Learner-generated drawing for phonological and orthographic dyslexic readers.

This study presents an examination of learner-generated drawing for different reading comprehension subtypes of dyslexic students and control students. The participants were 22 phonological dyslexic students, 20 orthographic dyslexic students, 21 double-deficit dyslexic students, and 45 age-, gender-, and IQ-matched control students. The major evaluation tools included word recognition task, orthographic task, phonological awareness task, and scenery texts and questions. Comparisons of the four groups of students showed differences among phonological dyslexia, orthographic dyslexia, double-def

Maturation of early visual processing investigated by a pattern-reversal habituation paradigm is altered in migraine.

Evidence for a disturbed maturation of information processing in migraine came recently from evoked and event-related potential studies during childhood. In adult migraineurs, deficient habituation is proposed as principal interictal abnormality and was found inter alia for Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs). This study investigated response and habituation to pattern-reversal VEPs and its maturation in 102 children with primary headache (migraine with and without aura, tension-type headache) and 79 healthy controls from 6 to 18 years. A reduction of N180 latency from pre- to postpubertal age ref

Detection of symmetry and anti-symmetry.

To assess the role of second-order channels in symmetry perception we measured the effects of check size, spatial frequency content, eccentricity and grey scale range on the detection of symmetrical and anti-symmetrical patterns. Thresholds for symmetrical stimuli were only moderately affected by these manipulations. Anti-symmetrical stimuli composed of large black and white checks elicited low thresholds. However, anti-symmetry became essentially undetectable at small check sizes. Removing low frequencies from large-check-size, anti-symmetrical stimuli had little effect on thresholds whereas

Representation of the perceived 3-D object shape in the human lateral occipital complex.

We used human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to test whether the human lateral occipital complex (LOC), an area known to be involved in the analysis of visual shape, represents the perceived 3-D shape of objects or simply their 2-D contours. We employed an fMRI adaptation paradigm, in which repeated presentation of a stimulus results in decreased responses compared to responses to different stimuli. We found adaptation in the LOC for images of objects with the same perceived 3-D shape structure but different 2-D contours that resulted from small rotations of the objects in the fr

Inability of rhesus monkey area V1 to discriminate between self-induced and externally induced retinal image slip.

Retinal image slip can result from an eye movement across a stationary object or alternatively from motion of the object while the eyes are stationary. The ability to discriminate between these two kinds of retinal image slip is necessary for the perception of a stable visual world. In order to determine if this ability is already present in monkey visual area V1, we asked if single V1 units are able to differentiate between externally and self-induced retinal image slip. Externally induced retinal image slip was realized in the 'object motion' condition (OMC) by moving a behaviourally irrelev

Phoria, Hering's laws, and monocular perception of direction.

By recording eye movements while subjects fixated a stationary stimulus and reported on its apparent position, four experiments tested whether Hering's laws of visual direction describe monocular perception of egocentric direction. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 alternately covered each eye. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that the stimulus appeared to displace leftward when the left eye was occluded, and vice versa. The apparent displacement was correlated with lateral heterophoria in the occluded eye, and phoria was necessary for the illusory displacement. As a descriptive model, these results expand th

Expressive and perceptual asymmetries of the resting face.

Lateral facial composites reveal the asymmetry of the resting face. In the current research, we created lateral composites of 30 resting faces, then had subjects compare the two composites of a face with a depiction of the whole face in either normal- or mirror-image. Results indicate that the side of the face in a subject's left visual hemi-space dominates facial recognition. The magnitude of this bias can be altered by priming tasks. It is a bias in facial perception, not memory.

Pattern electroretinogram in multiple sclerosis.

The pattern electroretinogram obtained in patients affected by multiple sclerosis were compared with those in a normal population. The pattern electroretinogram amplitude in multiple sclerosis optic neuritis frequently appeared normal, but pattern electroretinogram amplitude abnormalities were found in patients suffering from recurrent multiple sclerosis optic neuritis. Pattern electroretinogram examination appears a useful method in the differential diagnosis between axonal and demyelinating optic nerve impairment.

No evidence for facilitated response-related processing in contextual cueing.

Visual search can be facilitated by learning statistical regularities; for example, repeated exposure to the same spatial layout of search items can speed target detection (contextual cueing). While contextual cueing is usually attributed to improved attentional guidance towards the target, some studies have proposed that the benefit for repeated search layouts may also facilitate response-related processing after the target has been localized. To test this latter account, the current study systematically manipulated the difficulty of the target-related decision by varying the number of possib

Comparing sentence superiority effects in deaf and hearing readers: The role of syntactic and visuo-attentional processing.

