Oxygen reserve index versus conventional peripheral oxygen saturation for prevention of hypoxaemia: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxaemia occurs frequently during paediatric laryngeal microsurgery. OBJECTIVE: The oxygen reserve index is a noninvasive and continuous parameter to assess PaO2 levels in the range of 100 to 200 mmHg. It ranges from 0 to 1.0. We investigated whether monitoring the oxygen reserve index can reduce the incidence of SpO2 90% or less. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial. SETTING: A tertiary care paediatric hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Paediatric patients aged 18 years or less scheduled to undergo laryngeal microsurgery. INTERVENTION: The patients were randomly allocated to the oxygen

Inhibition of Extracellular Enzyme Activity by Reactive Oxygen Species upon Oxygenation of Reduced Iron-Bearing Minerals.

The dual roles of minerals in inhibiting and prolonging extracellular enzyme activity in soils and sediments are governed by enzyme adsorption to mineral surfaces. Oxygenation of mineral-bound Fe(II) generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), yet it is unknown whether and how this process alters the activity and functional lifespan of extracellular enzymes. Here, the effect of mineral-bound Fe(II) oxidation on the hydrolytic activity of a cellulose-degrading enzyme β-glucosidase (BG) was studied using two pre-reduced Fe-bearing clay minerals (nontronite and montmorillonite) and one pre-reduced i

Measured Oxygen Consumption During Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization is More Accurate than Assumed Oxygen Consumption.

When calculating cardiac index (C.I.) by the Fick method, oxygen consumption (VO2) is often unknown, so assumed values are typically used. This practice introduces a known source of inaccuracy into the calculation. Using a measured VO2 (mVO2) from the CARESCAPE E-sCAiOVX module provides an alternative that may improve accuracy of C.I. calculations. Our aim is to validate this measurement in a general pediatric catheterization population and compare its accuracy with assumed VO2 (aVO2). mVO2 was recorded for all patients undergoing cardiac catheterization with general anesthesia and controlled

Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation With Concomitant Impella Versus Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Cardiogenic Shock.

There are contrasting data on concomitant Impella device in cardiogenic shock patients treated with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) (ECPELLA). This study sought to compare early mortality in patients with cardiogenic shock treated with ECPELLA in comparison to VA ECMO alone. We reviewed the published literature from 2000 to 2018 for randomized, cohort, case-control, and case series studies evaluating adult patients requiring VA ECMO for cardiogenic shock. Five retrospective observational studies, representing 425 patients, were included. Venoarterial extracorporeal m

Non-Invasive Monitoring of Oxygen Tension and Oxygen Transport Inside Subcutaneous Devices After H2S Treatment.

Medical devices for cell therapy can be improved through prevascularization. In this work we study the vascularization of a porous polymer device, previously used by our group for pancreatic islet transplantation with results indicating improved glycemic control. Oxygen partial pressure within such devices was monitored non-invasively using an optical technique. Oxygen-sensitive tubes were fabricated and placed inside devices prior to subcutaneous implantation in nude mice. We tested the hypothesis that vascularization will be enhanced by administration of the pro-angiogenic factor hydrogen su

Impact of hyperventilation and apnea on myocardial oxygenation in patients with obstructive sleep apnea - An oxygenation-sensitive CMR study.

BACKGROUND: Oxygenation-sensitive cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (OS-CMR) is an emerging technique that can monitor changes in myocardial oxygenation in vivo. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with endothelial and microcirculatory dysfunction and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Little is known about myocardial responses to apnea in patients with OSAS. We hypothesized that the coronary vascular response to hyperventilation and long breath-hold is diminished in patients with OSAS when compared to healthy volunteers. METHODS: Twenty-nine OSAS pati

In vitro oxygen exposure promotes maturation of the oxygen sensitive contraction in pre-term chicken ductus arteriosus.

The ductus arteriosus (DA) are O2-sensitive, embryonic blood vessels that serve as a right-to-left shunt in developing avian embryos. Prior to internal pipping, the chicken DA produces a weak O2-induced contraction. During hatching, the O2-sensitivity of the avian DA vessels increases significantly. To see if we could accelerate the maturation of chicken DA O2-sensitivity, we exposed the vessel in vitro to elevated O2 (25 kPa) for 3-h prior to internal pipping on day 19 of incubation. The DA initially responded to increasing O2 with a weak contraction (0.15±0.04 N/m) that significantly increas

Developments in Synthetic Application of Selenium(IV) Oxide and Organoselenium Compounds as Oxygen Donors and Oxygen-Transfer Agents.

