Personality and gambling involvement: a person-centered approach.

Individual differences in personality are likely to play an important role in explaining the propensity to gamble. One of the potential roadblocks to elucidating the relation between personality and gambling may be inadequately accounting for the diversity of gambling activities. The goal of the present study was to provide a comprehensive and nuanced portrait of the relation between personality and gambling by taking a multivariate approach to the co-use of multiple gambling activities and employing a broad inventory of potentially relevant personality dimensions. Participants were 4,669 indi…

[Diagnosis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy for personality disordered persons].

The author uses PubMed searches on clinical studies on personality disorders and finds that the borderline personality disorder is most extensively researched. Mary Zanarini summeries there are four kinds of psychotherapies that are proved to be effective in the treatment of BPD patients, including mentalization based treatment, transference focused therapy, dialectic behavior therapy and schema focused therapy. They are all effective to improve the severity of impulsivity and self-destructiveness. The author then reviews McGlashan's series of extensive follow-up studies on BPD and other menta…

Personality and health: Disentangling their between-person and within-person relationship in three longitudinal studies.

Personality traits and physical health both change over the life span. Theoretical models and empirical evidence suggest that these changes are related. The current study investigated the dynamic relations between personality traits and physical health at both the between-person and the within-person levels. Data were drawn from three longitudinal studies: the Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study (NAS; N = 1,734), the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences (LISS; N = 13,559), and the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA, N = 2,209). Using random intercept cross-lagged p…

Applying Personality Assessment Inventory Borderline Scales and Alternative Model for Personality Disorder Borderline Facets in Two Clinical Samples.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) assesses personality pathology as a combination of impairment (Criterion A) and problematic personality traits (Criterion B). The current study explores the ability of the traditional Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) Borderline scales combined with new PAI-derived AMPD borderline personality disorder (BPD) facets in predicting DSM BPD criteria. The DSM BPD criteria were identified by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders (…

Clinician-Reported Mentalizing Across Self-Reported Personality Pathology Clusters: An Investigation Using the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders.

This exploratory study aimed to examine the relationship between therapist-reported mentalizing capacity and self-reported personality pathology, specifically identifying distinct clusters based on self-reported dimensional personality pathology and evaluating differences in therapist-reported mentalizing across these clusters. Ninety treatment-seeking clients (67 women; Mage = 30.79) and their 22 therapists participated. Clients completed the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 and the Self and Interpersonal Functioning Scale. Therapists rated clients’ mentalizing capacities using the Mentalizati…

Problematic internet use and borderline personality features: A systematic review informed by the alternative model of personality disorders.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Associations between problematic internet use (PIU) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) have been reported, but the literature is highly heterogeneous, with some studies assessing overall BPD severity and others examining individual traits (e.g., emotional lability, impulsivity, dissociation). This review synthesizes these approaches using the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD), examining how BPD-relevant pathological personality traits (Criterion B) and impairments in self and interpersonal functioning (Criterion A) relate to PIU. METHODS: Following …

A Gamified Assessment Tool for Antisocial Personality Traits (Antisocial Personality Traits Evidence-Centered Design Gamified): Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The traditional self-report instruments (eg, scales) used to measure antisocial personality traits are characterized by social desirability bias and fail to capture multidimensional behaviors (eg, manipulation and deception). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate an evidence-based design for a gamified assessment tool (Antisocial Personality Traits Evidence-Centered Design Gamified assessment tool; ASP-ECD-G) to measure 7 antisocial personality traits (manipulative, callous, deceptive, hostile, risk taking, impulsive, and irresponsible) as defined in the Diagnostic a…

Longitudinal description and prediction of physical inactivity among patients with borderline personality disorder and personality-disordered comparison subjects.

BACKGROUND: The physical and psychological benefits of physical activity are well-known, and physical activity has been proven to be a helpful adjunct to psychotherapeutic treatment for many symptomatic disorders, including mood and anxiety disorders. The current study explores physical inactivity levels in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The first aim of this study is to describe the 12-year course of physical inactivity in patients with BPD. The second aim is to examine predictors of physical inactivity, including adversity experiences, comorbid symptomatic (formerly axi…

Compatibility of Linehan's biosocial theory and the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders for borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by affective, interpersonal, and identity instability, as well as marked impulsivity. There is evidence that BPD may be best operationalized dimensionally using models such as the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) described in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM). Moreover, biosocial theory is a well-known etiological theory of BPD emphasizing emotion dysregulation, inherited impulsivity, and development within invalidating contexts as key etiological mechanisms. Given that curren…

Breakdown or Personality Disorder? Psychiatric Characterization and Developmental Pathways Towards Young Adulthood in Adolescents with Pathological Personality Structure.

