Changes in the craniofacial structures and esthetic perceptions of soft-tissue profile alterations after distalization and Herbst appliance treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this prospective clinical trial is to evaluate the changes of soft tissues and designate the esthetic perceptio … eophotogrammetry, respectively. Pre- and posttreatment profile views were evaluated subjectively by orthodontists and laypeople using the 7-point Likert scale. Intra- and intergroup comparisons for the repeated measurements were performed with 2-way variance analysis. Bonferroni test was used for multiple comparisons (P ≤0.05). RESULTS: Greater skeletal change …

Validation of reported dentoalveolar relationships in the Swedish Quality Registry for Cleft Lip and Palate.

OBJECTIVES: The present study validated data that had been reported to the Swedish Quality Registry for Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) under new requirements from 2016, when use of the 5-year-old (5YO) and the Modified Huddart and Bodenham (MHB) indices for rating occlusion in children born with unilateral CLP (UCLP) was introduced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included blinded study casts (n = 97) and photos (n = 4) of 5-year-old children who had been born with UCLP in 2009-2011 and were enrolled at one of six cleft centres in Sweden. Fourteen orthodontists from the centres assessed the pat…

The role of orthodontics in temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) is the main cause of pain of non-dental origin in the oro-facial region including head, face and related st … ent lasts around 2 years, orthodontic patients may complain about TMD during or after treatment and orthodontists may be blamed for causing TMD by unsatisfied patients. This hypothesis of causality has led to legal problems for dentists and orthodontists. For these reasons, the interest in the relationship between occlusal factors, orthodontic treatment and TMD …

Non-nutritive sucking habits in a child: A clinical protocol to their prevention and management.

Patients presenting with anterior open bites can be challenging to manage. This paper discusses the clinical features and aetiology of anterior open bites caused by non-nutritive sucking habits in a young child. It explores how these should be recognised and how certain interventions can be effective in their management. Whilst further high quality research is needed into the different methods and their effectiveness, the aim of the article is to provide a practical guide for general dental practitioners, orthodontists and paediatric dentists, who are involved in monitoring the developing dent…

Treatment of Class III Malocclusion with Activation-Deactivation Rapid Palatal Expansion and Reverse Headgear in a Growing Patient (Alternate-Rapid Maxillary Expansion and Contraction).

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Treatment of Class III malocclusion is a challenge for orthodontists. The best time to intercept this malocclusion is as early as in the deciduous dentition. Orthopedic management of Class III individuals with retruded maxilla is by protraction facemask along with rapid maxillary expansion (RME). It results in forward and downward maxillary growth and backward mandibular rotation. Alternate RME and contraction (Alt-RAMEC) produces faster and more efficient results than maxillary protraction alone. The present case report describes the clinical application of Alt-RAMEC protocol for the treatmen…

Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorptions: a case report.

Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption is an unfortunate consequence of orthodontic movement. It is an adverse effect of an otherwise predictable force application. The degree of the inflammatory process depends on various factors such as amount of force, bone quality, aggressiveness of the resorbing cells and individual variation. Orthodontists should keep track of tooth movement both clinically and radiographically in order to detect any root resorptions and reevaluate the case. This case report presents the treatment outcome (4-year follow up) of five teeth with different and …

Correction of a superiorly displaced impacted canine due to a large dentigerous cyst.

One of the more difficult situations dealt with by orthodontists is the treatment of impacted maxillary canines. This case report describes an impacted canine positioned near the floor of the orbit that was brought into a normal position. Diagnostic records revealed impacted and displaced teeth resulting from a large radiolucent lesion. The patient was referred to an oral surgeon. The lesion was diagnosed as a dentigerous cyst and marsupialized over 12 months. After decompression of the cyst, the impacted teeth were exposed and orthodontically brought into their proper position.

[Facial malformations and asymmetries due to first and second branchial arch syndromes].

The first and second branchial arch syndrome is a congenital affection, among whom one can range as well hereditary as non-hereditary entities. They always cause a badly mutilating facial asymmetry. In this article, the first and second branchial arch syndrome were divided in hemifacial and bilateral dysostoses. We pointed out the hemifacial microsomia, the most occurring entity in these series. From two case reports, we attempt to give a treatment synopsis of this syndrome, which is always done by a multi-disciplinary team, including dentists, orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons and plastic…

Revolutionizing Class II Division 1 Malocclusion Treatment With Forsus Appliance: A Clinical Case.

