Parasites of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. XXXIX. Helminth and arthropod parasites of Angora goats in the southern Karoo.

Parasites were collected from 160 Angora goats and kids on the Jansenville Experimental Farm, Eastern Cape Province. Six nematodes were identified to species level and three to generic level. Nematodirus spathiger was the most numerous of the economically important nematodes recovered. It was always present, and fourth stage larvae were collected from untreated goats from August to March, while animals used as tracers also picked up most infection from August to March. Kids born on the farm during October acquired their first nematode infections between 2 and 3 months of age and the intensity …

Parasite findings in the MacQueen's bustard, Chlamydotis macqueenii (Grey, 1832), and considerations on the parasite fauna of bustards and the systematic position of some of the parasites.

Samples from 1,254 MacQueen's bustards (Chlamydotis macqueenii) were sent for parasitological examination to the department of parasitology of the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory between 2003 and 2022. The birds originated from sanctuaries where confiscated birds were kept but also from from zoos and private collections or were bred in captivity and released to conservation areas where they got injured or died for various reasons. The material consisted of mainly of intestines and faecal samples as well as heads, stomachs, muscles samples and cysts, isolated helminths, ecto-parasites an…

Blastocystis, an Enigmatic Parasite.

Blastocystis spp. is the most prevalent human enteric protist, yet its clinical significance remains controversial. Currently recognized as a genetically diverse stramenopile with zoonotic potential, it comprises at least 42 subtypes, of which ST1-ST4 account for most human infections. Despite more than a century of research, its pathogenic role and ecological interactions are still debated. We performed a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global scientific production on Blastocystis spp. from 1917 to 2025 using the Scopus database, retrieving 3710 publications. Temporal trends, geographi

Parasite microtubule arrays.

Microtubules are a key component of eukaryotic cell architecture. Regulation of the dynamic growth and shrinkage of microtubules gives cells their shape, allows cells to swim, and drives the separation of chromosomes. Parasites have developed intriguingly divergent biology, seemingly expanding upon and reinventing microtubule use in fascinating ways. These organisms affect life on the planet at scales that are often overlooked: there are likely more parasitic than free-living organisms on Earth, and they have a sizeable influence across ecosystems. As parasites can cause devastating diseases, …

Parasite-bacteria interrelationship.

Parasites and bacteria have co-evolved with humankind, and they interact all the time in a myriad of ways. For example, some bacterial infections result from parasite-dwelling bacteria as in the case of Salmonella infection during schistosomiasis. Other bacteria synergize with parasites in the evolution of human disease as in the case of the interplay between Wolbachia endosymbiont bacteria and filarial nematodes as well as the interaction between Gram-negative bacteria and Schistosoma haematobium in the pathogenesis of urinary bladder cancer. Moreover, secondary bacterial infections may compl…

Malaria parasite clearance.

Following anti-malarial drug treatment asexual malaria parasite killing and clearance appear to be first order processes. Damaged malaria parasites in circulating erythrocytes are removed from the circulation mainly by the spleen. Splenic clearance functions increase markedly in acute malaria. Either the entire infected erythrocytes are removed because of their reduced deformability or increased antibody binding or, for the artemisinins which act on young ring stage parasites, splenic pitting of drug-damaged parasites is an important mechanism of clearance. The once-infected erythrocytes retur…

[Emerging parasitic diseases].

Travels, migration and circulation of goods facilitate the emergence of new infectious diseases often unrecognized outside endemic areas. Most of emerging infections are of viral origin. Muscular Sarcocystis infection, an acute illness acquired during short trips to Malaysia, and Chagas disease, a chronic illness with long incubation period found among Latin American migrants, are two very different examples of emerging parasitic diseases. The former requires a preventive approach for travelers going to Malaysia and must be brought forth when they return with fever, myalgia and eosinophilia, w

Parasitic diseases of the pleura.

Parasitic infections are prevalent in certain parts of the world and may cause pleural involvement, which often goes unrecognized. Common parasites involving the pleura include Entamoeba histolytica, Echinococcus granulosus and Paragonimus westermani. Amebiasis can cause empyema with "anchovy sauce" pus, reactive pleural effusions and bronchopleural fistula with hydropneumothorax. Echinococcosis may result in pleural thickening, pneumothorax, secondary pleural hydatidosis and pleural effusions. Paragonimiasis may cause chylous and cholesterol pleural effusions, pleural thickening and pneumotho…

[Parasitic factor and cancer].

There is opinion in the literature as to that liver trematode infections, such as opisthorchiasis, clonorchiasis, fascioliasis, and metorchiasis, can induce cancer of the liver pancreas, intestine - this all is clinically observed. The authors were the first in world practice to show the development of a hepatic blastomatous process in animals (albino rats, cats) with opisthorchiasis in 13%; cancer developed in 28 and 56% with the use of a hepatotropic carcinogen and combined (opisthorchiasis + a carcinogen) exposure, respectively. Throughout his life, a human being can easily catch these trem

Intestinal parasitic infection.

In general, gastrointestinal tract is the primary involvement site of parasites during their life cycle. In this article, we will describe amebiasis, ascariasis, and anisakiasis among the many common intestinal parasitic diseases. We will review the epidemiology, life cycles, clinical manifestations and complications, and illustrate detailed imaging findings of intestinal parasites. Recognizing features of parasitic infection is important to establish an early diagnosis that leads to prompt treatment and helps avoid unnecessary surgery.

Diphyllobothrium: Neolithic parasite?

During paleoparasitological analyses on several Neolithic sites in Switzerland (Arbon-Bleiche 3) and southwestern Germany (Hornstaad-Hörnle I, Torwiesen II, and Seekirch-Stockwiesen), numerous eggs of Diphyllobothrium sp. were recovered. This is one of the earliest occurrences of this parasite during the prehistoric period in the Old World. The prevalence of this helminth in the samples studied raises the question as to how important parasitic diseases were during the Neolithic period and what their actual consequences were.

Parasitic diseases of the heart.

The following chapter is one of a series of chapters in the volume entitled Infections of the Myocardium appearing in Frontiers in Bioscience. The full table of contents can be found at http://www.bioscience.org/current/special/tanowitz.htm. In this chapter, we review several parasitic infections involving the myocardium and pericardium. The most widely studied parasitic infection affecting the heart is Chagas' disease or American trypanosomiasis. In this chapter we describe issues relating to Chagas' disease not covered in detail in other chapters. African trypanosomiasis may also cause a myo

Thoracolumbar rachipagus parasite.

A rare example of rachipagus conjoint parasitic twinning in a newborn girl is described. A lipomatous mass with an attached hind limb (with fused feet) and a rudimentary vertebral arch were found adherent to the dorsal vertebral arches of the autosite in the thoracolumbar region. There was a clear cleavage plane between the autosite and the parasite. Microscopic sections of the excised specimen showed gut only. The autosite had no other congenital anomalies except for spina bifida in the thoracolumbar region with unfolding of the underlying cord. In the absence of underlying life-threatening a

Neurocysticercosis: migration of a parasite.

Neurocysticercosis is the most common parasitic infection of the central nervous system (CNS). Infection occurs following oral ingestion of eggs of the porcine tapeworm, Taenia solium. Eggs migrate to distal tissue sites via the bloodstream, and develop into larval cysts. When cyst growth disrupts normal function of the CNS, patients most commonly present with new onset seizures or hydrocephalus. Neuroimaging with computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to diagnose neurocysticercosis. Treatment regimens are based on cyst location and developmental stage, and
