Use of patient-reported global assessment measures in clinical trials of chronic pain treatments: ACTTION systematic review and considerations.

Establishing clinically meaningful changes in pain experiences remains important for clinical trials of chronic pain treatments. Regulatory guidance and pain measurement initiatives have recommended including patient-reported global assessment measures (eg, Patient-Global Impression of Change [PGIC]) to aid interpretation of within-patient differences in domain-specific clinical trial outcomes (eg, pain intensity). The objectives of this systematic review were to determine the frequency of global assessment measures inclusion, types of measures, domains assessed, number and types of response o…

H-Wave® Device Stimulation for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is a problem globally, creating a tremendous economic burden. Since conventional treatments often fail, various forms of electrical stimulation have been proposed to improve function and decrease pain. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have not been adequately reported in the electrical stimulation literature. METHODS: A retrospective independent statistical analysis was conducted on PROMs data for users of H-Wave® device stimulation (HWDS) collected by the device manufacturer over a period of 4 years. Final surveys for 34,192 pain management

New parameters measured via preoperative tonsil photos to evaluate the post-tonsillectomy pain: an analysis assisted by machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain is the most common complication after tonsillectomy. We aimed to explore new parameters related to post-tonsillectomy pain, as well as to construct and validate a model for the preoperative evaluation of patients' risk for postoperative pain. METHODS: Data collected from patients who underwent tonsillectomy by the same surgeon at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital from January 2019 to May 2022 were analyzed. Preoperative tonsil images from all patients were taken, and the ratios of the distance between the upper pole of the tonsil and the base of the uvula (L1 for the le

A Brief Measure Assessing Adolescents' Daily In-Hospital Function Predicts Pain and Health Outcomes at Home After Major Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Pain-related function is not routinely assessed in the hospital. This prospective cohort study examined whether patients' daily pain-related function during hospitalization, based on the validated Youth Acute Pain Functional Ability Questionnaire (YAPFAQ), is associated with pain and quality of life. DESIGN: The YAPFAQ is a 12-item measure assessing functional parameters of recovery related to pain and has been validated in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease and after surgery. Adolescents undergoing major musculoskeletal surgery (n = 93) completed the YAPFAQ daily fo

Pain Catastrophizing Scale Associated With Other Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Plantar Fasciitis and Chronic Ankle Instability Patients.

BACKGROUND: The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) is a measure of how patients emotionally respond to pain. It is composed of 3 subscales-rumination, magnification, and helplessness-which address intrusive thoughts of pain, expectations of negative outcomes, and inability to cope with pain. Our purpose is to compare baseline PCS scores with other baseline patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in patients with plantar fasciitis (PF) or chronic ankle instability (CAI). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 201 patients who reported at least 1 pretreatment PCS subscore and were diagnosed with

The Area Deprivation Index Corresponds Effectively With Other Measures of Objective Socioeconomic Status in Adults With Chronic Low Back Pain.

Background and Purpose: How the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) performs compared to other measures of socioeconomic status (SES) is unknown. The study purpose is to compare the ADI and other measures of SES in their ability to predict pain severity/interference. Methods: Four measures of SES were compared-ADI, income, education, and subjective social status (SSS). Results: Pain severity/interference correlated positively with ADI (r = .396/r = .33), and negatively with income (r = -.507/r = -.428) and education (r = -.271/r = -.102). Criterion scores of the pain severity model suggest income per

Validity of a single-item measure to assess leg or back pain as the predominant symptom in patients with degenerative disorders of the lumbar spine.

PURPOSE: Recent studies suggest that the location of predominant pain (back or leg) can be a significant predictor of the outcome of surgery for degenerative spinal disorders. However, others challenge the notion that the predominant symptom can be reliably identified. This study examined the validity of a single item used to determine the most troublesome symptom. METHODS: A total of 2,778 patients with degenerative disorders of the lumbar spine scheduled for surgery with the goal of pain relief completed a questionnaire enquiring as to their most troublesome symptom ["main symptom"; back pa

Development and validation of the Child Activity Limitations Interview: a measure of pain-related functional impairment in school-age children and adolescents.

Recurrent pain in childhood are common and frequently impact children's everyday functioning. However, there are currently limited tools available to measure the impact of recurrent pain on children's daily activities, in particular, that can be used to identify appropriate targets for intervention and measure response to such interventions. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a new measure, the Child Activity Limitations Interview (CALI), to improve the assessment of functional impairment due to recurrent pain in school-age children and adolescents, and to compare this measu

Electric shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) as a pain control measure in dermatomyositis with calcinosis cutis-old method, new discovery.

A 23-year-old Chinese man with dermatomyositis associated calcinosis cutis received electric shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) as an alternate to a conventional pharmacological regimen to reduce pain associated with the complications of subcutaneous calcinosis nodules. He became symptom and opioid free after two courses of ESWL. No significant adverse effect had been noted. ESWL may serve as a means of pain killing in patients suffering from debilitating pain caused by complicated calcinosis cutis.

Physical measures of physical functioning as prognostic factors in predicting outcomes for neck pain: Protocol for a prospective longitudinal cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal condition that contributes to significant global burden. Evidence on physical measures of functioning as prognostic factors for neck pain remains limited. The objective of this study is to investigate whether physical measures of physical functioning as prognostic factors predict outcomes for people with neck pain. METHODS: This protocol for a prospective longitudinal cohort study will recruit approximately 156 adults with neck pain of any duration. Physical measures of physical functioning including impairment, performance, and activity mea

Inter-rater Reliability of Physiological and Pressure Pain Threshold Measurements During the Assessment of the Requiescence Technique in Healthy Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Relaxation techniques are widely studied for their influence on autonomic nervous system activity and pain perception. The requiescence technique (RT) is a structured integrative relaxation technique incorporating breathing exercises, guided imagery, colour-based visualisation, gentle movements, and meditation. The present study focused on the reproducibility of physiological and pressure pain threshold measurements obtained during RT assessment rather than on establishing the validity or efficacy of RT itself. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the inter-rater reliability of

Outcome measures used in the conservative management of people with non-specific thoracic spine pain (NTSP): a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Non-specific thoracic spine pain (NTSP) is an under-recognised musculoskeletal condition associated with functional limitations, reduced quality of life and significant healthcare utilisation. Conservative management, including manual therapy, exercise and education, is widely used across physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic practice. However, outcome measures used in NTSP research remain heterogeneous and inconsistently defined, limiting evidence synthesis and hindering progress toward developing a core outcome set (COS). This scoping review aims to systematically map the
