Socioeconomic differences in children's victimization to maternal and paternal violence: a register-based study.

AIMS: To explore the potential of administrative data in assessment of the association between parental socioeconomic position (SEP) and children's violent victimization by biological parents. METHODS: A longitudinal register-linkage study based on child-mother and child-father data, including all children born in Finland between 1991 and 2017. The data included 1,535,428 children, 796,335 biological mothers, and 775,966 fathers. We used logistic regression with person-years as observations and cluster-robust standard errors to predict children's violent victimization in 2009-2018 and assesse

Congenital male genital malformations and paternal health: An analysis of the US claims data.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential association between paternal health and male genital malformations in the offspring. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 2007 to 2016 derived from the IBM MarketScan Research database, which reports on reimbursed private healthcare claims in the United States. The association between paternal comorbidities (defined as individual and combined measures) and genital malformations in male offspring was analyzed. RESULTS: Of 376,362 male births, 22% of fathers had at least one component of metabolic syndrome (≥1) prior to conception. Totals of 2880

Association of maternal and paternal perinatal depression and anxiety with infant development: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and paternal perinatal depression and anxiety are theorised to adversely impact infant development. Yet, few studies have assessed both mental health symptoms and clinical diagnoses within the one study. Moreover, research on fathers is limited. This study therefore aimed to examine the association between symptoms and diagnoses of maternal and paternal perinatal depression and anxiety with infant development. METHOD: Data were from the Triple B Pregnancy Cohort Study. Participants included 1539 mothers and 793 partners. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed using

Maternal, but not paternal, ratings of child preinjury functioning predict child posttraumatic stress.

Pretrauma internalizing and externalizing behaviors have been found to predict posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms (PTSS) in children following injury. However, child in-hospital self-report of pretrauma symptoms may be impacted by their injury and associated medical care (e.g., sedation/pain medications). Parental report of child pretrauma risk factors may be easier to capture; however, mothers and fathers differ in the extent to which they report, and agree on, internalizing versus externalizing behaviors in their child. The present study examined the differential utility of matern

Investigation of the risk of paternal cell contamination in PGT and the necessity of intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

ICSI is widely recommended for patients undergoing preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), but are sperm a potential source of paternal cell contamination in PGT? Semen samples were obtained from five normozoospermic men consenting to research. From each sample 1, 2, 4, 8 and 10 sperm were collected in PCR tubes and whole genome amplification according to PGT-A and PGT-SR processing protocols was undertaken. None of the 25 samples submitted (a total of 125 sperm) showed evidence of DNA amplification. Thus, paternal cell contamination resulting from using conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF

Associations Between Paternal Play and Executive Function in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

PURPOSE: Responsive and dynamic aspects of father-child play are associated with behavioral and neurocognitive development in children and could represent an important contributor to executive function (EF) skills for children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). This study examined associations between paternal behaviors during play and EF skills of DHH children and children with typical hearing (TH). METHOD: Father-child dyads in families with DHH children (n = 30) and TH children (n = 29) participated in a 15-min video-recorded free-play session that was coded for parental behaviors usi

Pregnancy outcomes following maternal or paternal exposure to teriflunomide in the Danish MS population.

Background Teriflunomide (TFL) is an oral drug used for treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Due to possible teratogenicity it is contraindicated in women of childbearing potential. Additionally, a low risk of male-mediated embryo-fetal toxicity has been described as the drug can be transmitted via semen. This study investigated the association of adverse perinatal outcomes in newborns with either maternal or paternal exposure to TFL. Methods The Danish Multiple Sclerosis Registry was used to identify all patients treated with teriflunomide from 1st of September 2013 to 31st of December 2018.

Paternal inheritance predicts earlier cardiovascular event onset in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disease, with an autosomal codominant inheritance, predisposing to premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Paternal or maternal inheritance of the FH-causing mutation may affect the FH phenotype in offspring, but the effect of the genetic transmission on cardiovascular disease risk remains to be established. The aim of the present study is to compare the incidence of cardiovascular events between patients with maternal vs paternal inheritance of familial hypercholesterolemia. METHODS: We prospectively studi

Paternal exposure to excessive methionine altered behavior and neurochemical activities in zebrafish offspring.

