Annoyance, recognition and detection of noise from a single wind turbine were studied by means of a two-stage listening experiment with 50 participants with normal hearing abilities. In-situ recordings made at close distance from a 1.8-MW wind turbine operating at 22 rpm were mixed with road traffic noise, and processed to simulate indoor sound pressure levels at LAeq 40 dBA. In a first part, where people were unaware of the true purpose of the experiment, samples were played during a quiet leisure activity. Under these conditions, pure wind turbine noise gave very similar annoyance ratings as

Theories of emotion propose that responses to emotional pictures can occur independently of whether or not people are aware of the picture content. Because evidence from dissociation paradigms is inconclusive, we manipulated picture awareness gradually and studied whether emotional responses varied with degree of awareness. Spider fearful and non-fearful participants viewed pictures of spiders and flowers at four levels of backward masking while electrodermal activity and heart rate were measured continuously. Recognition ratings confirmed that participants' picture awareness decreased with ma

The relationship between neural activity and object perception has received considerable attention using stimulus manipulations such as masking or dichoptic presentation. Here we investigate the same problem by occluding objects with an opaque screen that acts to dissociate the direct perception of the object from the awareness of its presence. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure brain activity when subjects viewed objects (faces and houses) that underwent occlusion and found that the response of the majority of the fusiform face area (FFA) and lateral occipital cortex is

The ability of 20 adult dyslexic readers to extract frequency information from successive tone pairs was compared with that of IQ-matched controls using temporal order discrimination and auditory backward recognition masking (ABRM) tasks. In both paradigms, the interstimulus interval (ISI) between tones in a pair was either short (20 ms) or long (200 ms). Temporal order discrimination was better for both groups of listeners at long than at short ISIs, but no group differences in performance were observed at either ISI. Performance on the ABRM task was also better at long than at short ISIs and

The goal of this study was to determine the extent to which the difficulty frequently experienced by hearing-impaired listeners in understanding noisy speech can be clinically described in terms of the auditory site of lesion. To this end, shifts of speech reception threshold in noise, using standardized franco-québécois bisyllabic word lists, were obtained from noise-exposed workers and compared to Plomp's model to ascertain content validity. Shifts resulted from monaural listening to a broad-band speech spectrum noise held constant at 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio. In this manner, increasing th

This study assessed normal frequency discrimination ability in the chinchilla and determined how this ability changes as a function of an experimentally induced sensorineural hearing loss. Four chinchillas were trained by the methods of positive reinforcement to report absolute thresholds and frequency difference limens (FDLs). Subjects were then treated with the aminoglycosidic antibiotic amikacin until a 30-dB hearing loss was measured at 10.0 kHz. Absolute and frequency difference thresholds were determined during and after drug treatment. When post-drug thresholds had stabilized, subjects

Presbycusic Ss (N: 64) were studied using tests for cochlear functions (SISI test, Metz test, delta F threshold, remote masking), for retrocochlear involvement (tone-decay test), and for central auditory impairment (tonal binaural MLD, ipsi- vs contralateral acoustic reflex). Recruitment was present in about half the cases; remote masking (supposed a test of stiffness of the cochlear partition) was almost always pathological; tone decay rarely was abnormal; tonal MLD and/or acoustic reflexometry yielded pathologic values in more than half of the Ss. Tonal test patterns demonstrated that in pre

Masking level differences (MLD) for 500 Hz pure tones and for spondees were obtained from 48 subjects. Twelve were without otologic or neurologic complaints (normal), 12 had high frequency, noise-induced hearing losses, 12 were diagnosed otologically as having Ménière's disorder, and 12 had neurologically diagnosed central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Results indicated that high frequency, noise-induced hearing losses do not affect MLD for 500 Hz stimuli, but do diminish the size of MLD for speech. Masking level differences for both 500 Hz and spondees were decreased for the Ménière's disor

Visual perception is defined by the unique spatial interactions that distinguish it from the point-to-point precision of a photometer. Over several decades, Lothar Spillmann has made key observations about the nature of these interactions and the role of context in perception. Our lab has explored the perceptual properties of spatial interactions and more generally the importance of visual context for neuronal responses and perception. Our investigations into the spatiotemporal dynamics of lightness provide insight into underlying mechanisms. For example, backward masking and luminance modulat

To study the olfactory perceptual interaction of odorants (OPIO) in binary mixtures containing maltol, a simple and efficient analysis method was developed. This method correlated three variables of the binary mixture: two rates of change in perceived odor intensities of two odorants within the binary mixtures, and the degree of overall odor synergy exhibited by the binary mixtures. By creating a three-dimensional scatter matrix with the variables, the changes in odor intensity of the binary mixture due to OPIO were visualized. The results revealed that the proportions of mutual antagonism, op

