Three men presented to a single regional secure psychiatric unit over a twelve-month period, after taking their youngest child hostage in their own homes because of a threatened separation from the family. In each case the episode had escalated because of hostility to police involvement in what for them was a typical domestic upheaval. All cases ended without injury. In each man, substance abuse, a family history of domestic violence and fears of rejection were prominent, and the recent birth of a child may have been an added precipitant. There may be a common family structure which predispose

This is a study of parental influence in a group of Chinese male and female transsexuals compared with a group of male and female heterosexual controls. There was no difference in the parental ages of the transsexuals and controls at time of their birth. The fathers of the male transsexuals and the mothers of female transsexuals were less involved in their upbringing. Using a bonding instrument, the fathers of male transsexuals were found to be less caring, and mothers of female transsexuals were less overprotective than the fathers and mothers of the controls. Studies on parental involvement

Children's reactions to parental quarrels were investigated in a general population sample of children between 9 and 12 years old. One hundred and thirty-nine families participated in the study. Approximately half the children were living in disharmonious families and half were in harmonious families. Mothers and children were interviewed with semistructured interviews to determine how children responded to specific episodes of parental quarrelling. Seventy-one percent of children reported intervening in parental quarrels. A range of other coping strategies was identified: seeking contact with

The prevalence of parental bereavement was determined in 50 married female outpatients with a DSM-III diagnosis of agoraphobia and in a control group of married female outpatients diagnosed as having non-psychotic psychiatric disorders other than agoraphobia. The two groups were matched for age and overall severity of psychiatric symptoms. Compared with the general population, the patient control group reported a statistically significant excess of parental, but not maternal, bereavement. The agoraphobic group was significantly younger than the control group at the time of parental loss. These

The parental representations of 30 male-to-female transsexuals were rated using a measure of fundamental parental dimensions and shown to be of acceptable validity as a measure both of perceived and actual parental characteristics. Scores on that measure were compared separately against scores returned by matched male and female controls. The transsexuals did not differ from the male controls in their scoring of their mothers but did score their fathers as less caring and more overprotective. These differences were weaker for the comparisons made against the female controls. Item analyses sugg

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of overweight (15%) and obesity (6%) in children under 5 years of age in Canada are high, and young children with overweight and obesity are at increased risk of the development of chronic disease(s) in adulthood. Prior research has demonstrated very few published trials on effective obesity prevention interventions in young children at risk of obesity, within primary healthcare settings. The aim of this study is to determine if 18-48-month-old children at risk for obesity, who are randomized to receive the Parents Together program (i.e., intervention group), have re

INTRODUCTION: Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face immense pressure and challenges. In traditional Chinese culture, a distinct division of labor exists, with mothers typically bearing greater parenting burdens. This study examined the relationship between parental psychological flexibility (PPF) and parental involvement in families of children with ASD, investigated the mediating role of anxiety, and explored the interaction effects between parents.
METHODS: The study included 83 pairs of parents of children with ASD. Parental psychological flexibility, anxiety, and pa…

OBJECTIVE: Parenting Management Training (PMT) has long been a widely adopted intervention. In recent years, Mindful Parenting (MP) programs have attracted considerable attention and emerged as promising alternatives in parenting interventions. This study evaluated the effectiveness of MP and PMT as preventive interventions.
METHOD: In a randomized controlled trial, 189 parents (Mean age = 41.1; 177 mothers and 12 fathers) of primary school children were randomly assigned to MP, PMT, or a waitlist-control group. They were recruited from the general population through schools and online platfo…

Sexuality education communication between parents and teenagers plays a significant role in delaying sexual debut for teenagers, helping in the prevention of teenage pregnancy and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. Studies report that sexuality education communication between teenagers and parents is minimal, uncoordinated, and ineffective. This exposes teenagers to negative sexual behaviours, which could lead to HIV and unplanned teenage pregnancy. The purpose of the study was to explore the views and perceptions of teenagers in the rural KwaZulu-Natal on barriers to sexuality

