A large-scale Fecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) was integrated with ITS-2 rDNA nemabiome metabarcoding to investigate anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites in western Canadian beef cattle. The study was designed to detect anthelmintic resistance with the low fecal egg counts that typically occur in cattle in northern temperate regions. Two hundred and thirty-four auction market-derived, fall-weaned steer calves coming off pasture were randomized into three groups in feedlot pens: an untreated control group, an injectable ivermectin treatment group, and an in

This paper deals with a new egg count technique for Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus and Ascaris suum. The making of the new counter and the operation are described. The eggs of M. hirudinaceus in the upper, the middle and the lower levels of the sediment from swine feces were counted by the new egg count technique and the numbers of the eggs in the sedimentary liquids diluted two, four, six, eight and ten times were nearly similar. This indicates that the eggs dispersed evenly in the sediment and that the new technique is reliable. Comparison between the new technique and the McMaster techniq

Relationships between hookworm, A. lumbricoides and anaemia were studied utilising egg count in faecal specimens and haemoglobin levels from a cross-sectional sample of 641 Nepalese children, 6 to 120 months of age. Additional analyses were performed to assess the level of risk by age and worm load. Kato thick-smear technique was used to perform faecal analyses, recording the number of hookworm eggs and A. lumbricoides eggs in each sample of 50 mg of faeces. Haemoglobin levels were assessed by the Sahli method. The presence of eggs for each parasite was significantly associated with lower leve

Strongyle nematodes are parasitic worms that significantly impact the health and productivity of livestock, including goats. Although infected goats are commonly treated with anthelmintics, reports of anthelmintic resistance have been increasing. This issue, along with limited treatment choices for goats and the lack of comprehensive anthelmintic resistance surveillance in Thailand, highlights the need to evaluate available drugs for effective parasite control. On a dairy goat farm in Chiang Mai, Thailand, a previous fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) revealed resistance of strongyle nemat

OBJECTIVE: To determine how gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection, reflected by fecal egg counts and Ostertagia ostertagi serum antibody titers, is associated with the antibody response to bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1 (BVDV-1) vaccine antigen in fall-weaned feedlot cattle from western Canada.
ANIMALS: Cross-sectional study with 240 steer calves derived from an auction market.
PROCEDURE: At feedlot arrival, calves were given a commercial vaccine containing modified live BVDV-1. Serum neutralization antibody titers against BVDV-1 antigens were determined in individual blood samples c

Schistosomiasis remains a significant public health concern, with Schistosoma japonicum infection endemic in certain regions of Asia. Praziquantel (PZQ), primarily known as an effective therapeutic agent, has recently shown potential as a prophylactic measure against delayed S. japonicum infections. This study investigated the preventive efficacy of PZQ pretreatment at varying cercarial infection intensities and determined the parasite developmental stages targeted by the pretreatment in a mouse model. Results demonstrated that PZQ pretreatment significantly reduced both worm burdens and liver

The results of quantitative stool examinations from a large number of rural Papua New Guineans permitted the establishment of age-prevalence and age-intensity profiles and frequency distributions of both Strongyloides cf. fuelleborni and hookworm. Strongyloides exhibited a unique age-prevalence profile which originated at about 40% in the youngest age group, rose to a maximum in those 4-5 years old, and then declined. The intensity of infection reached its peak in 12 month olds before declining. The frequency distribution of Strongyloides egg counts was markedly over-dispersed: k values were b

Eosinophilic leukocytosis can be attributed to a number of clinical conditions such as parasitic infection, allergies, and neoplasms. Parasitic infection is the main cause of eosinophilia; however, a marked leukocytosis with hypereosinophilia secondary to Trichuris trichiura in adults has not been previously reported. We describe a case of a 39-year-old man who presented with fever and diarrhea. The investigation revealed a white blood cell (WBC) count of 20.69 × 109/L with an absolute eosinophil count of 12.44 × 109/L. Fecal microscopic examination demonstrated T. trichuria eggs. The WBC coun

A highly significant familial aggregation of eosinophil levels (X2(3) = 38.00) was detected in a sample from three Brazilian populations with a high incidence of helminthic parasitism. The data were unable to resolve genetic or common environment causation due to the lack of environmental concomitant variables. Results of path analysis indicate that the familial cause accounts for about 58% of the total variability of eosinophil levels among parasite-infected individuals.

Animal experiments have shown that chronic Opisthorchis invasion results in accelerated continuous blood coagulation, by inducing hypercoagulation and platelet activation. The state of hemostasis depends on the degree of infection and undergoes the largest changes during maximum invasion. Irrespective of invasion rates, chronic opisthorchiasis is accompanied by hypofibrinogenemia.

