Spectrally Flat and Polarization-Diversified Silicon-Nanowire Coarse WDM Demultiplexers Based on Distributed Multimode-Interference Phase Compensations.

Spectrally flat-topped and polarization-insensitive coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM)-targeted optical demultiplexers based on distributed multimode-interference (MMI) phase compensations are analytically calculated and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed device for use in a CWDM optical receiver consists of a polarization splitter-rotator (PSR) and two identical silicon-nanowire multiple delayed interferometric (MDI) demultiplexers. The broadband operating nature of MMI couplers is highly suitable for applying the proposed device to >60 nm wide CWDM applications. Moreover,

Facile Optical Interrogation for Random Pulse Measurement: Characterization and Analysis of PPG Waveforms Using a Reflection-Based Sensor.

A compact reflection-mode optical sensor was developed and evaluated for noninvasive pulse waveform measurement using photoplethysmography (PPG). The sensor integrates an infrared light-emitting diode and photodetector, enabling real-time acquisition of PPG signals from subjects with diverse ages and health conditions. Despite a limited sample size, the device demonstrated reliable detection of physiologically relevant differences in pulse waveforms. The average systolic amplitude was 105.06 mV, with a mean pulse width of 0.14 s and an augmentation index of 0.19. Notably, subjects with identif

Writing Bragg Gratings in Multicore Fibers.

Fiber Bragg gratings in multicore fibers can be used as compact and robust filters in astronomical and other research and commercial applications. Strong suppression at a single wavelength requires that all cores have matching transmission profiles. These gratings cannot be inscribed using the same method as for single-core fibers because the curved surface of the cladding acts as a lens, focusing the incoming UV laser beam and causing variations in exposure between cores. Therefore we use an additional optical element to ensure that the beam shape does not change while passing through the cro

Development of Optical Sensors Based on Quantum Dots Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Determination of Prilocaine.

Optical sensors are analytical tools that able to provide analyte information. There are several ways to design optical sensors. This chapter presents an interesting optical sensor to detect prilocaine, a medicine, using quantum dots (QDs) combined with molecularly imprinted polymers (QDs@MIPs). This sensor simultaneously takes advantage of QDs and molecular imprinting technology, which enables the optical device to measure prilocaine with high selectivity and sensitivity. To prepare the optical sensor, CdTe QDs were used as fluorescent probes, and an imprinted silica polymer, as the recogniti

On-Chip Plasmonic Slit-Cavity Platform for Room-Temperature Strong Coupling with Deterministically Positioned Colloidal Quantum Dots.

Strong coupling between quantum emitters and optical cavities underpins many quantum photonic technologies, yet achieving this regime at room temperature in compact, deterministic on-chip platforms remains challenging due to the difficulty of fabricating cavities with ultrasmall mode volumes and precisely positioning quantum emitters. Here, we demonstrate a robust quantum plasmonic device in which colloidal quantum dots are strongly coupled to plasmonic slit cavities. Our dielectrophoresis-based positioning technique with real-time photoluminescence feedback enables parallel device fabrication

[Current capabilities of anterior segment optical coherence tomography].

Optical coherence tomography of the anterior segment of the eye (AS-OCT) is a non-invasive method based on the principles of optical reflectometry (measurement of the degree of backscattering of light passing through transparent or translucent media). Limitations of the first devices of this type were associated with insufficient image quality of the details of the anterior chamber angle and the posterior parts of the lens, primarily due to the "working" level of the scanning wavelength (within 800 μm). Fundamentally new possibilities in the structural and functional assessment of the anterior

Oriented Assembly of 2D Metal-Pyridylporphyrinic Framework Films for Giant Nonlinear Optical Limiting.

The development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is of pronounced significance for optical devices. Herein, a series of 2D MOFs ZnTPyP(M) (TPyP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, M = Cu, Ni, Mn, H2) films with [010]-orientation growth composed of ultrathin nanosheets from a pyridylporphyrinic ligand are first obtained by using a liquid-phase epitaxial (LPE) layer-by-layer (lbl) growth approach. ZnTPyP(M) films show a giant nonlinear optical limiting (OL) response and can be modulated by tuning the type of metalloporphyrinic ligands. As a result…

Giant Modulation of Second and Third Harmonic Generations in in-Plane Ferroelectric NbOI2 via MoS2 Atomic Layers.

Probing and manipulating the intriguing nonlinear optical responses in new two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals ferroelectrics are of great significance to the development of 2D material-based nonlinear optical devices. Herein, the simultaneous detection of second-harmonic generation (SHG) and third-harmonic generation (THG) optical responses in a recently discovered 2D in-plane ferroelectric material, NbOI2 is reported, as well as the giant modulation of SHG and THG in NbOI2 by integrating with atomically thin MoS2. Both experimental and theoretical results show that NbOI2, ranging from few-lay…

Hydrogel-Coated Polydimethylsiloxane with Reversible Transparency for Advanced Optical Switching.

Functional soft materials that swell in water often exhibit surface wrinkling, similar to the ridges formed on human skin after prolonged immersion, typically leading to reduced optical transmittance. Surprisingly, there is a scarcity of materials that are transparent underwater yet opaque in air, despite their vast potential in applications such as smart windows, periscopes, and information encryption. Herein, we report a hydrogel-based system comprising a polyacrylamide layer on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), demonstrating a reversible transition between opacity in air and high transparency in

Facile Synthesis of Stable Yb3+-Doped Perovskite Nanocrystals in Mesoporous Silica for Near-Infrared Emission.

Yb3+-doped lead halide perovskites are promising near-infrared (NIR) emitters, but their practical implementation is often limited by poor environmental stability, defect-induced nonradiative loss, and difficulties in achieving reproducible doping and device integration. Herein, we report a mesoporous silica nanoreactor (MSN) strategy for the controlled synthesis of CsPbCl3:Yb-MSN nanocomposites with efficient 980 nm emission. The confined growth environment provided by the mesoporous silica matrix enables regulated crystallization of Yb3+-doped perovskite nanocrystals while reducing surface e

Fluid Jet Polishing of Glass Surfaces to Achieve Nanoroughness for Dust Mitigation of Optical Systems.

Optical components and devices, such as camera lenses, thermally controlled optical surfaces, and solar panels, are often exposed to dusty environments, where particulate matter adheres to their surfaces, degrading their optical performance. To address this challenge, we employed a fluid jet polishing (FJP) technique to fabricate nanoroughness on the glass surfaces of exterior elements, mitigating dust adhesion without compromising their high optical qualities. FJP successfully produced various nanoroughness levels by varying the sizes of abrasive particles. The adhesion forces of fine particl
