of 600,000 U. vitamin D3. Examination of the father who was thought to be suffering from pituitary dwarfism revealed hypophosphatemia and radiologic signs of osteomalacia. The diagnosis of a hypophosphatemic vitamin-D-resistant rachitis in this child could only be established with certainty during the course of the following months.

Family Psychosocial Assets, Child Behavioral Regulation, and Obesity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little attention has been given to the study of early childhood factors that protect against the development of obesity and severe obesity. We investigated whether exposure to familial psychosocial assets and risks in infancy (1-15 months) and early childhood (24-54 months) and child behavioral regulation in early childhood predict longitudinal change in BMI (2 to 15 years). METHODS: Participants included 1077 predominantly non-Hispanic, White, English-speaking mother-child dyads from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child
