PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Congenital anomalies of the optic nerve are rare but significant causes of visual dysfunction in children and adults. Accurate diagnosis is dependent on a thorough funduscopic examination, but can be enhanced by imaging information garnered from optical coherence tomography (OCT). We review common congenital optic nerve anomalies, including optic disc pit, optic nerve coloboma, morning glory disc anomaly, and hypoplasia of the optic nerve, review their systemic associations, and discuss insights from OCT imaging.
RECENT FINDINGS: Optic disc pits are a result of a defect in

The anatomy and blood supply of the optic nerve head are reviewed along with the variations in normal appearance and the aetiology of so-called pseudo-papilloedema. The clinical features and causes of papilloedema due to increased intra-cranial pressure are discussed along with optic disc oedema from other causes. The conditions of optic neuritis, neuropathy and the ischaemic optic neuropathies are also evaluated.

The homeodomain protein Vax1 is expressed in a highly circumscribed set of cells at the ventral anterior midline of the embryonic CNS. These cells populate the choroid fissure of the optic disk, the body of the optic stalk and nerve, the optic chiasm and ventral diencephalon, and the anterior midline zones that abut developing commissural tracts. We have generated mutant mice that lack Vax1. In these mice (1) the optic disks fail to close, leading to coloboma and loss of the eye-nerve boundary; (2) optic nerve glia fail to associate with and appear to repulse ingrowing retinal axons, resulting…

Two cases of hereditary Morning Glory Syndrome (MGS) with serious damage to the second eye are described. Besides MGS there is simultaneous … and our cases the following can be said of MGS: Refraction and sight can be normal. The size of the optic disk varies between too large and too small. Regarding the morphology, the prominent elevated annulus around the optic disk is possibly identical with that in the case of pseudoneuritis. The MGS can be hereditary, and there may be simultaneous, chronic a …

PURPOSE: To report atypical anterior optic neuropathy due to toxoplasmosis.
METHODS: Interventional case report. A 33-year-old male present … xoplasmosis is uncommon and, when it occurs, usually presents with a white inflammatory mass on the optic disk. The current case demonstrates the importance of including toxoplasmosis in the differential diagnosis of unilateral anterior optic neuropathy, even if a focal inflammatory mass is not apparent.

PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence of optic disc drusen (ODD) and optic nerve head (ONH) morphology in patients diagnosed with normal tension glaucoma (NTG).
METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, we included patients diagnosed with NTG from two glaucoma units. In both eyes, dense enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography volume scans of the ONH by means of standardized scanning guidelines were performed to examine for presence of ODD, and radial ONH scans were used for investigating parameters such as scleral canal diameter, cup/disc ratio and cup depth.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: It has been assumed that visual field defects in optic disc drusen slowly increase with age or occur during adolescence and do not change substantially in later years. In our study, we aimed to validate these assumptions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 255 consecutive cases with optic disc drusen were identified from the patient records of the University Eye Hospital Tübingen; the diagnosis was verified and visual fields were quantified as long as available and of sufficient quality. Additionally, visual acuity was evaluated.
RESULTS: In 104 cases, quantifiable visual fields of sufficient

Serial narrow-band green-light fundus photographs documented the evolution of descending optic atrophy in a case of rapid bilateral blindness produced by a highly invasive osteogenic sarcoma of the base of the skull. Disappearance of the nerve fiber layer (NFL) was observed to take place between the sixth and 12th week after onset of blindness; thus, it is similar to the evolution of descending atrophy found to occur in clinical cases of blindness caused by traumatic involvement of the optic nerve. Parallel to the disappearance of the NFL there was an increase in optic nerve head excavation an

A 6-week-old Beagle failed to respond to visual stimulation. Examination revealed fixed dilated pupils and hypoplasia of both optic disks. Results of electroretinography were normal. Radiography of the skull revealed small optic nerve foramina. Histologically, the outer layers of the retinas were normal, the retinal ganglion cells were scarce, and the nerve fiber layers, optic nerves, and optic chiasm were hypoplastic.

At age 5, a patient underwent fundus photography that disclosed elevated optic discs without drusen. A head computed tomography did not show optic nerve calcification. At age 9, no disc drusen were evident by ophthalmoscopy, but a CT now showed optic nerve calcification. At age 12, optic disc drusen were faintly evident on photographs; visual fields showed blind spot enlargement OD and an arcuate defect OS. At age 21, he had numerous discrete disc drusen in both eyes, disc pallor, and slight progression of the visual field defects. This case documents the progression from anomalous optic discs