Reading requires the integration of linguistic and visuo-attentional information to support efficient word identification within context. The sentence superiority effect (SSE) illustrates this integration, showing that words are recognized more accurately when embedded in a grammatical sentence than in a scrambled sequence. While well established in hearing readers, the extent to which deaf readers exhibit this effect remains unclear. The present study examined the SSE in 18 deaf and 20 hearing adults using the Rapid Parallel Visual Presentation (RPVP) paradigm. Participants identified target

Salience maps for judgments of frontal plane distance, centroids, numerosity, and letter identity inferred from substance-invariant processing.

A salience map is a topographic map that has inputs at each x,y location from many different feature maps and summarizes the combined salience of all those inputs as a real number, salience, which is represented in the map. Of the more than 1 million Google references to salience maps, nearly all use the map for computing the relative priority of visual image components for subsequent processing. We observe that salience processing is an instance of substance-invariant processing, analogous to household measuring cups, weight scales, and measuring tapes, all of which make single-number substan

Functional characterization of correct and incorrect feature integration.

Our sensory system constantly receives information from the environment and our own body. Despite our impression to the contrary, we remain largely unaware of this information and often cannot report it correctly. Although perceptual processing does not require conscious effort on the part of the observer, it is often complex, giving rise to errors such as incorrect integration of features (illusory conjunctions). In the present study, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the neural bases of feature integration in a dual task that produced ~30% illusions. A distributed set of

The role of animal faces in the animate-inanimate distinction in the ventral temporal cortex.

Animate and inanimate objects elicit distinct response patterns in the human ventral temporal cortex (VTC), but the exact features driving this distinction are still poorly understood. One prominent feature that distinguishes typical animals from inanimate objects and that could potentially explain the animate-inanimate distinction in the VTC is the presence of a face. In the current fMRI study, we investigated this possibility by creating a stimulus set that included animals with faces, faceless animals, and inanimate objects, carefully matched in order to minimize other visual differences. Reading Disability in Chinese Children Learning English as an L2.

To examine whether there are common or specific deficits of reading disability (RD) in first (L1) and second languages (L2), Chinese children (9-11 years, N = 76) with or without RD who learn English as an L2 were studied during a visual word rhyming judgment task. Evidence was found for common deficits in L1 and L2 in visuo-orthographic processes in left inferior temporal gyrus and left precuneus, as well as in phonological processes in left dorsal inferior frontal gyrus as children with RD showed less activation than controls in both languages. Furthermore, the visuo-orthographic deficit app

Reduced automatic approach tendencies towards task-relevant and task-irrelevant food pictures in Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) patients are characterized by an excessive restriction of their food-intake. Prior research using an Affective Simon Task (AST) with food as a task-irrelevant feature, provided evidence for the view that AN patients' ability to refrain from food is facilitated by reduced automatic approach tendencies towards food. However, because food was task-irrelevant (i.e., participants had to base their reaction on the perspective of the picture and not on its content), the findings may in fact reflect a relatively strong ability to ignore the content of t

Optimizing text for an individual's visual system: The contribution of visual crowding to reading difficulties.

Reading is a complex process that involves low-level visual processing, phonological processing, and higher-level semantic processing. Given that skilled reading requires integrating information among these different systems, it is likely that reading difficulty-known as dyslexia-can emerge from impairments at any stage of the reading circuitry. To understand contributing factors to reading difficulties within individuals, it is necessary to diagnose the function of each component of the reading circuitry. Here, we investigated whether adults with dyslexia who have impairments in visual proces

Effects of Implied Motion and Facing Direction on Positional Preferences in Single-Object Pictures.

Palmer, Gardner, and Wickens studied aesthetic preferences for pictures of single objects and found a strong inward bias: Right-facing objects were preferred left-of-center and left-facing objects right-of-center. They found no effect of object motion (people and cars showed the same inward bias as chairs and teapots), but the objects were not depicted as moving. Here we measured analogous inward biases with objects depicted as moving with an implied direction and speed by having participants drag-and-drop target objects into the most aesthetically pleasing position. In Experiment 1, human fig

Beyond the FFA: The role of the ventral anterior temporal lobes in face processing.

Extensive research has supported the existence of a specialized face-processing network that is distinct from the visual processing areas used for general object recognition. The majority of this work has been aimed at characterizing the response properties of the fusiform face area (FFA) and the occipital face area (OFA), which together are thought to constitute the core network of brain areas responsible for facial identification. Although accruing evidence has shown that face-selective patches in the ventral anterior temporal lobes (vATLs) are interconnected with the FFA and OFA, and that t
