Heart rate variability in obsessive compulsive disorder in comparison to healthy controls and as predictor of treatment response.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has a large impact on the quality of life of patients. It often takes years to get the right diagnosis and to receive treatment. Therefore, biomarkers that could inform the diagnostic process and provide information on response or non-response for first line treatment approaches are urgently needed. The aim of this study was to analyze whether (1) heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) markers of the autonomous nervous system could distinguish between healthy controls (HC) and patients suffering from OCD and (2) HRV parameters additional

Production of Lactobacillus brevis ProGA28 attenuates stress-related sleep disturbance and modulates the autonomic nervous system and the motor response in anxiety/depression behavioral tests in Wistar-Kyoto rats.

AIMS: Many studies have reported that the production of Lactobacillus brevis is beneficial for sleep, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Other known beneficial effects of Lactobacillus brevis include improvement of anxious or depressive symptoms and better modulation of the autonomic nervous system, both of which impact sleep. In this study, we investigated whether the sleep benefit of Lactobacillus brevis was associated with the modulating effects on the autonomic nervous system and anxious/depressive symptoms. MAIN METHODS: Wistar-Kyoto rats were fed the production of Lactobacill

Directional effects of whole-body spinning and visual flow in virtual reality on vagal neuromodulation.

BACKGROUND: Neural circuits allow whole-body yaw rotation to modulate vagal parasympathetic activity, which alters beat-to-beat variation in heart rate. The overall output of spinning direction, as well as vestibular-visual interactions on vagal activity still needs to be investigated. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated direction-dependent effects of visual and natural vestibular stimulation on two autonomic responses: heart rate variability (HRV) and pupil diameter. METHODS: Healthy human male subjects (n = 27) underwent constant whole-body yaw rotation with eyes open and closed in the cloc

Continuous positive airway pressure therapy lowers vagal tone in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep apnoea, which constitutes a major social problem because of its high prevalence and its emerging association with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, is known to affect autonomic nervous system activity. We assessed the hypothesis that treatment of sleep apnoea patients with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) alters the indices of heart rate variability (HRV) that reflect sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system activity. METHODS: We studied 26 patients (18 men, aged 49.2 +/- 7.6 years) with obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome. In all pa

Parasympathetic regulation of heart rate in rats after 5/6 nephrectomy is impaired despite functionally intact cardiac vagal innervation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic renal failure is frequently associated with a high risk of sudden cardiac death due to dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. The pathogenic mechanisms underlying the parasympathetic cardiac dysautonomia are not fully elucidated yet. METHODS: Chronic renal failure was induced in rats by 5/6 nephrectomy. Blood pressure, resting heart rate and plasma levels of creatinine, urea and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) were measured. To characterize the parasympathetic innervation of the heart, chronotropic responses to atropine, metipranolol and to vagal stimulation in th

Orthostatic hypotension following acute intracerebral haemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Blood pressure regulation may be impaired following acute stroke. Typically, there is overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and underactivity of the parasympathetic system resulting in transient hypertension. Orthostatic hypotensive responses in acute stroke are less well documented. CASE REPORT: We present a case of severe persistent orthostatic hypotension (OH) following acute intracerebral haemorrhage in a previously fit and well man. Symptomatic OH persisted for 60 days post-stroke. No known causes of OH could be identified. CONCLUSIONS: Such profound and persistent

Dysfunction of the cardiac parasympathetic system in fatal familial insomnia: a heart rate variability study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Although sympathetic hyperactivity with preserved parasympathetic activity has been extensively recognized in fatal familial insomnia (FFI), the symptoms of parasympathetic nervous system failure observed in some patients are difficult to explain. Using heart rate variability (HRV), this study aimed to discover evidence of parasympathetic dysfunction in patients with FFI and the difference of parasympathetic activity between patients with FFI and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). METHODS: This study enrolled nine patients with FFI, eight patients with CJD and 18 healthy contr…

Features of autonomic cardiovascular control during cognition in major depressive disorder.

Previous research has suggested reduced parasympathetic cardiac regulation during cognitive activity in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, little is known about possible abnormalities in sympathetic control and cardiovascular reactivity. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of autonomic cardiovascular control in the context of executive functions in MDD. Thirty six MDD patients and 39 healthy controls participated. Parameters of sympathetic (pre-ejection period, PEP) and parasympathetic control (high and low frequency heart rate variability, HF HRV, LF HRV; and barorefle

Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children Is Not Associated With Abnormal Autonomic Nervous System Function: Hypothesis and Theory.