Parent-child interactions foster children's neurocognitive development through multiple pathways. A key pathway involves parental scaffolding, in which parents use speech, gesture, or their combination multimodally to guide children's problem solving and learning. However, the neural processes underlying different scaffolding modalities remain largely unknown. In the present study, we examined the neural basis for the role of parental scaffolding during a parent-child cooperative spatial problem-solving task. We characterized three different types of scaffolds parents used, specifically speech

This study examined discrepancies between child and parent reports of pediatric anxiety, depression, and anger, as well as how parental anxiety differentially influenced these reports across clinical manifestations. Participants were recruited from clinical centers in Brazil specializing in anxiety disorders, comprising 47 children aged 7 to 17 years and their parents. Parent-child agreement was moderate to high for anxiety and depression symptoms but nonsignificant for anger. Parental anxiety was significantly associated with child anxiety and depression in parent-reported measures, while chi

Parents of children with disabilities face a high risk of parental burnout due to caregiving demands. This study examined whether mentalization and self-compassion protect against burnout. Conducted in Iran during the 2020-2021 academic year, it involved 911 parents (Mage = 40.02 ± 7.14). Participants completed the Parental Burnout Inventory, Reflective Functioning Questionnaire, and Self-Compassion Scale. Data were analyzed using frequency assessment, X2 tests, one-way analysis of variance, and Generalized Additive Models with SPSS-22 and R 4.0.3. Results showed 1.6% experienced severe burnou

Emotion regulation (ER) in parenting is crucial for parental well-being and children's mental health. However, ER in parenting is often studied as a general construct, overlooking the unique challenges of caregiving, particularly for sexual and gender minority (SGM) parents. This study examines the psychometric properties of the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale (REPS) in parents across SGM status. Specifically, we leverage cross-sectional survey data from two national samples of ethno-racially diverse parents (n = 1,958, 32.3% sexual minority, 11.2% gender minority) to evaluate measureme…

BACKGROUND: Parenting programs can be effective for preventing child maltreatment, though effects are often modest, and motivating parents reported for abuse to participate in programs remains a challenge. Understanding parents' experiences can provide valuable insights into fostering parental motivation and improving programs.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of parents' experiences of participating in Safer Kids, a parenting program routinely delivered in Sweden to parents reported for child abuse.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Fifteen parents from a randomized contro…

BACKGROUND: Within two-parent households, the extent to which parents are satisfied in their couple relationship is theorized to influence the parent-child relationship. Parents in a satisfying couple relationship are thought to be better able to jointly manage and cope with everyday child-related problems and stressors than parents dissatisfied with their couple relationship.
METHOD: The current study conducted a within-couple cross-sectional examination of the associations between couple relationship satisfaction (actor and partner), parent-child relationship quality, and dyadic coping. Dat

AIM: The young developing brain is very sensitive to many environmental influences, both positive and negative. Parental stress and parent-infant bonding have been shown to be associated with neurodevelopmental delays in toddlers. However, it is not known at what age these associations become relevant which we aim to study as early as three-months of age, paving the way for new intervention strategies.
METHODS: This study included 339 parent-infant dyads or triads from the Dutch TRAILS-NEXT cohort. Parental stress and parent-infant bonding were assessed at three months of age using the 'Nijme

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the Step-by-Step Parenting Program (SBSPP) to prepare expectant parents with intellectual disabilities to care for their newborns.
METHOD: Two expectant parents with intellectual disabilities were seen once or twice weekly in their homes for about 2 h over 16 and 20 weeks (21 and 27 sessions), respectively. The key measure was percentage correct scores on parenting skill checklists with an infant simulator (IS) and eventually the newborn. Newborn-care skills trained were sponge bath, dressing, ear and nose care, and treating cradle cap. SBSPP-IS training consi…
