The Mental Burden of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Retrospective Post-pandemic View From a Romanian Sample.

BACKGROUND: The enduring psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to affect individuals long after the immediate health concerns have subsided. This research aims to identify specific groups within the Romanian population who are at a higher risk of experiencing mental health challenges that can interfere with everyday life and may lead to more serious mental health disorders. METHODS: Conducted as a cross-sectional survey, this study assessed the severity of psychological distress using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) questionnaire in relation to COVID-1

The Parallel Pandemic: A Systematic Review on the Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on OCD among Children and Adolescents.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying social changes severely impacted mental health globally. Children and adolescents may have been vulnerable to adverse mental health outcomes, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), due to their underdeveloped resilience and coping skills stemming from their progressing physical and psychological development. Few studies have explored the parallels between the pandemic and OCD trends in this population. This systematic review aims to identify the impacts of COVID-19 on OCD among children and adolescents. Using the PRISMA guidelines, a systemat

Differential Immune Profiles in Two Pandemic Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 Virus Waves at Pandemic Epicenter.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Severe influenza A(H1N1)pdm2009 virus infection cases are characterized by sustained immune activation during influenza pandemics. Seasonal flu data suggest that immune mediators could be modified by wave-related changes. Our aim was to determine the behavior of soluble and cell-related mediators in two waves at the epicenter of the 2009 influenza pandemic. METHODS: Leukocyte surface activation markers were studied in serum from peripheral blood samples, collected from the 1(st) (April-May, 2009) and 2(nd) (October 2009-February 2010) pandemic waves. Patients with confirm…

Epidemiologic characterization of the 1918 influenza pandemic summer wave in Copenhagen: implications for pandemic control strategies.

BACKGROUND: The 1918-1919 A/H1N1 influenza pandemic killed approximately 50 million people worldwide. Historical records suggest that an early pandemic wave struck Europe during the summer of 1918. METHODS: We obtained surveillance data that were compiled weekly, during 1910-1919, in Copenhagen, Denmark; the records included medically treated influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), hospitalizations, and deaths by age. We used a Serfling seasonal regression model to quantify excess morbidity and mortality, and we estimated the reproductive number (R) for the summer, fall, and winter pandemic waves.

A retrospective study of intravenous pentamidine for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia prophylaxis in adult patients with hematologic malignancies-its utility during respiratory virus pandemics.

OBJECTIVES: In hematology, prophylaxis for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) is recommended for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and in selected categories of intensive chemotherapy for hematologic malignancies. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is the recommended first-line agent; however, its use is not straightforward. Inhaled pentamidine is the recommended second-line agent; however, aerosolized medications were discouraged during respiratory virus outbreaks, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, in view of potential contamination risks. Intravenous

ViralPrimer: a web server to monitor viral nucleic acid amplification tests' primer efficiency during pandemics, with emphasis on SARS-CoV-2 and Mpox.

SUMMARY: Accurate pathogen identification is crucial during outbreaks, especially with the emergence of new variants requiring frequent primer updates. However, resources for maintaining up-to-date verification of primer sequences are often limited, which poses challenges for reliable diagnosis and hinders potential monitoring efforts based on genome sequencing. To address this, we introduce ViralPrimer, a web server facilitating primer design, SARS-CoV-2 and Mpox variant monitoring, and adaptation to future threats. ViralPrimer aims to enhance diagnostic accuracy with its comprehensive primer

Long-term mortality rate changes and inverse patterns for pandemic and post-pandemic excess mortality.

The COVID-19 pandemic and pandemic response may have long-term consequences. The cumulative impact may be better appraised when post-pandemic years are also considered. For 38 populations with reliable death registration data, we estimated excess deaths for 2020-2025 with granular age stratification. One model (Fa) compared deaths against the mean of 2017-2019. Three other trend models considered changes in mortality rates after 2003 (or after a country reached $20,000 per capita income) factoring trend-of-trends (TTa), including shrinkage (STTa), and factoring also the 2024-2025 data for tren

Sexual expression and the COVID-19 pandemic: The future of sexual intimacy after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Humans, as social beings, rely on interaction in order to survive and "flourish". By nature, they are "weak" and when in solitary, their freedom is jeopardized. Connecting with others, intimacy, physical contact, and the sense of belonging are core needs, and once recognized as such, they ultimately serve one's freedom. In this context, social interaction serves as a fundamental factor for survival. The creation of bonds improves one's position in the evolutionary process, and paves the way towards the ultimate "goal" of existence. The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures to control its spread h
