Monitoring Disease Severity of Mild Cognitive Impairment from Single-Channel EEG Data Using Regression Analysis.

A deviation in the soundness of cognitive health is known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and it is important to monitor it early to prevent complicated diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). Traditionally, MCI severity is monitored with manual scoring using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). In this study, we propose a new MCI severity monitoring algorithm with regression analysis of extracted features of single-channel electro-encephalography (EEG) data by automatically generating severity scores equivalent to MoCA scores. We evaluated b

Distinct functional neutrophil phenotypes in sepsis patients correlate with disease severity.

PURPOSE: Sepsis is a clinical syndrome defined as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Sepsis is a highly heterogeneous syndrome with distinct phenotypes that impact immune function and response to infection. To develop targeted therapeutics, immunophenotyping is needed to identify distinct functional phenotypes of immune cells. In this study, we utilized our Organ-on-Chip assay to categorize sepsis patients into distinct phenotypes using patient data, neutrophil functional analysis, and proteomics. METHODS: Following informed consent, neutro

Dietary composition of adult eosinophilic esophagitis patients is related to disease severity.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the elimination diet, dietary composition may influence disease severity in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) through modulation of the immune response. AIM: To explore the immunomodulatory role of nutrition before and during elimination diet in adult EoE patients. METHODS: Nutritional intake was assessed in 39 Dutch adult EoE patients participating in the Supplemental Elemental Trial (Dutch trial registry NL6014, NTR6778) using 3-day food diaries. In this randomized controlled trial, diagnosed patients received either a four-food elimination diet alone

Azonal steatosis correlates with disease severity and poor outcome of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

OBJECTIVES: In this study we aimed to assess the clinicopathological characteristics and long-term prognosis of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) having distinct steatosis distribution patterns. METHODS: Clinicopathological data of 238 individuals with biopsy-confirmed NAFLD were collected. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis-clinical research network (NASH-CRN) and steatosis, activity and fibrosis (SAF)/fatty liver inhibition of progression (FLIP) algorithm were used. Cumulative incidence of liver-related events (LREs) was compared by Kaplan-Meier analysis. Univariate and multi

Utrophin correlates with disease severity in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

This month in Med, the description of an unusually severely affected DMD patient suffering from a large deletion in the dystrophin gene confirms that absence of utrophin worsens the dystrophy and supports the concept that utrophin upregulation ameliorates the pathology. This study may guide the development of dystrophin-based gene therapies.

Association of 4qA-Specific Distal D4Z4 Hypomethylation With Disease Severity and Progression in Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine whether the regional methylation levels at the most distal D4Z4 repeat units (RU) in the 4qA-permissive haplotype were associated with disease severity and progression in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy type 1 (FSHD1). METHODS: This 21-year, retrospective, observational cohort study was conducted at the Fujian Neuromedical Center (FNMC) in China. Methylation levels of the most distal D4Z4 RU, including 10 CpGs, were assessed in all participants by bisulfite sequencing. Patients with FSHD1 were stratified into 4 group

Longitudinal study of disease severity and external factors in cognitive failure after COVID-19 among Indonesian population.

The COVID-19 infection is assumed to induce cognitive failure. Identifying the relationship between COVID-19, the effect of vaccination and medication, and accommodating non-COVID-19 factors to cognitive failure is essential. This study was conducted in Indonesia from September 2021 to January 2023. Demographic information, clinical data, comorbidities, vaccination, and medication during COVID-19 were obtained, as well as a 6-month cognitive assessment with Cognitive Failures Questionnaire/CFQ, Fatigue Severity Score, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7). A Structural Equation Model explai

Enzymatic properties and clinical associations of serum alpha-galactosidase A in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have revealed an association between Parkinson's disease (PD) and Fabry disease, a lysosomal storage disorder; however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the enzymatic properties of serum alpha-galactosidase A (GLA) and compared them with the clinical parameters of PD. METHODS: The study participants consisted of 66 sporadic PD patients and 52 controls. We measured serum GLA activity and calculated the apparent Michaelis constant (Km ) and maximal velocity (Vmax ) by Lineweaver-Burk plot analysis. Serum GLA protein con

Validation of the motion sickness severity scale: Secondary analysis of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of a treatment for motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is characterized by nausea and vomiting among a constellation of symptoms. Symptom severity is dynamic and distressing. Most validated motion sickness scales are time-intensive and effortful, with alternative scales having uncertain performance or non-specific measures. A validated instrument allowing for facile, rapid assessment of core motion sickness symptom severity would therefore be valuable. We assessed the performance of the Motion Sickness Severity Scale (MSSS), a six-item questionnaire designed to measure real-time motion sickness symptoms. METHODS: MSSS

Association of exosomal miR-96-5p and miR-146a-5p with the disease severity in dengue virus infection.

Exosomes are small extracellular vesicles secreted by cells and have a major role in cell-to-cell signaling. As dengue infection progresses from a mild to a severe form of infection, the exosome's microRNA (miRNA) composition might change, which may contribute to pathogenesis. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of serum exosomal miRNAs was performed and their involvement in dengue virus-induced disease progression in an Indian cohort was assessed. Small RNA-seq showed 50 differentially expressed exosomal miRNAs that were significantly dysregulated during dengue infection. After extensive

Impact of apoptotic biomarkers for prognosis of dengue disease severity among eastern Indian patients.

Dengue virus (DENV) induced severe manifestations is a precursor for fatality among infected patients. Previous autopsy examinations of severe dengue (SD) patients reported presence of apoptotic cells in liver, brain, intestinal and lung tissues. Thus, serum-level of major apoptotic proteins of dengue patients was evaluated in the current study, along with their biochemical parameters. Patients were categorized according to World Health Organization (WHO)-defined classification. DENV-infection was screened among 165 symptomatic patients by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain re

Selected cardiovascular risk factors in early stages of chronic kidney disease.

Cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke and atherosclerosis, are common in patients with chronic kidney disease. Aside from the standard biomarkers, measured to determine cardiovascular risk, new ones have emerged: markers of oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation, vascular endothelium dysfunction, atherosclerosis, organ calcification and fibrosis. Unfortunately, their utility for routine clinical application remains to be elucidated. A causal relationship between new markers and cardiovascular diseases in patients with chroni

Visual recovery in patients with optic neuritis and visual loss to no light perception.

We reviewed the records of 151 patients with optic neuritis examined over an eight-year period. Of these patients, 12 developed visual acuity of no light perception during the first episode of optic neuritis in the affected eye. Eight of the 12 patients recovered visual acuity of 20/40 or better. Of these, five patients had visual acuity of 20/20 or better, one had visual acuity of 20/25, one had visual acuity of 20/30, and one had visual acuity of 20/40. Four of the 12 patients recovered peripheral visual fields but had dense central scotomas and visual acuity of less than 20/400. Dyschromato
