Secondary peritonitis accounts for 1% of urgent or emergent hospital admissions and is the second leading cause of sepsis in patients in intensive care units globally. Overall mortality is 6%, but mortality rises to 35% in patients who develop severe sepsis. Despite the dramatic growth in the availability and use of imaging and laboratory tests, the rapid diagnosis and early management of peritonitis remains a challenge for physicians in emergency medicine, surgery, and critical care. In this article, we review the pathophysiology of peritonitis and its potential progression to sepsis, discuss…

Endogenous peritonitis resulting from inflammation or perforation of an abdominal viscus-a result, for example, of diverticulitis, cholecystitis, or acute appendicitis-can be a complication in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), with significant morbidity and a high incidence of catheter loss. Here, we describe an end-stage renal disease patient on PD who presented with acute abdominal pain and who was diagnosed with uncomplicated PD peritonitis. His clinical course was complicated by development of eosinophilic peritonitis because of an allergy to vancomycin. Subsequently, when he fa…

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infections are endemic among cats worldwide. The majority of infections are asymptomatic or result in only mild enteric disease. However, approximately 5 % of cases develop feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a systemic disease that is a frequent cause of death in young cats. In this study, we report the complete coding genome sequences of six FCoVs: three from faecal samples from healthy cats and three from tissue lesion samples from cats with confirmed FIP. The six samples were obtained over a period of 8 weeks at a single-site cat rescue and rehoming centre in the…

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous peritonitis is one of the least common forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. In the literature, few cases in pregnancy have been previously published. Tuberculous peritonitis in pregnancy is a diagnostic challenge, especially in the absence of lung involvement. It mimics other diseases and clinical presentation is usually non-specific, which may lead to diagnostic delay and development of complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report here a new case of tuberculous peritonitis that occurred in a 31-year-old Caucasian pregnant woman at 22 weeks' gestation. She was compla…

INTRODUCTION: Acute chylous peritonitis, a rare condition, is defined as an abrupt chylous fluid accumulation in the peritoneal space in the absence of a significant underlying pathology. Diagnosis is difficult due to abrupt onset and accompanying acute abdomen signs.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: Here we presented the case of a 32-year-old female patient who underwent laparoscopy due to acute abdomen findings and was diagnosed with acute chylous peritonitis. No underlying pathologies were detected, and only irrigation and drainage were applied. She was discharged unproblematically with a low-fat die…

We report a case of acute chylous ascites formation presenting as peritonitis (acute chylous peritonitis) in a patient suffering from acute pancreatitis due to hypertriglyceridemia and alcohol abuse. The development of chylous ascites is usually a chronic process mostly involving malignancy, trauma or surgery, and symptoms arise as a result of progressive abdominal distention. However, when accumulation of "chyle" occurs rapidly, the patient may present with signs of peritonitis. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult since the clinical picture usually suggests hollow organ perforation, appendici…

Chronic constipation can lead to fecal impaction and catastrophic complication such as colonic obstruction, perforation and fecal peritonitis. A case is reported of stercoral perforation of the rectosigmoid with pneumoperitoneum and fecal peritonitis. The patient was admitted for the signs of acute abdomen with pneumoperitoneum diagnosed on native radiological imaging.

Urinary peritonitis (the uroperitoneum) is categorized as a difficult to diagnose clinical entity due to its poor manifestations. Vesical trauma following pelvis bone fracture is the most frequently involved in the uroperitoneum aetiology, followed by spontaneous vesical rupture and intraoperative iatrogenic lesions. One of the most important and constant signs that can occur is diffuse abdominal tension, without tenderness. The imagistic procedure that sets the diagnosis is retrograde cystography showing intraperitoneal urine effusion. Vesical rupture is a surgical emergency. The uroperitoneu…

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (or abdominal cocoon) is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction, especially in adult population. Diagnosis is usually incidental at laparotomy. We discuss one such rare case, outlining the fact that an intra-operative surprise diagnosis could have been facilitated by previous investigations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56 year-old man presented in A&E department with small bowel ileus. He had a history of 6 similar episodes of small bowel obstruction in the past 4 years, which resolved with conservative treatment. Pre-operative work-up did…

We present a clinical case of ileal carcinoid tumor manifested to a man about 53 years old, which was operated first time in emergency when right hemicolectomy was performed and after that reintervention for a small fistula. Finally this patient was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy in ambulatory care by oncologists. In conclusion we can say that acute appendicitis with generalized peritonitis could be one of form by manifestation of this tumor:ileal carcinoid tumor.

Long-term graft dysfunction and/or graft loss after intestinal transplantation (ITx) is a significant concern. Sclerosing peritonitis (SP) is a manifestation of chronic allograft failure and its presence may also include classic arterial obliterative arteriopathy (OA) as in chronic rejection. We describe the clinical presentation and management of SP occurring after ITx in children. Case records of 121 children undergoing ITx from 1990 to 2003 were reviewed. Three children (2.4%) presented with SP of the intestine allograft at a mean time of 6.6 yr following ITx as follows: age at Tx (yr) 8.2,…

Two primigravid immigrant women aged 20 and 24 years were diagnosed with tuberculous peritonitis. The cases showed a significant delay in diagnosis. This was probably the cause for the premature birth and death of one foetus. The other child was diagnosed with congenital tuberculosis several months after birth and was successfully treated. The women were treated with the usual combination ofisoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and pyrazinamide. The unfamiliarity with this clinical picture is a problem in countries with a low incidence of tuberculosis. In both cases the final diagnosis was made by…

Primary peritoneal tuberculosis is a rare presentation of this disease. It is usually associated with ascites and raised CA-125 levels. Occasionally a pelvic mass may be present making the preoperative differential diagnosis from advanced ovarian cancer extremely difficult. Acid-fast stains and special cultures of the ascitic fluid for Mycobacterium tuberculosis are frequently negative, and confirmation of the diagnosis commonly requires histologic examination of biopsy specimens, in which epithelioid granulomas with central caseous necrosis can be identified. We present a case of unexplained

Brucella infection is a systemic disease, but the microorganism rarely causes infections in the gastrointestinal system such as hepatitis, cholecystitis, colitis and pancreatitis. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis due to Brucella is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of cirrhosis complicated with nongranulomatous hepatitis and peritonitis, both due to Brucella. A 63 year-old man with diabetes mellitus was admitted to hospital with complaints of weakness, backache, abdominal pain and abdominal swelling. On the basis of physical examination and laboratory findings, cryptogenic cirrhosis an…

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of a 42-year-old patient referred for exploration of a tumor of the right flank and evidence of inflammation.
MATERIAL: and methods. Ultrasonography and computed tomography showed a liver mass associated with a heterogeneous adnexal mass. Serum CA-125 was elevated and ovarian cancer with liver metastasis was suspected. An alternative diagnosis was salpingitis complicated by Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome in this patient wearing an intra-uterine contraceptive device.
RESULTS: Exploratory laparoscopy was performed and confirmed the diagnosis of salpingitis complicated
