This study was conducted to evaluate the capability of ultrasonography to visualize extremity nerves. Fifty healthy women and men and 10 patients suffering with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) were examined. The radial nerve lateral to the humerus, ulnar nerve distal to the cubital tunnel, median nerve in the middle of the forearm and proximal to the palmar crease, sciatic nerve in the middle of the thigh and tibial and common peroneal nerves just distal to their bifurcation, were investigated, employing a 7.5-MHz electronic linear-array transducer. In healthy subjects, the medi

INTRODUCTION: Common peroneal nerve palsy, termed "slimmer's palsy," is a recognized complication of rapid weight loss. This case series describes 2 patients who developed foot drop following tirzepatide-induced weight loss precipitated by habitual leg crossing.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: Peroneal neuropathy secondary to compression from habitual leg crossing developed in 2 male patients during tirzepatide therapy for weight loss. Patient 1 was a 55-year-old with severe hidradenitis suppurativa on multiple immunosuppressive medications who started on tirzepatide and lost 50 pounds over 5 months. Pat

Dying-back neuropathies result in sensory loss and motor signs in the distal distribution of the longest nerves of the body. It would be expected, therefore, that taller individuals with dying-back neuropathies would tend to have worse nerve damage than shorter individuals. This hypothesis was tested in patients receiving high dose paclitaxel. Nerve conductions and quantitative sensory tests were obtained in 21 breast cancer subjects, prior to and 20-40 days after 725 mg/m(2) paclitaxel administered intravenously over 24 h. Despite the uniform dose of paclitaxel, there was a wide variation in

Sarcopenia and frailty are common in liver transplant candidates and often deteriorate early posttransplantation, negatively affecting recovery and survival. Since 5 years, we refer liver transplant recipients who, despite being medically stable, are considered unfit for safe discharge home because of physical, social, or functional limitations for continued care at an independent rehabilitation hospital. This retrospective observational study evaluated safety and functional outcomes of this rehabilitation program and explored clinical characteristics associated with referral. We reviewed all

Recently published studies show that the prevalence of polyneuropathy (PNP) is higher in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) than in age-matched controls. Its pathogenesis, however is a matter of controversy. The major hypothesis is the toxicity of high concentrations of homocysteine (Hcy) possibly related to levodopa (LD) therapy. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of PNP, independent of other etiologies, and to determine the relationship to demographic and clinical factors in LD-treated Parkinson's patients. A total of 102 patients (51 patients with PD and 51 sex

Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of experimental diabetic neuropathy, but prospective studies in diabetic patients are lacking. We aimed to evaluate whether the plasma levels of various biomarkers of oxidative stress predict the progression of diabetic neuropathy and mortality over 6 years. We followed 89 diabetic patients aged 54 ± 14 years (59 % with polyneuropathy), 72 of whom underwent nerve function reassessment after 6.2 ± 0.8 years, whereas 17 died after 4.2 ± 1.0 years. Plasma markers of oxidative stress at baseline included superoxide anion, hypochlorous acid, peroxy

This study evaluated the possible existence of subclinical sensory nerve defects in residents of blackfoot disease (BFD)-hyperendemic villages in Taiwan characterized by long-term arsenic exposure from drinking water. Eighty-five seemingly normal subjects living in BFD villages and 75 external normal controls without exposure were recruited. All subjects were 30-75 years old, without possible causes of peripheral neuropathy and suffered from no symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Current perception threshold (CPT) was measured by Neurometer at the trigeminal, median and superficial peroneal ner

Peripheral neuropathy, which accompanies aging, occurs during the long-term rearing of laboratory animals. The present study set out to delineate the clinical and functional features of this neuropathy. A total of 200 B6C3F1 female mice, in groups of 5 to 20 mice, were sacrificed and autopsied each week beginning at 5 weeks and continuing to 130 weeks of age. Examination for histopathologic changes was conducted on the dorsal nerve roots, sciatic nerves, peroneal nerves, tibial nerves, plantar nerves and brachial nerve plexuses. At 90 weeks of age or later, peripheral neuropathy, characterized

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease comprises a heterogeneous group of neurologic disorders that shape peripheral motor and sensory neuropathy. A classification of these disorders was proposed in 1975, defining seven types of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy. Clinical features of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type VI are muscle weakness and atrophy in leg and hand muscles, leading to progressive disability and loss of vision and progressing to blindness due to optic atrophy. Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type VI was first reported in 1879 by Vizioli, who described a kinship

The term "foot drop" is defined as the loss of active dorsiflexion at the tibiotalar joint. Surgical procedures such as tendon transfer may be considered in patients who have had foot drop for more than a year. The most commonly reported tendon transfer in the treatment of drop foot is the tibialis posterior tendon. In cases where the tibialis posterior tendon is non-functional, transfer of one of the non-standard tendons such as FHL tendon to the dorsum of the foot is performed. In the presented case, the surgical technique of endoscopic transfer of the FHL tendon was illustrated. The patient

Common peroneal nerve palsy is often caused by compression at the fibular head, with ganglion cysts being the most common etiology. Although rare, meniscal cysts can also compress the nerve. We report a case of common peroneal nerve palsy due to a lateral meniscal cyst, successfully treated with surgery. A 38-year-old man presented with progressive pain and numbness in the right lateral knee and foot, along with difficulty dorsiflexing the ankle without any apparent history of trauma. Examination revealed a palpable mass on the lateral knee and sensory deficits in the superficial peroneal nerv

Foot drop is a common clinical condition which may substantially impact physical function and health-related quality of life. The etiologies of foot drop are diverse and a detailed history and physical examination are essential in understanding the underlying pathophysiology and capacity for spontaneous recovery. Patients presenting with acute foot drop or those without significant spontaneous recovery of motor deficits may be candidates for surgical intervention. The timing, mechanism, and severity of neural injury resulting in foot drop influence the selection of the most appropriate periphe

Sciatica due to a lumbar disc herniation is a frequent symptom, between 13% and 40% of the general population will experience an episode of sciatica during their lives. Different techniques exist to treat this condition. Among them the percutaneous intradiscal Discogel®. In all the series of patients reviewed treated with Discogel®, so far, there is not any case reported with disc extrusion and significant neurological damage. We present a case of a foot drop, caused by a disc herniation after percutaneous treatment with Discogel®. We hypothesize that the pathogenic mechanism would be the incr

Schwannoma, also known as neurilemmoma or Schwann cell tumor, is one of the most common neoplasms of the nerve sheath which usually appears at the head, neck, or upper extremity. Schwannoma occurrence in the lower extremity originating from the common peroneal nerve is rarely reported according to literary findings. We report a case of a 32-year-old man who presented with a 6-month history of a growing lump in the left knee. MRT revealed a well-defined 9.6 cm × 7.8 cm × 6.5 cm multilobular mass of heterogeneous consistency with areas of necroses with a likely diagnosis of synovial sarcoma. Aft
