Effect of fluoride-releasing resin composite in white spot lesions prevention: a single-centre, split-mouth, randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this two-arm split-mouth randomized trial, was to evaluate the ability of fluoride-releasing resin composite to prevent demineralization and white spot lesion (WSL) formation, during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. METHODS: Patients needing comprehensive orthodontic treatment were randomly allocated into two groups, according to the half split-mouth technique. This trial examined a total of 300 teeth in each group: the control group, in which brackets were fixed with a non-fluoride-containing adhesive resin; and the intervention group, in which brac

Effect of Xylitol and Fluoride Varnish on Biofilm and Saliva in Orthodontic Patients: A Triple-Blind Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Fixed orthodontic appliances are associated with higher levels of plaque and saliva bacteria, which contribute to dental caries. The effects of combining xylitol and fluoride, both used in caries prevention, are uncertain. Thus, this study assessed the combined impact of fluoride and xylitol varnish on bacteria in saliva and biofilms around orthodontic brackets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center, four-arm, parallel-group, triple-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted. A total of 120 patients who required fixed orthodontic treatment were included. Patients were sorted

Synthesis and Characterization of a Sustained Nitric Oxide-Releasing Orthodontic Elastomeric Chain for Antimicrobial Action.

The acidic byproducts of bacteria in plaque around orthodontic brackets contribute to white spot lesion (WSL) formation. Nitric oxide (NO) has antibacterial properties, hindering biofilm formation and inhibiting the growth of oral microbes. Materials that mimic NO release could prevent oral bacteria-related pathologies. This study aims to integrate S-nitroso-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), a promising NO donor, into orthodontic elastomeric ligatures, apply an additional polymer coating, and evaluate the NO-release kinetics and antimicrobial activity against Streptococus mutans. SNAP was added to c

Isolated bilateral molariform mandibular second premolars; a case report.

BACKGROUND: Molariform second premolar is a rare dental anomaly where the second premolar resembles a molar in size and shape. This condition is often linked to macrodontia, a rare enlargement of teeth that disrupts dental proportions and can manifest in isolated, relative, or generalized forms. Although mandibular second premolars are more prone to morphological variability, the occurrence of bilateral molariform premolars, induced by a unique form of gemination, is exceptionally uncommon and infrequently documented, thus making this case clinically significant. CASE PRESENTATION: This case

Early apoptosis predicts orthodontically induced root resorption: inhibitory effects of lithium in a rat model.

OBJECTIVES: Mechanical compression of the periodontal ligament (PDL) is a key trigger of orthodontically induced root resorption (OIRR). Although PDL compression during the early phase of orthodontic force application correlates strongly with OIRR severity, associated cellular events remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed at elucidating mechanisms underlying the initiation of OIRR, focusing on PDL compression and associated cellular responses, and identifying cellular targets through which lithium exerts inhibitory effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven 10-week-old male Wistar

Systematic review of antibacterial effects of nanoparticles in clear overlay orthodontic appliances: advancements in orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Aesthetic orthodontic treatment, particularly with clear overlay appliances (COAs), is becoming increasingly popular. However, microbial accumulation and compromised oral hygiene during prolonged wear may lead to white-spot lesions, caries, and periodontal complications. These concerns have encouraged the exploration of nanotechnology-based alternatives, employing nanomaterials as broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents to prevent or mitigate bacterial growth, especially in orthodontics. This systematic review aims to analyse, summarise, and evaluate the available evidence on the integra

Mesiodens Removal: Resolving the Early Versus Late Intervention Dilemma.

BACKGROUND: This narrative review examines the surgical timing dilemma for impacted mesiodens removal. Early intervention risks iatrogenic damage to developing tooth structures, while delayed surgery may permit irreversible damage to adjacent permanent teeth including impaired root development and eruption disturbances. FINDINGS: Current evidence supports early surgical intervention around 6 to 7 years of age. Recent cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) studies demonstrate shorter root lengths and delayed formation stages in teeth adjacent to impacted mesiodens. Large-scale studies show tuber