A variety of selenium compounds were proven to be useful reagents and catalysts for organic synthesis over the past several decades. The most interesting aspect, which emerged in recent years, concerns application of hydroperoxide/selenium(IV) oxide and hydroperoxide/organoselenium catalyst systems, as "green reagents" for the oxidation of different organic functional groups. The topic of oxidations catalyzed by organoselenium derivatives has rapidly expanded in the last fifteen years This paper is devoted to the synthetic applications of the oxidation reactions mediated by selenium compounds

Kinetic analysis of nitroxide radical formation under oxygenated photolysis: toward quantitative singlet oxygen topology.

Reaction kinetics for two sterically hindered secondary amines with singlet oxygen have been studied in detail. A water soluble porphyrin sensitizer, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-sulfunatophenyl)-21,23H-porphyrin (TPPS), was irradiated in oxygenated aqueous solutions containing either 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-4-one (TMPD) or 4-[N,N,N-trimethyl-ammonium]-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl chloride (N-TMPCl). The resulting sensitization reaction produced singlet oxygen in high yield, ultimately leading to the formation of the corresponding nitroxide free radicals (R2NO) which were detected using stead

Evaluation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for free flaps using planar optical oxygen sensors. Preliminary results.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine if a) hyperbaric oxygen increases the tissue oxygenation of free flaps and b) verification of this effect is possible by using a recently validated and innovative method for two-dimensional pO₂ measurement (Luminescence lifetime imaging = LLI). METHODS: Six patients with a free parascapular flap transplanted to the lower limb received hyperbaric oxygen (HBOT) therapy. The HBOT regimen consisted of treatment over 90 minutes with 100% O₂ (FiO₂ 1.0) at 240 kPa (Marx-Schema). The transcutaneous oxygen partial pressure (ptcO₂) was measured over the

Effect of oxygen partial pressure and chemical oxygen demand loading on the biofilm properties in membrane-aerated bioreactors.

Membrane-aerated biofilms with oxygen and nutrients diffusing from the opposite sides possess distinct properties, including the ability to couple aerobic and anaerobic processes. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of oxygen partial pressure and chemical oxygen demand (COD) loading on biofilm properties. Two laboratory-scale membrane-aerated bioreactors were operated for a total of 283 days, with one reactor operated at 42, 60, and 89 kPa (0.41, 0.59, and 0.88 atm) oxygen, and the other reactor at 25 kPa (0.25 atm) oxygen (air control). The biofilm detached at the oxygen pa

Resuscitation of preterm infants with reduced oxygen results in less oxidative stress than resuscitation with 100% oxygen.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of the level of inhaled oxygen during resuscitation on the levels of free radicals and anti-oxidative capacity in the heparinized venous blood of preterm infants. Forty four preterm infants <35 weeks of gestation with mild to moderate neonatal asphyxia were randomized into two groups. The first group of infants were resuscitated with 100% oxygen (100% O(2) group), while in the other group (reduced O(2) group), the oxygen concentration was titrated according to pulse oximeter readings. We measured total hydroperoxide (TH) and redox potent

Supplemental oxygen, but not supplemental crystalloid fluid, increases tissue oxygen tension in healthy and anastomotic colon in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Low tissue oxygen tension is an important factor leading to the development of wound dehiscence and anastomotic leakage after colon surgery. We tested whether supplemental fluid and supplemental oxygen can increase tissue oxygen tension in healthy and injured, perianastomotic, and anastomotic colon in an acutely instrumented pig model of anastomosis surgery. METHODS: Sixteen Swiss Landrace pigs were anesthetized (isoflurane 0.8%-1%) and their lungs ventilated. The animals were randomly assigned to low fluid treatment ("low" group, 3 mL x kg(-1) x h(-1) lactated Ringer's solution)

Profiles of hemodynamics and oxygen transport derived by using continuous measured oxygen consumption after the Norwood procedure.

OBJECTIVES: The lack of accurate measurement of hemodynamics and oxygen transport has limited our understanding of Norwood physiology and postoperative management. We used measured oxygen consumption to characterize hemodynamics and oxygen transport after the classic Norwood procedure. METHODS: Fourteen neonates had continuous respiratory mass spectrometry to measure oxygen consumption (VO2). Arterial, superior vena caval, and pulmonary venous saturations were measured at 2- to 4-hour intervals for 72 hours postoperatively. Systemic (Qs) and pulmonary (Qp) blood flows, systemic vascular resis

Hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier provides heterogeneous microvascular oxygenation in heart and gut after hemorrhage in pigs.

BACKGROUND: In this study, the hypothesis was tested that resuscitation with hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) affects the oxygenation of the microcirculation differently between and within organs. To this end, we tested the influence of the volume of an HBOC on the microcirculatory oxygenation of the heart and the gut serosa and mucosa in a porcine model of hemorrhage. METHODS: In anesthetized open-chested pigs (n = 24), a controlled hemorrhage (30 mL/kg over 1 hour) was followed by resuscitation with 10, 20, or 30 mL/kg diaspirin-crosslinked hemoglobin (DCLHb) or isovolemic resuscita
