Designing and evaluating LLM-driven coaching agents for VR public speaking practice.

INTRODUCTION: Public speaking practice in Virtual Reality (VR) provides an immersive and controllable setting, yet many existing systems offer limited adaptive guidance beyond exposure itself. Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) create opportunities for designing coaching interactions that are personalized, context-aware, and socially supportive. METHODS: We designed a VR public speaking system in which embodied virtual judges delivered spoken and textual, performance-contingent coaching based on automatic speech recognition, speech synthesis, gaze-related cues, and structured pro

Screening for Generalized Anxiety Disorder From Acoustic and Linguistic Features of Impromptu Speech: Prediction Model Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Frequent interaction with mental health professionals is required to screen, diagnose, and track mental health disorders. However, high costs and insufficient access can make frequent interactions difficult. The ability to assess a mental health disorder passively and at frequent intervals could be a useful complement to the conventional treatment. It may be possible to passively assess clinical symptoms with high frequency by characterizing speech alterations collected using personal smartphones or other wearable devices. The association between speech features and mental health d

Implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome.

The study investigated implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and its association with clinical parameters. Implicit memory refers to the influence of past experience on current behavior without conscious awareness of these experiences. Eighteen FMS patients and 25 healthy individuals accomplished a word-stem completion task. As possible factors mediating the expected impairment, pain severity, emotional disorders, and medication were taken into account. The patients displayed markedly reduced task performance and higher levels of depression and anxiety. Among the clinical fea

Anxiety state impact on recovery of runners with lower extremity injuries.

This prospective cohort study examined the impact of high anxiety levels on psychological state and gait performance during recovery in runners with lower body injuries. Recreational runners diagnosed with lower body injuries who had reduced running volume (N = 41) were stratified into groups using State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scores: high anxiety (H-Anx; STAI ≥40 points) and low anxiety (L-Anx; STAI <40 points). Runners were followed through rehabilitation to return-to-run using monthly surveys. Main outcome measures included kinesiophobia (Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, TSK-11), Posit

Drivers of Academic Procrastination and Achievement: A Moderated Mediation Analysis in Students With and Without Specific Learning Disabilities.

Academic procrastination, increasingly prevalent among students, is posing challenges to academic success. In particular, students with specific learning disabilities (SLDs) in higher education (HE) often experience increased anxiety, along with lower self-efficacy, which may heighten their vulnerability to the negative effects of academic procrastination. This study was designed to investigate how academic procrastination relates to academic achievement (grade point average-GPA) and to examine whether this relationship is mediated by learning and performance self-efficacy and moderated by anx

[Anxiolytics in man: studies on sleep and performance (author's transl)].

The development of the benzodiazepin molecule has led to drugs which are specially indicated in the management of anxiety. Such drugs may be ingested overnight in which a beneficial effect on sleep is followed by an anxiolytic effect the next day, or during the day. In each case it is desirable that their day time effect is without or with only minimal impairment of performance. In the present paper studies on the effects of two anxiolytic (potassium chlorazepate and clobazam) on sleep and on performance will be reviewed. Potassium chlorazepate is usually given as a single dose (15 mg) overnig

Anxiety disorders and the use and abuse of drugs.

Substance abuse continues to be a growing problem--both in the United States and worldwide. Moderate alcohol consumption reduces anxiety, but alcohol abuse actually increases anxiety and impairs judgment and performance. Research data indicate that phobic anxiety is more common than general anxiety as a prelude to alcohol dependence. Benzodiazepines are widely used throughout the world in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Patients who take benzodiazepines for clinical anxiety rarely exceed the prescribed dosage: benzodiazepine abuse is more likely to occur in those who abuse other drugs. For

Involvement of the GABAA receptor α subunit in the mode of action of etifoxine.

Etifoxine (EFX) is a non-benzodiazepine psychoactive drug which exhibits anxiolytic effects through a dual mechanism, by directly binding to GABAA receptors (GABAARs) and to the mitochondrial 18-kDa translocator protein, resulting in the potentiation of the GABAergic function. The β subunit subtype plays a key role in the EFX-GABAAR interaction, however this does not explain the anxiolytic effects of this drug. Here, we combined behavioral and electrophysiological experiments to challenge the role of the GABAAR α subunit in the EFX mode of action. After single administrations of anxiolytic dos

Increased p-Tau181 Levels After Overnight Wakefulness Are Associated With Neuroticism in Young Women.

Night shift work can impair attention and increase biomarkers linked to neurodegenerative processes. Understanding factors that influence resilience to, or vulnerability under, sleep loss is therefore essential for identifying groups at particular risk. In this within-subjects study, we examined two potential modulators of vulnerability in 54 healthy, naturally cycling women aged 21-33 years: the ovarian hormone estradiol, known for its neuroprotective properties and the personality trait neuroticism, previously associated with stress sensitivity. Participants completed one night of habitual s

Exploring the role of post-error processing in social anxiety across age.

BACKGROUND: Error monitoring, a neurocognitive process reflecting self-detection of errors, has been proposed as a marker of social anxiety. However, the way in which this marker relates to social anxiety is not consistent across age, as older children and adolescents with anxiety exhibit heightened error monitoring and younger children with anxiety exhibit diminished error monitoring. One way to contextualize this inconsistency and provide insight into childhood social anxiety is to examine the less-studied consequences of error monitoring, termed post-error processing. METHODS: We employed

Intolerance of uncertainty and decisions about delayed, probabilistic rewards: A replication and extension of Luhmann, C. C., Ishida, K., & Hajcak, G. (2011).

Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) is thought to lead to maladaptive behaviours and dysfunctional decision making, both in the clinical and healthy population. The seminal study reported by Luhmann and collaborators in 2011 [1] showed that IU was negatively associated with choosing a delayed, but more probable and valuable, reward over choosing an immediate, but less probable and valuable, reward. These findings have been widely disseminated across the field of personality and individual differences because of their relevance for the understanding of the role of IU in the development and maintena

Does rumination mediate the relationship between attentional control and symptoms of depression?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that impaired attentional control (AC) promotes the use of maladaptive emotional regulation strategies, such as rumination, with subsequent increase in risk of depression. METHOD: This study examined this hypothesis in a healthy community sample. Questionnaire measures of depression, anxiety, rumination and self-reported AC (shifting and focusing) were used, as well as an attention performance task (Attention Network Task; ANT). RESULTS: While self-report and performance measures of AC were not significantly related, both depression and rumina

Defeatist performance beliefs in college students: Transdiagnostic associations with symptoms and daily goal-directed behavior.

Defeatist performance beliefs are prevalent and linked to decreased motivation in people with psychological disorders. In this study, we investigated whether defeatist performance beliefs were associated with transdiagnostic psychopathology risk in people with no history of formal diagnosis and whether defeatist performance beliefs impacted engagement in daily goal-directed behavior. One hundred and two college students completed self-report measures of defeatist performance beliefs and risk for depression, mania, and psychosis. Sixty-one of these participants were randomly selected to identif
