The use of ionizing radiation during cardiac catheterization procedures poses risks to patients and medical staff, both directly and indirectly through orthopedic injuries caused by lead aprons. In this review, we summarize recent advances in radiation protection in the cardiac catheterization laboratory and discuss the effectiveness of traditional and novel radiation protection strategies and equipment.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a traditional operative procedure in the treatment of osteoarthritis. The hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) provides an alternative to the THA for young active patients. HRA is a bone-preserving procedure eliminating the problem of proximal femoral stress shielding and osteolysis associated to THA. Unfortunately, there is no standardized methodology to monitor the quality of bone after HRA. In this study, areal bone mineral density (BMD) in the operated hip (10 regions of interests [ROIs] of 34 volunteered HRA patients) was measured using Lunar Prodigy dual-ene

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is an inherited progressive neurologic disorder often diagnosed by the characteristic cavovarus feet. In the pediatric population, the presentation is often more variable and age dependent. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons may be referred patients for the evaluation of musculoskeletal symptoms that may be consistent with early CMT, but because of the lack of the surgeon's familiarity, the diagnosis may be delayed or missed. We present three patients with pes planovalgus who were found to have CMT and review the recent literature relevant to the pediatric orthoped

Lesion to subcutaneous nerves is a well-known risk of orthopedic surgery and a significant cause of postoperative pain and dissatisfaction in patients. High-resolution ultrasound can be used to visualize the vast majority of small subcutaneous nerves of the upper and lower limbs. Ultrasound detects nerve abnormalities such as focal hypoechoic thickening, stump neuroma, and scar encasement, and provides information not only about the peripheral nerve itself but also about its relationship to adjacent anatomical structures. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the anatomy of t

Two samples of complete cleft cases between five and seven years of age are compared (11 UCLP + 9 BCLP versus 21 UCLP + 12 BCLP). The same early orthopedic procedures were applied to all cases, but surgical management differed for the two groups: "classical" surgery (lip 3 months, palate 2--2 1/2 years) versus delayed conservative surgery (lip 6 months, soft palate 18 months, hard palate 6--8 years). It is evident that early maxillary orthopedic treatment is of little consequence for long-term development unless concomitant surgery complies with growth and functional requirements. In contrast …

BACKGROUND: During major orthopedic procedures, such as posterior spinal fusion (PSF), isotonic fluids, colloids, starches, or gelatins are commonly used to replace the preoperative fluid deficit and provide ongoing fluid resuscitation. Given recent concerns regarding the potential adverse physiologic effects of albumin solutions, we have modified our intraoperative practice to include the use of a novel 2% buffered hypertonic saline solution during major orthopedic procedures. We present our preliminary clinical experience with this novel fluid for intraoperative resuscitation and its impact …

BACKGROUND: The aim of this network meta-analysis (NMA) was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravenous (IV) Meloxicam 30 mg (MIV), an investigational non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and certain other IV non-opioid analgesics for moderate-severe acute postoperative pain.
METHODS: We searched PubMed and CENTRAL for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) (years 2000-2019, adult human subjects) of IV non-opioid analgesics (IV NSAIDs or IV Acetaminophen) used to treat acute pain after abdominal, hysterectomy, bunionectomy or orthopedic procedures. A Bayesian NMA was conducted in …

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers have a high impact on mobility and daily functioning and lead to high treatment costs, for example, by hospitalization and amputation. To prevent (re)ulcerations, custom-made orthopedic shoes are considered essential. However, adherence to wearing the orthopedic shoes is low, and improving adherence was not successful in the past. We propose a novel care approach that combines motivational interviewing (MI) with a digital shoe-fitting procedure to improve adherence to orthopedic shoes. The aim of this trial is to assess the (cost-)effectiveness of this novel ca

Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are changing the way orthopedic surgery is performed and taught. This review, conducted using a systematic review approach, looks at how these technologies are being used today, what benefits they bring, what challenges remain, and how they may shape the future. The study focuses on two main areas: surgical improvements and medical training. In surgery, tools such as robotic navigation, motion control systems, and smart prediction models help doctors work with greater accuracy. In education, simulation platforms and AI support systems are giving traine

OBJECTIVE: Patient feedback surveys provide important insight into patient outcomes, satisfaction, and perioperative needs. Recent critiques have questioned provider-initiated surveys and their capacity to accurately gauge patient perspectives due to intrinsic biases created by question framing. In this study, the authors sought to evaluate provider-independent, patient-controlled social media Instagram posts in order to better understand the patient experience following scoliosis correction surgery.
METHODS: Twitter and Instagram were queried for posts with two tagged indicators, #scoliosiss

Congenital limb duplications include pre- and post-axial polydactyly, central polydactyly, and the mirror-hand spectrum. Treatment of these duplications constitutes a significant functional and aesthetic challenge for the reconstructive hand surgeon. This article provides an inclusive review of the embryologic and molecular mechanisms underlying these deformities and focuses on their clinical treatment. The anatomic variation, classification, surgical treatment, and outcomes of surgical intervention are reviewed for each of the disorders of duplication.
