An 8-year-old boy with idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis and multiple fractures had three abnormalities of bone mineral metabolism: calcitonin deficiency, elevated serum calcitriol concentrations, and hypercalciuria. Twenty-nine patients with chronic renal failure were examined both during the predialytic stage and after active treatment (dialysis, transplantation) for upper GI diseases. They underwent a gastric dose-response secretion test, gastroduodenoscopy, radiologic upper GI series, and fasting serum gastrin determination. In 99 patients with different types of gastroduodenal ulcer and gastric carcinoma the intragastric concentrations of bile acids and lysolecithin was analyzed under fasting, basal and pentagastrin-stimulated conditions. In order to evaluate whether prepyloric ulcer (PPU) could be classified as an intermediate ulcer type between duodenal ulcer (DU) and gastric ulcer (GU), fasting serum gastrin as well as basal and pentagastrin-stimulated acid secretion were studied. We evaluated the action of cholecystokini-octapeptide (CCK-OP) on lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure in the opossum. LES pressure was … CK-OP appeared to be nonspecific because TTX also partially antagonized LES contractions induced by pentagastrin, substance P, and bethanechol. We conclude that CCK-OP at doses that cause LES relaxation in other species induces LES contraction in the opossum. This pressor effect appears to be elicited by a direct action of the hormone on LES smooth muscle.

A novel cannula insert was used to correct erratic emptying in Heidenhain pouch dogs. The insert restored the recovery of histamine or pentagastrin stimulated gastric acid secretion to that obtained from normal emptying pouch dogs, probably by displacing obstructing tissue within the pouch.
