Forty-seven children afflicted with acute leukemia were studied at the Tata Memorial Hospital Bombay to record the occurrence of oral manifestations prior to and during chemotherapy. Lymphadenopathy was the most frequent single finding suggestive of leukemia during head and neck examination. Gingival abnormalities, bleeding gums and oral mucosal pallor were the other findings on initial oral examination. Due to immunosuppression caused by the chemotherapy drugs oral mucosal ulcerations, uncontrolled herpes, candidiasis and pseudomoniasis were observed.

Early pathological abnormalities in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1)-related dementia have not been well documented. We report a homosexual man with fatigue and intermittent diarrhea in whom early HIV-1-related dementia was demonstrated during neurological screening in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. Within 4 months he died of massive epistaxis, and the brain revealed astrocytosis of white matter and mild pallor of myelin staining in the absence of inflammation, multinucleated giant cells, and brain atrophy.

Disseminated tuberculosis is an important differential diagnosis for fever of unknown origin (FUO) and it can present with hepatosplenomegaly and lymphadenopathy and may have meningitis and with hematological abnormalities including pancytopenia or a leukemoid reaction. We report the case of a 13-year old male who presented with fever, weight loss, pallor and massive splenomegaly with pancytopenia, in whom a bone marrow trephine biopsy showed caseating granulomata, who responded well to antituberculous treatment and has remained healthy on follow up after nine years.

A case of peripheral arterial tumor embolization in a cat is described. The cat presented with signs of aortic thromboembolism, including decreased peripheral pulse quality, pallor, and coolness of the distal limbs, as well as proprioceptive deficits. A fishing cat (Felis viverrina) died overnight, within 12 hr of peracute onset of depression, slight tremors, pallor, and icterus. Necropsy showed widespread hemorrhage and hematomata in the heart, stomach, and kidneys. The lungs were hyperemic and edematous. The liver was swollen and yellowish green. The spleen was very large and hyperemic. Histologic changes consisted of pneumonia, hepatic necrosis, and renal hemorrhage with glomerular fibrin clots. Chlamydia antigen was detected in liver and kidney using a direct immunofluorescence assay, and Chlamydia were cultured.

Mercury poisoning was diagnosed in four dairy heifers, three of which died. The clinical signs were variable and included salivation, excessive thirst, extreme depression and severe diarrhoea. Postmortem examinations revealed inflammation and ulceration of the alimentary tract, pulmonary and cardiac haemorrhages, pallor of the kidney cortices and perirenal oedema. The kidney mercury concentrations were in the range 58 to 91 micrograms/g wet tissue. It is believed that the animals were poisoned by the ingestion of soil contaminated with mercurous chloride.

In a review of 10 patients with superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia, all of whom were the children of diabetic mothers, 17 of 20 eyes had one or more of four characteristic findings in the optic disc: relative superior entrance of the central retinal artery, pallor of the superior disc, superior peripapillary halo, and thinning of the superior peripapillary nerve fiber layer. We believe that the presence of these four signs of superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia strongly suggests maternal diabetes.

In a double-blind, randomized study, 50 patients undergoing conization were treated with either lysine-vasopressin (LVP) or its longer-acting analogue Glypressin. Bleeding during the operation and side effects were studied. The hemostatic effect appeared better with LVP than with Glypressin. One postoperative bleeding occurred in the whole series, in a patient treated with Glypressin. The effect on the general circulation, especially with respect to pallor of the skin, was less prominent with Glypressin than with LVP (with the concentrations used in this study).
