Effectiveness of spontaneous pain coping strategies for acute pain management: A laboratory study.

The aim of the present study has been to analyze the relationship between the use of not previously trained, diverse acute pain coping strategies and levels of pain intensity and pain tolerance in a group of healthy participants. Previous research has analyzed the usefulness of the training of these strategies after several training sessions, but adequate patient training requires a great deal of time. Two hundred and forty healthy people participated in the study. Pain coping strategies was evaluated with a version of CSQ-S. Subsequently, the participants completed a cold pressor test and tol

[Pediatric perioperative systemic pain therapy: Austrian interdisciplinary recommendations on pediatric perioperative pain management].

BACKGROUND: Many analgesics used in adult medicine are not licensed for pediatric use. Licensing limitations do not, however, justify that children are deprived of a sufficient pain therapy particularly in perioperative pain therapy. The treatment is principally oriented to the strength of the pain. Due to the degree of pain caused, intramuscular and subcutaneous injections should be avoided generally. NON-OPIOIDS: The basis of systemic pain therapy for children are non-opioids and primarily non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They should be used prophylactically. The NSAIDs are c

Acute pain management in patients with fibromyalgia and other diffuse chronic pain syndromes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with fibromyalgia are at increased risk to experience increased and prolonged postoperative pain. In this review, we will provide an overview of pathophysiological characteristics of fibromyalgia relevant for enhanced pain processing after surgery. Furthermore, we will present some potential treatment options in the perioperative period based on specific symptoms of individual fibromyalgia patients to optimize their pain management after surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent evidence points towards enhanced central nervous system sensitization and decreased descending i

"God Will Ease My Pain": Pain Self-Management Experiences of African American Adults.

Black/African Americans' experiences with pain self-management are often perceived as suboptimal and stressful because of cultural incongruence and racism encountered in interactions with the healthcare system. Although the number of qualitative and quantitative studies exploring Black/African American pain management experiences is slowly increasing, there has not been a systematic synthesis on this topic. Hence, the overarching aim of this review of the literature was to use a qualitative meta-ethnographic approach to synthesize knowledge on pain self-management and pain experiences among Bl

The Perioperative Pain Management Bundle is Feasible: Findings From the PAIN OUT Registry.

OBJECTIVES: The quality of postoperative pain management is often poor. A "bundle," a small set of evidence-based interventions, is associated with improved outcomes in different settings. We assessed whether staff caring for surgical patients could implement a "Perioperative Pain Management Bundle" and whether this would be associated with improved multidimensional pain-related patient-reported outcomes (PROs). METHODS: "PAIN OUT," a perioperative pain registry, offers tools for auditing pain-related PROs and obtaining information about perioperative pain management during the first 24 hours

Perioperative Pain Management for the Chronic Pain Patient With Long-Term Opioid Use.

In the United States nearly one in four patients presenting for surgery reports current opioid use. Many of these patients suffer from chronic pain disorders and opioid tolerance or dependence. Opioid tolerance and preexisting chronic pain disorders present unique challenges in regard to postoperative pain management. These patients benefit from providers who are not only familiar with multimodal pain management and skilled in the assessment of acute pain, but also empathetic to their specific struggles. Chronic pain patients often face stigmas surrounding their opioid use, and this may lead t

Pain management of hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke in patients from Nanjing, China.

We selected 106 hemiplegic patients with shoulder pain hospitalized after stroke from three hospitals in Nanjing, China between February 2007 and January 2012. All patients had complete clinical data sets and accounted for 45.5% of the inpatients because of stroke. Results showed that the number of patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke increased yearly, attacking mainly males 50-69 years of age. Of 106 patients, there were 60 cases (56.6%) of adhesive capsulitis, 19 (17.9%) of shoulder subluxation, 14 (13.2%) of complex regional pain syndrome, and 13 (12.6%) of central pain. The m

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome: management of the pain disorder: a urogynecology perspective.

Our understanding of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/BPS) has evolved with the advancements in our understanding of visceral pain syndromes. The concept of IC/BPS as a visceral pain disorder is used as a model to base a targeted approach to the management of patients with IC/BPS. Guidelines for the treatment of both the bladder and nonbladder pain disorders are reviewed.

In people with nociplastic dominant chronic pain is multi-disciplinary pain management plus motivational interviewing more effective than multi-disciplinary pain management alone for improving pain self-efficacy and pain interference: A randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is the leading cause of disability and disease burden globally. Emerging evidence suggests that people with nociplastic dominant chronic pain commonly have heightened pain sensitivity, high levels of pain interference and low self-efficacy. There is low certainty evidence supporting the effectiveness of motivational interviewing in a range of health conditions including chronic pain. However, the impact of motivational interviewing as an adjunct to evidence-based multi-disciplinary pain management has not been adequately evaluated. The aim of this paper is to describe

Acute Pain Management in the Intensive Care Unit.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes current approaches to pain assessment and pharmacologic therapy in the intensive care unit (ICU) and evaluates the expanding role of regional anesthesia (RA). RECENT FINDINGS: Contemporary ICU analgesia emphasizes systematic pain assessment and multimodal therapy while avoiding unnecessary deep sedation. RA provides targeted, opioid-sparing analgesia for localized pain but is limited by coagulopathy, infection, altered anatomy, and practical considerations. Fascial-plane blocks may provide useful alternatives in selected patients. Thoracic epidural an