The objective of this study was to determine and compare the viability of Fasciola hepatica eggs collected from fecal and gallbladder samples through the egg hatching test of experimentally infected sheep. The biological samples used come from a previously reported sheep vaccination trial. Twenty-five sheep free of fasciolosis and housed in pens with cement floors were used. The sheep were grouped into five groups (G1-5, n = 5 sheep per group). Groups G1(100 ug), G2 (200 ug), G3 (400 ug) were immunized with the chimeric protein (rFhLAP-CL1) and, groups G4 and G5 were the adjuvant and infection

Dioctophyme renale is a zoonotic nematode that parasitizes mainly right kidney of domestic and wild canines, and can affect humans, and its eggs are eliminated in urine. The duration of egg dissemination after surgical treatment is unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify, quantify, and verify the duration of the elimination of D. renale eggs in dog urine after the surgical removal of nematodes. The study involved 15 dogs in which female specimens of D. renale were detected in kidneys. Urine samples, preferably first-morning urine samples, were collected before and for t

To contribute of the knowledge of the immune mechanisms underlying the response to the immunization of goats with thiol-binding proteins fractions (PBS-TSBP) from Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) adult worms, this study analyzed the degree of protection and the immune responses developed against the parasite after vaccination with this antigenic complex during the time-elapsing between challenge with L3 of the parasite and the development of adult worms, evidenced by the appearance of first faecal eggs (prepatent period or prepatency). Goat kids immunized with PBS-TBSP generated an immune r

Intestinal helminth management in horses has both clinical and epidemiologic relevance, in additional association with anthelmintic resistance. The Swiss Army employs military owned riding horses and privately owned pack horses, which are brought together for service periods up to 12 weeks. We compared husbandry conditions and intestinal helminth management of both groups via questionnaire and analysed faecal samples of 53 riding horses and 130 pack horses using combined sedimentation/flotation, the McMaster method and larval cultures. Riding horses only had cyathostomin infections (prevalence

Cyathostomins are the most common and highly prevalent parasites of horses worldwide. Historically, the control of cyathostomins has mainly relied on the routine use of anthelmintic products. Increasing reports on anthelmintic resistance (AR) in cyathostomins are concerning. A potential method proposed for detecting emerging AR in cyathostomins has been estimating the egg reappearance period (ERP). This paper reviews the data available for the ERP of cyathostomins against the three major classes of anthelmintics, macrocyclic lactones, tetrahydropyrimidines, and benzimidazoles. Published peer-r

We estimated the losses caused by gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections in young Nellore cattle born in three consecutive calving seasons (Cycles I, II and III). Three groups of animals: Group 1 - free from GIN using 2.5 mg/kg of albendazole sulfoxide; Group II - free from Oesophagosomum radiatum using 0.2 mg/kg of ivermectin but infected with ivermectin-resistant Haemonchus placei and Cooperia spp.; and Group III - non-treated experimental control animals, infected with all GIN, were observed over a period of 12 months. Male and female calves were evaluated starting before weaning when t

There are limited data on the efficacy of antiparasitic treatments and husbandry methods to control nematode infections in captive populations of African green monkeys (AGMs), Chlorocebus sabaeus. In faecal egg count (FEC) tests, 10 of the 11 (91%) adult male AGMs captured from the large feral population on the island of St Kitts had evidence of nematode infections, mostly Capillaria (8/11, 73%), Trichuris trichiura (7/11, 64%) and strongylid species (7/11, 64%) specifically (hookworm and Trichostrongylus, 50/50), but also Strongyloides fuelleborni (1/11, 9%). The aim of the present study was to assess the resistance status of bovine gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) against ivermectin (IVM) and fenbendazole (FBZ) in Ecuador. The study involved five cattle farms located in different topographic zones of the country. Anthelmintic efficacy was assessed by calculating the percentage of fecal egg counts reduction (FECR) after treatment. Additionally, DNA from pooled larval cultures was screened to ascertain benzimidazole resistance alleles. For animals treated with IVM, FECR percentages ranged from 0 to 68%, indicating the presence of highly resistant w

Nematode eggs are pervasive pathogens that infect billions of people and livestock every year. Adult parasitic nematode worms can be distinguished based on their size and morphology. However, their eggs, particularly their species Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum cannot be identified from each other. Identifying eggs of helminths from wastewater and sludge is important from a public health perspective to minimize the spread of Ascaris infections. Numerous methods exist for nematode identification, from a morphological-based approach to high throughput sequencing technology. However, these