UNLABELLED: Perceptual judgments can be made on the basis of different kinds of information: state-based access to specific details that differentiate two similar images, or strength-based assessments of relational match/mismatch. We explored state- and strength-based perception in eleven right-hemisphere stroke patients, and examined lesion overlap images to gain insight into the neural underpinnings of these different kinds of perceptual judgments. Patients and healthy controls were presented with pairs of scenes that were either identical or differed in that one scene was slightly expanded

In visual search for pop-out targets, reaction times are facilitated when the target on the current trial appears at a previous target location, and inhibited when it appears at a previous distractor location, relative to when it appears at a previously empty (neutral) location (Maljkovic and Nakayama, Perception and Psychophysics 58:977-991, 1996). However, while normal subjects are able to positively/negatively tag selected target/rejected distractor locations to guide search on the next trial, patients with visual hemi-neglect may have a (uni- or bilateral) deficit in these functions that m

Conscious experience is an essential part of normal human life and interaction with the environment. Yet the nature of consciousness and conscious perception remains a mystery. Because of its subjective nature, consciousness has been difficult to investigate scientifically, but clues have been gained through studies involving patients with cortical lesions. During the past decade, the development of event-related fMRI has provided insights into aspects of conscious perception in control subjects and patients with cortical lesions by correlating awareness and performance with neural activity du

BACKGROUND: Neural efficiency refers to the brain's ability to function with reduced resource expenditure while maintaining high performance levels. Previous research has demonstrated that table tennis athletes have greater neural efficiency at the conscious level. However, it is unknown whether they exhibit greater neural efficiency at the unconscious level. Therefore, this study aims to investigate unconscious perceptual processing and neural efficiency in elite table tennis athletes through tasks involving the judgment of spin serves.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if a cloth facemask could affect physiological and perceptual responses to exercise at distinct exercise intensities in healthy young individuals.
METHODS: Nine participants (sex, female/male: 6/3; age: 13±1 years; VO2peak: 44.5±5.5 mL/kg/min) underwent a progressive square-wave test at four intensities: (1) 80% of ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT), (2) VAT, and (3) 40% between VAT and [Formula: see text] wearing a triple-layered cloth facemask or not. Participants then completed a final stage to exhaustion at a running speed equivalent to the maximum achieved du

INTRODUCTION: Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs) are frequently used exercises in voice therapy. An important shortcoming to most SOVTEs is the inability to include continuous speech in these exercises. A variation of water-resistance therapy (WRT), during which a patient phonates through a resonance tube ending in water, was developed to include continuous speech: the semi-occluded water resistance ventilation mask (SOVM-WR). The current study investigated the immediate effects of this innovative technique on vocal outcomes of women with dysphonia.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphonia is a potential long-term complication of preterm birth. Childhood voice disorders caused by vocal hyperfunction resolve with pubertal changes to the vocal mechanism in many cases. In extremely preterm children, whose voice quality is affected by supraglottic hyperfunction adapted secondary to underlying structural laryngeal pathology sustained during neonatal intubation, the prognosis is unknown.
METHODS: A pilot study was conducted to assess the incidence and severity of dysphonia in children born at < 25 weeks' gestation. Ten individuals, aged between 9.67 and 17.08

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The present research compares the efficacy of using the Dysphonic Severity Percentage (DSP) scale to the equal-appearing interval scale posttherapy. The initial pretherapy investigation was conducted to determine a more quantitative measure to rate the severity of dysphonia perceptually, because rating scales have shown considerable interrater variability. The posttherapy study is a follow-up to the initial research.
METHODS: The initial research involved counting the nondysphonic syllables in 10 participants with moderate-to-severe dysphonia (phonotrauma) to obtain a D

In multi-source auditory environments, effective listening requires segregation and selective attention to sound streams of interest. School-age children often perform worse than adults under these conditions, but the component skills responsible for child-adult differences are poorly understood. This study measured masked detection thresholds for three groups of children (5-7, 8-10, and 11-13 yrs) and adults, all with normal hearing. The masker was a continuous stream of four-tone bursts, with the frequencies of those four tones randomized for each burst. The signal was a single tone added to

PURPOSE: Tools that can reliably measure changes in the perception of tinnitus following interventions are lacking. The minimum masking level, defined as the lowest level at which tinnitus is completely masked, is a candidate for quantifying changes in tinnitus perception. In this study, we aimed to determine minimal clinically important differences for minimum masking level.
METHOD: A 3-month tinnitus intervention combining counseling and sound therapy was conducted in 74 participants with chronic tinnitus. Minimum masking levels were measured at baseline and 3 months. The clinical global im