Angle's Class II Division 1 malocclusion is illustrated as a prominent maxilla along with protrusive maxillary anteriors, mandibular retrognathism, or both, often leading to functional and aesthetic concerns. Effective management of this condition in growing patients typically involves a combination of functional and orthodontic appliances to correct dental and skeletal discrepancies. Treating this malocclusion in the deceleration stages of growth is often challenging for orthodontists. This case report exemplifies the potency of Forsus appliance in addressing Class II Division 1 malocclusion …

Systemic Factors Affecting Orthodontic Treatment Outcomes and Prognosis-Part 2.

This article explores the various challenges systemic conditions can pose before and during orthodontic treatment. Cardiovascular conditions like infective endocarditis require antibiotic prophylaxis before certain orthodontic procedures are started. Patients with bleeding disorders require special considerations in regards to viral infection risk and maintenance of excellent atraumatic oral hygiene. Orthodontists play an important role in early identification of signs and symptoms of eating disorders and should deal with these patients sensitively. Congenital disorders, craniofacial anomalies…

Maxillary sinus osteoma: A case report and literature review.

This case report describes a rare presentation of an osteoma in the maxillary sinus picked up from an incidental finding on an orthopantomogram that was obtained to inform orthodontic treatment. While orthodontists principally use this radiograph to assess the developing dentition, aid treatment planning and monitor treatment, several peripheral anatomical sites are evident on this radiograph. We review the literature in relation to osteomas presenting in the craniofacial area along with its management. We provide examples of common radiopaque lesions along with their radiographic features tha…

Vertical control of a Class II deep bite malocclusion with the use of orthodontic mini-implants.

To improve the facial profile of a Class II patient with chin deficiency, orthodontists have traditionally used incisor retraction or jaw surgery. Recently, a new technique was introduced that uses orthodontic mini-implants to intrude the incisors and rotate the mandibular plane counterclockwise. In patients with deep bite, heavy anterior occlusal contact can make it difficult to use intrusion for profile improvement. This case report shows the successful treatment of a patient with Class II deep bite and chin deficiency by means of intrusion of the maxillary and mandibular dentition with mult…

Use of rhythmic wire system with miniscrews to correct occlusal-plane canting.

Occlusal-plane canting is a challenging problem for orthodontists because it cannot be solved easily without surgical intervention. Normally, a LeFort I osteotomy and concomitant mandibular surgery is used to correct the problem, even in patients with mild facial asymmetry but with noticeable occlusal-plane canting. Skeletal anchorage can be used in patients with occlusal canting to reduce the need for orthognathic surgery. The purpose of this article was to introduce a biomechanical system-rhythmic wire- to correct occlusal-plane canting. The records of 2 patients treated with this system are…

[Surgical and Orthodontic Treatment of Impacted Canines: A Clinical Report].

Impaction of tooth can be defined as a failure of a tooth to emerge usually due to insufficient space or the presence of a supernumerary tooth blocking its path of eruption. Impaction of the canines deserves particular attention due to their importance regarding occlusal stability and aesthetic. A case of a young girl who presented with an impaction of both upper canines and the lower left canine is reported here. Good therapeutic results have been obtained after 18 month of treatment with a multidisciplinary team involving oral surgeons, periodontists and orthodontists.

Adolescent dentistry: multidisciplinary treatment for the cleft lip/palate patient.

Congenital labiomaxillary clefts result from the absence or incomplete fusion of the maxillary and medial nasal processes with resultant hard and soft tissue defects. Comprehensive treatment of these defects requires the collaborative efforts of surgeons, orthodontists, restorative clinicians, and laboratory technicians. Precise periodontal and orthodontic treatments must be carefully coordinated with the restorative plan to ensure sufficient space and tissue architecture for the definitive restorations. This article describes the multidisciplinary treatment of a cleft lip/palate patient using…

Prosthetic considerations in the restoration of orthodontically treated maxillary lateral incisors to replace missing central incisors: a clinical report.

The treatment of young patients with missing maxillary incisors poses a challenge to prosthodontists and orthodontists. The 2 principal treatment options are (1) the reopening or maintenance of space for future autotransplantation and/or prosthodontic restoration of the missing teeth, or (2) total orthodontic space closure, followed by prosthodontic modification of the lateral incisors to simulate the central incisors. This article discusses only the second option and describes 2 alternative methods for the modification of crown anatomy. These procedures facilitate the orthodontic closure of m…