Background/Objectives: Research is lacking about the development of personality disorders (PDs) from adolescence to early adulthood. This study aimed to characterize the profile of high-risk adolescents compared to adolescents with full-blown PDs and adolescents with other psychiatric disorders and to identify clinical markers that constitute a risk profile. Methods: We evaluated 99 adolescents (12-17 years old) through DSM-5-based semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, cognitive tasks, and scales regarding functioning and disorder severity. We divided patients into three groups: 22 adole…

Bringing personality disorder in from the cold: Why personality disorder is a fundamental concern for youth mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Personality disorder (PD) has its peak incidence between puberty and young adulthood. By any measure, it is among the most severe mental health problems occurring in young people, uniquely predicting debilitating current problems and acting as a 'gateway' to diverse and serious future problems. Yet, PD still struggles for legitimacy and parity of access to services, including early intervention. CONCLUSION: Addressing PD is fundamental to youth mental health, and early intervention for PD has reached 'proof of concept'. Yet, reform is hindered by bigotry and sectarianism. Successfu…

Personality pathology in adolescence: relationship quality with parents and peers as predictors of the level of personality functioning.

BACKGROUND: The dimensional approach to personality pathology opens up the possibility to investigate adolescence as a significant period for the development of personality pathology. Recent evidence suggests that symptoms of personality pathology may change during adolescence, but the negative consequences such as impaired social functioning persist later on in life. Thus, we think that problems in social functioning may further predict personality impairments. The current study aimed at investigating the role of relationship quality with parents and peers for the prediction of the level of p…

Pathological personality traits of maladaptive daydreamers measured by the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 in a psychiatric sample.

This study aimed to estimate the frequency of maladaptive daydreaming and to explore the pathological personality traits of probable maladaptive daydreamers. Our sample consisted of 239 psychiatric patients. After screening, 42 persons were probable maladaptive, while 197 participants prove to be normal daydreamers. Two pathological domains and three facets measured by the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 showed a moderate significant correlation with the Maladaptive Daydreaming Scale. The score of nearly every domain and facet was slightly higher among probable maladaptive daydreamers. To quan…

The 24-year course of major depression in patients with borderline personality disorder and personality-disordered comparison subjects.

BACKGROUND: This study had two main objectives. The first was to detail the prevalence of major depressive disorder over 24 years of follow-up for both patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and comparison subjects with other personality disorders (OPD). The second was to determine time-to-remission, recurrence, and new onset of major depression among these two groups of patients. METHODS: The SCID-I was administered to 290 borderline inpatients and 72 personality-disordered comparison subjects during their index admission. It was also re-administered at 12 contiguous two-year fo…

A Twin Study of Normative Personality and DSM-IV Personality Disorder Criterion Counts: Evidence for Separate Genetic Influences.

OBJECTIVE: Both normative personality and DSM-IV personality disorders have been found to be heritable. However, there is limited knowledge about the extent to which the genetic and environmental influences underlying DSM personality disorders are shared with those of normative personality. The aims of this study were to assess the phenotypic similarity between normative and pathological personality and to investigate the extent to which genetic and environmental influences underlying individual differences in normative personality account for symptom variance across DSM-IV personality disorde…

Levels of personality functioning and their association with clinical features and interpersonal functioning in patients with personality disorders.

Recently, the DSM-5 Personality and Personality Disorders Work Group has proposed a multiple level approach toward the classification and diagnosis of personality disorders (PDs), with the first level entailing a rating of impairments in levels of personality functioning. Although a number of measures that assess levels of personality functioning have been validated, given its prominent status in the DSM-5 proposal and contemporary theories of personality pathology, the Work Group has called for more research in this area (e.g., Bender, Morey, & Skodol, 2011). In response to this call, this st…

Personality assessment based on the five-factor model of personality structure in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Several characteristic personality types have been reported for glaucoma patients in previous studies. However, none of the previous studies used a common structural theory of personality. In this study, we conducted a multicenter cross-sectional case-control study using the recently established five-factor model of personality structure. METHODS: Personality was evaluated using the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), which is a questionnaire specifically designed to test the five-factor model of personality: neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), openness …

The relationship among three models of personality psychopathology: DSM-III-R personality disorder, TCI scores and DSQ defences.

BACKGROUND: Current systems of describing personality pathology have significant shortcomings. A polydiagnostic approach is used to study the relationship between psychological, psychoanalytical and psychopathological models of personality. METHODS: The subjects were 256 patients enrolled in treatment studies of major depression and bulimia nervosa. Subjects were assessed using the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ) and the Structured Clinical Interview for DMS-III-R personality disorders (SCID-II). RESULTS: Subjects had high rates of DSM-III-R p…

[Three nursing practices in borderline personality disorder].

Psychotherapy, the standard treatment for borderline personality disorder, is often difficult to access, and its application in the field is hampered by neurocognitive and psychosocial impairments. This lack of care contributes to the psychosocial stagnation of vulnerable individuals, which is costly for society, particularly in terms of repeated visits to emergency rooms and prolonged hospitalizations. This context also leads to professional burnout and harmful stigmatization. Follow-up care aims to limit these episodes by anticipating emergency situations and gradually reintegrating patients…
