Differential effects of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in children with severe congenital neutropenia.

Severe congenital neutropenia (SCN) is a disorder of myelopoiesis characterized by severe neutropenia secondary to a maturational arrest at … e patient, the increase in ANC was associated with an improvement of a severe pneumonitis caused by Peptostreptococcus and resistant to antibiotic treatment. No severe bacterial infections occurred in any of the patients during CSF treatment. All patients tolerated rhGM-CSF and rhG-CSF treatment without severe side effects. These results demonstrate the beneficial e …

Microbiome signatures for detection of colorectal lesions in population-based FIT screening.

The gut microbiome has been linked to colorectal cancer (CRC) development, with microbe-based classifiers distinguishing between CRC patient … riminative ability for CRC. We confirmed enrichment of bacteria such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Peptostreptococcus stomatis in CRC. In contrast, other bacteria previously associated with the presence of CRC, including Hungatella hathewayi and Clostridium symbiosum, as well as pks-negative Escherichia coli, were enriched in those with no neoplastic findings, sugg …

Isolation of bacteria from cervical lymph nodes in patients with oral cancer.

Thirty patients with oral mucosal cancer were studied in relation to oral mucosal damage and bacterial translocation to the regional lymph n … us, Escherichia, Klebsiella etc.) were also found in the lymph nodes. Among the anaerobic bacteria, Peptostreptococcus spp. were isolated from 12 patients. Damaged oral mucosa in patients with oral cancer might allow the new bacterial colonization on the surface and subsequently drain the bacteria into the regional lymph nodes as well as the general circulation.

Susceptibility of oral bacteria to phenoxyethanol and phenoxyethanol/chlorhexidine combinations.

A total of 57 bacterial strains (26 different species) which may be isolated from subgingival plaque were tested for their in vitro susceptibility to phenoxycthanol, a commonly-used antiseptic and preservative. Ninety-five percent of the strains, including those associated with chronic inflammatory periodontal disease, were susceptible to concentrations of phenoxyethanol used topically (2% w/v). Phenoxyethanol at a concentration of 1% (w/v) was also found that to have a rapid bactericidal effect achieving a 99.9% kill in 5 minutes or less for species such as Bacterodides gingivalis, Fusobacter

Anaerobic bacteria isolated from foot infections in diabetic patients: in vitro susceptibility to nine antibiotics.

Twenty-nine isolates of anaerobic bacteria from foot infections in diabetic patients were tested, using the agar dilution method, for in vitro susceptibility to nine antimicrobial agents. Imipenem and metronidazole showed excellent activity; clindamycin and chloramphenicol were next in terms of efficacy. Cefoxitin and moxalactam demonstrated good activity, although three isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group were resistant to moxalactam. Penicillin G, cefotaxime, and cefoperazone showed poor activity against the B fragilis group but were quite active against other anaerobes. Among the new

Bacterial arthritis in the adult.

A brief review of bacterial arthritis as seen at the Mayo Clinic in the years 1958 through 1973 has been presented with a selected literature review. Once considered a disease of children and adolescents, this disease now is seen more often in adults, especially in those who are elderly, are chronically ill, or are receiving medications that lower the host resistance in invading bacteria. The diagnosis must be made early, with rapid isolation and identification of the organism. Proper antibacterial drugs should be selected on the basis of in vitro susceptibility tests. The joint should be eith

Filifactor alocis infection and inflammatory responses in the mouse subcutaneous chamber model.

Recent microbiome studies have implicated a role for Filifactor alocis in periodontal disease. In this study, we investigated the colonization and survival properties of F. alocis in a mouse subcutaneous chamber model of infection and characterized host innate immune responses. An infection of 10(9) F. alocis successfully colonized all chambers; however, the infection was cleared after 72 h. F. alocis elicited a local inflammatory response with neutrophils recruited into the chambers at 2 h postinfection along with an increase in levels of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin 1β (IL-1β),

[An unusual endometritis].

We report a case of pyometra without any related risk factor. This leads to a severe septic shock. Evolution was successful because of quick surgical management. We report literature management of such infection. Although pyometra is an uncommon disease, it should be kept in mind as delayed management may lead to fatal outcome.

Neutrophil Killing of Peptoanaerobacter stomatis Requires TAK1-Driven Degranulation.

INTRODUCTION: Dysregulated neutrophil functions play a crucial role in the onset and progression of periodontitis. Peptoanaerobacter stomatis is an emerging oral bacterium associated with periodontitis and is known to activate neutrophils through TLR2/6, leading to ROS production, granule release, and neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation. In this study, we characterized MAPK kinases that regulate these neutrophil responses and determined the mechanism responsible for bacterial killing. METHODS: Human neutrophils were challenged with P. stomatis, and kinase activation was assessed by