An increase in plasma L-methionine (Met) levels, even if transitory, can cause important toxicological alterations in the affected individuals. Met is essential in the regulation of epigenetic mechanisms and its influence on the subsequent generation has been investigated. However, few studies have explored the influence of a temporary increase in Met levels in parents on their offspring. This study evaluated the behavioral and neurochemical effects of parental exposure to high Met concentration (3 mM) in zebrafish offspring. Adult zebrafish were exposed to Met for 7 days, maintained for addit

Paternal USP26 mutations raise Klinefelter syndrome risk in the offspring of mice and humans.

Current understanding holds that Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is not inherited, but arises randomly during meiosis. Whether there is any genetic basis for the origin of KS is unknown. Here, guided by our identification of some USP26 variations apparently associated with KS, we found that knockout of Usp26 in male mice resulted in the production of 41, XXY offspring. USP26 protein is localized at the XY body, and the disruption of Usp26 causes incomplete sex chromosome pairing by destabilizing TEX11. The unpaired sex chromosomes then result in XY aneuploid spermatozoa. Consistent with our mouse re

Paternal genetic variants and risk of obstructive heart defects: A parent-of-origin approach.

Previous research on risk factors for obstructive heart defects (OHDs) focused on maternal and infant genetic variants, prenatal environmental exposures, and their potential interaction effects. Less is known about the role of paternal genetic variants or environmental exposures and risk of OHDs. We examined parent-of-origin effects in transmission of alleles in the folate, homocysteine, or transsulfuration pathway genes on OHD occurrence in offspring. We used data on 569 families of liveborn infants with OHDs born between October 1997 and August 2008 from the National Birth Defects Prevention

Association of preconception paternal health and adverse maternal outcomes among healthy mothers.

BACKGROUND: Maternal morbidity continues to be an issue of national and global concern. Paternal preconception health may play a significant role in pregnancy outcomes and has received less attention than maternal health. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between preconception paternal health and the risk for adverse maternal outcomes among healthy mothers. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective analysis of live births from 2009 through 2016 to healthy women aged 20 to 45 years recorded in the IBM Marketscan research database. Infants were linked to paired mothers and fa

Paternal Uniparental Disomy of the Entire Chromosome 20 in a Child with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome.

Epigenetic alterations at imprinted genes on different chromosomes have been linked to several imprinting disorders (IDs) such as Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) and pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1b (PHP1b). Here, we present a male patient with these two distinct IDs caused by two independent mechanisms-loss of methylation (LOM) at chromosome 11p15.5 associated with multi-locus imprinting disturbances (MLID and paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 20 (patUPD20). A clinical diagnosis of BWS was made based on the clinical features of macrosomia, macroglossia, and umbilical hernia. The dia

Oxytocin and CD38 in the paraventricular nucleus play a critical role in paternal aggression in mice.

In mammals, the development of healthy offspring requires maternal care. Behavior by lactating mothers toward other individuals is an important component of maternal aggression. However, it is unclear whether fathers display aggression primed by pups (an external factor), and the protection mechanism is poorly understood. To address this question, we examined paternal aggression in the ICR mouse strain. We found that sires exposed to cues from pups and lactating dams showed stronger aggression toward intruders than did sires that were deprived of family cues or exposed to nonlactating mates. c

Maternal and paternal exercise regulate offspring metabolic health and beta cell phenotype.

OBJECTIVE: Poor maternal and paternal environments increase the risk for obesity and diabetes in offspring, whereas maternal and paternal exercise in mice can improve offspring metabolic health. We determined the effects of combined maternal and paternal exercise on offspring health and the effects of parental exercise on offspring pancreas phenotype, a major tissue regulating glucose homeostasis. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Breeders were high fat fed and housed±running wheels before breeding (males) and before and during gestation (females). Offspring groups were: both parents sedentary (Se

Attachment insecurity accounts for the relationship between maternal and paternal maltreatment and adolescent health.

OBJECTIVES: Maltreatment is linked with poor health outcomes. Attachment and affect regulation may mitigate the long-term impact of these adverse experiences on health outcomes. Little is known about the relative impact of maternal versus paternal maltreatment and interparental violence (IPV) on general health status of female and male youth. METHOD: The present study examined the impact of exposure to maternal and paternal emotional and physical maltreatment, neglect, IPV, and cumulative maltreatment exposure in adolescence on general physical health problems reported five years later.
