Osteogenesis imperfecta is a heritable disorder of bone formation resulting in low bone mass and a propensity to fracture. It exhibits a broad range of clinical severity, ranging from multiple fracturing in utero and perinatal death to normal adult stature and a low fracture incidence. The disorder is currently classified into seven types based on differences in clinical presentation and bone architecture. Mutation in one of the type I collagen genes is commonly associated with osteogenesis imperfecta, but is not a prerequisite for the diagnosis. Indeed, the newer forms of osteogenesis imperfe

Primary hip disorders, such as congenital hip dislocation, have rarely been reported in children with osteogenesis impefecta (OI). Protrusio acetabuli and coxa vara secondary to severe osteopenia and recurrent fractures are common. Perthes' disease in association with osteogenesis imperfecta has not been reported previously. Epiphyseal and growth plate changes may occur in the more severe forms of OI. There was no evidence of growth plate disruption or severe osteopenia in our case. Approximately two-thirds of OI patients have a tendency to bleed easily but the association of clotting and blee

The combination of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and osteosarcoma is rare, as reflected by the fact that there are only eight proven cases in the published English literature. We present here another case, one that was treated by modern oncological techniques and major limb salvage surgery in the form of distal femur endoprosthesis initially and later a total femur replacement. The patient is the only one of the series to have had major limb salvage and is the only--and longest--surviving patient (more than 6 years), thus disproving the probability that this combination of disorders is particul

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders chiefly affecting type I collagen, resulting in bone fragility responsible for a host of recurrent fractures. Limb and spine deformities, growth failure and restricted mobility are the end-result in severe cases. Cyclical intermittent intravenous infusions of pamidronate, a potent inhibitor of bone resorption, have yielded substantial improvement in chronic pain, bone mineral density, fracture rate and mobility without significant side effects. The role of growth hormone and bone marrow transplantation in the treatment of

Cubitus varus deformity in thirty children was corrected by gradual medial opening wedge osteotomy. The osteotomy was stabilized and distracted by simple external fixator-cum-distractor. The patients of both sexes and age from 6 to 14 years, had varus deformity from 17 degrees to 43 degrees. We achieved good to excellent results in 28 cases as regards to correction of deformity and range of motion at elbow joint. None of the cases had neurological deficit or permanent stiffness. One case had fair result due to under-correction and another case had a poor result as osteotomy united before corre

Osteogenesis Imperfecta ordinarily leads to an early death. Survival to age 30 is unusual. In this case the patient achieved some pleasure in life, was reported to be of normal intellectual capacity, and proved capable of great skill in certain crafts. He truly lived his life and his last years were made possible by skills of his home health care team, the devotion of his mother, and his own determination, humor, defiance, and toughness of character.

A 65-year-old woman presented with vertebral fractures of the lumbar spine and a history of pathological fractures following minor trauma, which had occurred before the onset of menopause. Her past medical history was significant for intermittent low back pain since childhood, which was attributed to thoracolumbar scoliosis. A diagnosis of unclassifiable osteoporosis was made until invasive diagnostic procedures suggested a mild form of type I osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). In unclear or atypical perimenopausal osteoporosis and diagnosis of OI should be considered.

Distraction osteogenesis (DO) of facial bones is a recent development in the treatment of pediatric patients. The use of DO in current clinical practice of pediatric reconstructive surgery is primarily limited to severe deformities of the lower jaw, most of which are congenital in nature. Clinical experience with DO for early facial deformities remains limited, and no authoritative works are currently available to guide clinicians in the techniques or indications for DO of the facial skeleton.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), or the Van der Hoeve-de Kleyn syndrome, is a heterogeneous group of connective tissue disorders. The key features in this disease are bone fragility with a tendency to spontaneous fractures and deformations. The classical traid of symptoms involves a conductive and/or sensorineural hearing impairment together with a tendency to spontaneous bone fractures and blue sclerae. Between January 1988 and December 1994, ear surgery was performed on eight ears of six OI patients who presented with mixed hearing loss preoperatively. Pathological changes observed in the middl

Bone mineral content (BMC) in the radius of 23 osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) patients (1-26 yr) was measured with SPA technique. Comparing the values of OI type I. patients with that of type III. patients, the decrease of BMC was more prominent in the latter group, however, the two group hadn't been distinct from each other at p < 0.05 level. Based on the measurements of 39 relatives (mother, father, brother) the method seems not to be helpful in screening of gene-carrying relatives because of the high variability of the phenotype of the disease. Follow-up SPA studies-avoiding the repositioning

Eight calves with osteogenesis imperfecta were born in a Danish Holstein-Friesian herd during a two-year period. In total 92 calves were born (84 normal), and all were sired by a clinically normal Holstein-Friesian bull. The defect was probably due to a de novo dominant mutation present as a gonadal mosaicism in the bull. Affected calves were characterised by multiple fractures, congenital bone deformations, general joint laxity, dentinogenesis imperfecta, and light blue sclerae. The skin seemed normal. Electron microscopical studies revealed slightly decreased average diameter of cutaneous co

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a heterogeneous group of disorders of type I collagen with both lethal and nonlethal forms. Prenatal sonographic findings in affected fetuses are variable and depend on the severity of the disease. Six cases of osteogenesis imperfecta in which prenatal sonography had been performed were reviewed. Two cases of lethal type II osteogenesis imperfecta revealed short femurs at 16 to 17 weeks' gestation with development of bowing and fractures by 19 weeks' gestation. Four fetuses with the nonlethal type III or IV had femoral bowing with or without shortening in the late se

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogenous group of inherited conditions arising from a variety of biochemical and morphological collagen defects. We report 2 cases with a clinical diagnosis of OI. The first case was classified as Silence type IIA. He was delivered at 38 weeks' gestation with severe bowing of long bones, blue sclera and craniotabes at birth. Radiographs showed severe generalized osteoporosis, broad and crumpled long bones, beading ribs and poorly mineralized skull. Histological examination of the long bones revealed the trabecula of the calcified cartilage with an abnormal

Osteogenesis imperfecta, an inherited disorder of connective tissues, affects roughly (OI) 4000 people in Germany (11). The main clinical symptoms are fragile bones, progressing skeletal deformities, generalized osteoporosis and short stature. Incidentally, the clinical manifestations can range from perinatal lethal forms to phenotypical normal adults. In many instances the underlying causes of the disease are mutations in gene coding for collagen I, the predominant protein in most connective tissues. Fracture healing is usually not impaired, although in a unique group of OI-patients, a tumor-

Deciduous and permanent teeth from seven patients with five different osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) syndromes and three normal subjects were demineralized with ethanolic trimethylammonium EDTA, enzymatically pretreated and immunostained with antihuman plasma fibronectin (FN) sera. Staining for FN in the dentin matrix was positive in halo and reticular patterns in the one patient with Sillence type I B OI and in two patients of three with type IV B OI, all with dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI). The staining was negative in type I A OI without DI, in type III, in one patient with type IV B, and in
