Fetal hydrops in the first trimester associated with maternal parvovirus infection.

We present a case of fetal hydrops associated with maternal parvovirus infection during the first trimester of pregnancy that sonographically mimicked findings associated with fetal aneuploidy. The transabdominal sonograms of this fetus at 12.9 weeks' gestational age were consistent with increased nuchal translucency thickness. Transvaginal sonographic evaluation of the fetus showed generalized subcutaneous sonolucency suggestive of early fetal hydrops. An etiologic evaluation identified serologic evidence of recent maternal parvovirus infection and a normal karyotype. The pregnancy ended in f…

Papular acrodermatitis of childhood related to poxvirus and parvovirus B19 infection.

Papular acrodermatitis of childhood (Gianotti-Crosti syndrome) is considered an unspecific cutaneous pattern related to an increasing number of infectious diseases. We report two cases of Gianotti-Crosti syndrome, one of which occurred in the setting of parvovirus B19 primary infection and the other followed poxvirus infection. Parvovirus B19 and poxvirus may represent new causative agents of Gianotti-Crosti syndrome.

Assessment of the specificity of a commercial human parvovirus B19 IgM assay.

BACKGROUND: It is important to investigate a possible cross-reaction of anti-rubella IgM in the IDEIA Parvovirus B19 IgM test because many B19 infections are either asymptomatic or have clinical symptoms similar to those of rubella virus infections. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) IgM, cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgM, measles IgM and rheumatoid factor (RF) IgM cross-reactions were also studied. OBJECTIVES: In the period from February to September 1994 (including a parvovirus B19 epidemic) more than 10,000 serum samples were examined for parvovirus B19 IgM in Denmark. This gave an opportunity to evaluate t…

Synthetic oligonucleotide cocktails as probes for detection of human parvovirus B19.

A cocktail of 10 oligonucleotides selected at intervals along the length of the genome of human parvovirus B19 was labelled enzymically with digoxigenin and chemically with either digoxigenin (DIG) or dinitrophenyl (DNP). Chemical labelling was easier and more practical for the production of large quantities of probe. Pools labelled with either digoxigenin or DNP could detect 10 fg of B19 DNA in a dot blot reaction using an alkaline phosphatase antibody conjugate and colorimetric detection. Formalin fixed tissue from 11 consecutive cases of fetal hydrops were examined by in situ hybridisation …

The frequency of human parvovirus B19 infection in nonimmune hydrops fetalis.

Intrauterine infection of human parvovirus B19 has recently been identified as an etiology for nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) and fetal death. To examine the frequency of B19 infection in cases of NIHF, forty two cases of NIHF of unknown cause were tested for the presence of B19 antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and B19 DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three maternal sera were positive for B19 IgM antibody and one fetal serum was positive for B19 DNA. Overall, four (10%) of the 42 cases were positive for B19 infection. All of the four cases positive for B19 infec…

[A study of epidemiology and fetal effects of human parvovirus B19 infection].

The risk of human parvovirus B19(B19) infection in pregnant women, the relationship between B19 and early spontaneous abortion, and the pathogenesis of non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) due to B19 infection were studied. 1) After the period of prevalence of erythema infectiosum(EI) between 1986 and 1987, the positive rate of anti B19 IgG antibody by sandwich ELISA in the sera from subjects aged 15-34 years old was 17-26%. This indicates that about 80% of pregnant women could be at the risk of B19 infection in future EI prevalence within ten years. 2) IgM antibody assayed by capture ELISA was p…

Persistence of B19 parvovirus in synovial membranes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Recent clinical observations support the hypothesis that persistent parvovirus B19 is a triggering factor of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in certain genetically predisposed individuals. If this hypothesis is correct, a number of RA patients may exhibit parvovirus B19 DNA in their synovial membranes. We tested the synovial tissue and peripheral blood leukocytes of 20 patients with RA, 24 patients with other arthritides or osteoarthritis (non-RA), and 34 healthy blood donors for the presence of parvovirus B19 DNA using specific DNA amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Using this techni…

Parvovirus as a cause of hydrops fetalis: detection by in situ DNA hybridisation.