The quest to understand the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has led to extensive literature that purports to provide evidence for autonomic dysfunction based on heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV), in particular respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a measure of parasympathetic functioning. Many studies conclude that autism is associated with vagal withdrawal and sympathetic hyperactivation based on HRV and electrodermal analyses. We will argue that a critical analysis of the data leads to the hypothesis that autonomic nervous system dysfunction is not a dominant featur

Role of the parasympathetic cholinergic system in normal and obstructed airways.

The cholinergic motor component of the parasympathetic nervous system supplies several structures which may be important in determining the resistance of normal and diseased airways. Lower airway smooth muscle. Here the nervous control is predominantly cholinergic and vagal, as shown by nerve and field stimulation experiments, and by inhibition of contraction by atropine. The cholinergic motor system can be driven reflexly, and most bronchoconstrictor reflexes have been established as vagal and cholinergic. The importance of other innervations, adrenergic and non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic, h…

Parasympathetic regulation and support from family and friends predict prosocial development in U.S. Mexican-origin adolescents.

Both parasympathetic nervous system regulation and receipt of social support from close relationships contribute to prosocial development, although few studies have examined their combined influences in adolescence and particularly within racially and ethnically minoritized populations. In this longitudinal study of 229 U.S. Mexican-origin adolescents (48% female-identifying), youths reported on receipt of social support from family and friends from 10 to 16 years, had their baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) measured at 17 years, reported their prosocial behavior and completed the Mi…

[18F]FEOBV positron emission tomography may not be a suitable method to measure parasympathetic denervation in patients with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The peripheral autonomic nervous system may be involved years before onset of motor symptoms in some patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Specific imaging techniques to quantify the cholinergic nervous system in peripheral organs are an unmet need. We tested the hypothesis that patients with PD display decreased [18F]FEOBV uptake in peripheral organs - a sign of parasympathetic denervation. METHODS: We included 15 PD patients and 15 age- and sex matched healthy controls for a 70 min whole-body dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) acquisition. Compartmental modelling was

[Effects of a beta 2-agonist, sodium cromoglycate, and an anticholinergic agent on hyperventilation-induced bronchoconstriction in sensitized rabbits].

Hyperventilation can induce bronchoconstriction in ovalbumin-sensitized rabbits. To investigate the roles of the beta-receptor parasympathetic nervous system and of chemical mediators in hyperventilation-induced bronchoconstriction (HIB), the effects of a beta 2-agonist, of sodium cromoglycate, and of an anticholinergic agent on HIB were studied. Rabbits were divided to four groups and treated as follows. Group 1: Control (n = 7, 0.9% saline); Group 2: Procaterol (n = 4, 50 micrograms/l); Group 3: Sodium cromoglycate (n = 4, 10 mg/ml); and Group 4: Ipratropium bromide (n = 6, 1 mg/ml). Each dr…

Vagus nerve through α7 nAChR modulates lung infection and inflammation: models, cells, and signals.

Cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) bridges immune and nervous systems and plays pleiotropic roles in modulating inflammation in animal models by targeting different immune, proinflammatory, epithelial, endothelial, stem, and progenitor cells and signaling pathways. Acute lung injury (ALI) is a devastating inflammatory disease. It is pathogenically heterogeneous and involves many cells and signaling pathways. Here, we emphasized the research regarding the modulatory effects of CAP on animal models, cell population, and signaling pathways that involved in the pathogenesis of ALI. By com

[Electrophysiological Mechanism Underlying Vagal Nerve Activity in Mice].

The autonomic nervous system, which consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, plays an important role in the regulation of various functions of body organs. Recent studies have reported that vagal afferents that transmit information from the periphery to the brain function as an important signal pathway for dissemination of details regarding nutritional status, as well as the cardiovascular system and inflammation. In this review, we describe the measurement analysis of vagal nerve activity in mice using an in vivo electrophysiological method and account for the role and mechanism of

Role of autonomic nervous system for development and suppression of motion sickness in Suncus murinus.

To clarify the role of autonomic nervous function in motion sickness, the effect of agents that act on the autonomic nervous system on the motion stimuli-induced emesis was studied in two strains of Suncus murinus (Jic:SUN-Her and Jic:SUN-Ler) with congenitally different sensitivity to veratrine sulfate. We demonstrated significant differences between the two strains in sensitivity to motion stimuli. Isoproterenol (2.5 mg kg(-1), s.c.) significantly prolonged the latency to the first emetic episode induced by motion stimuli and significantly decreased the number of emetic episodes in Jic:SUN-H