Lung tissue from 13 cases of unexplained non-immunological hydrops fetalis was examined by in situ hybridisation to detect parvovirus. Four specimens contained parvovirus DNA in cells in the blood vessel lumina and alveoli. Twenty six control cases were negative for parvovirus DNA. As there was no known epidemic of parvovirus infection during the study period, this suggests that parvovirus is a relatively common cause of non-immunological hydrops fetalis. In situ hybridisation may have a role in clinical medicine, particularly for retrospective investigations.

Infection of newborn and fetal hamsters induced by inoculation of LuIII parvovirus.

The LuIII parvovirus was adapted to the newborn hamster and produced a systemic infection with massive intestinal hemorrhage. Inoculation of pregnant hamsters lead to transplacental infection of the fetuses and abortion. Most fetal deaths were observed in animals inoculated on days 8 and 10 of gestation. Virus was recovered from dead fetuses, placentas, and viable fetuses. Histological lesions were found in the heart, liver, kidney and CNS of infected fetuses.

Distinctive Inflammatory Traits of Parvovirus B19 Infection Associated with Persisting Autoimmunity.

BACKGROUND: Adult parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection occurs with cyclic outbreaks and can be associated with inflammatory manifestations mimicking or heralding the onset of systemic autoimmune diseases. Little is known about clinical traits distinguishing patients with transient vs. persisting manifestations. METHODS: Leveraging data from the 2024 B19V infection outbreak, we set up a retrospective, multicentre, observational study investigating the epidemiology and clinical phenotypes of patients with B19V infection presenting to tertiary care for immune-mediated manifestations, including patien…

Parvovirus B19 infection induces pure red cell aplasia after lung transplantation.

A man in his 50's with a history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) ov … as commenced, but the anemia persisted. Subsequent Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing revealed parvovirus B19 viremia, and bone marrow examination demonstrated erythroid hypoplasia with giant proerythroblasts, confirming parvovirus B19-associated pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). Treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) led to rapid hematologic impr …

Cryoglobulinaemic Vasculitis Secondary to Parvovirus B19 Infection: A Case-Based Review.

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a common viral agent that may cause arthritis in adults. In rare cases, B19V has been associated with cryoglobulinaemic vasculitis. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with an acute febrile polyarthritis and palpable purpura on the lower limbs. Laboratory investigations revealed low complement C4, positive IgM and IgG for Parvovirus B19, and detectable serum cryoglobulins, which immunofixation was consistent with type III cryoglobulinemia. The patient responded favourably to corticosteroid therapy, with complete resolution of symptoms. One month aft…

Managing recurrent parvovirus B19-associated anemia after a pediatric kidney transplant.

A 13-year-old girl who had a kidney transplant four weeks prior presented with a 10-day history of fatigue, paleness, and headache. On physical examination, tachycardia and paleness were noted. Laboratory testing was notable for severe anemia and mild leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) were negative and for parvovirus B19 (PVB19) was positive. Despite lower immunosuppression and administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) it persisted for 15 months, and frequent red blood cell transfusions were ne…

"Parvovirus B19-related Acute Hepatitis: Clinical Spectrum and Outcome in Children".

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Acute liver injury is a common manifestation of parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection in immunocompromised patients. However, literature in immunocompetent children is scarce. We aimed to study the clinicolaboratory features and outcome of hepatic involvement by PVB19 infection in hospitalized children. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed our prospectively kept database of all children (<18 years old) admitted with acute viral hepatitis (AVH), acute liver failure (ALF) or acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), and PVB19 infection between January 2010 and December 2023. Clinical f…

Assessing Elimination of Mouse Kidney Parvovirus from Cages by Mechanical Washing.

Mouse kidney parvovirus (MKPV), a newly identified parvovirus of the genus Chaphamaparvovirus, causes inclusion body nephropathy in severely immunocompromised mice and is prevalent in research mouse colonies. As nonenveloped viruses, mammalian parvoviruses are stable and generally resist thermal inactivation; however, as a novel and highly divergent parvovirus, the thermal stability of MKPV is undefined. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of cage sanitization in a mechanical washer to eliminate MKPV. Cages contaminated by MKPV-infected mice were assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: 1) co…
