Cluster B personality traits often co-occur with psychopathic traits. However, few investigations have been conducted to understand the high co-occurrence of antisocial (ASPD), borderline (BPD), narcissistic (NPD), and histrionic (HPD) personality disorder traits and psychopathy. The triarchic model of psychopathy is a framework that focuses on dispositional constructs (meanness, boldness, and disinhibition) with neurobiological and developmental correlates that may be particularly useful in elucidating the overlap between Cluster B personality traits and psychopathy. This study investigated h

A previous investigation gave no evidence of a significant relationship of patterns of adaptation to conflict, as measured with the Serial Color-Word Test, with the Schizoid Personality Scale of the Coolidge Axis II Inventory. As a new scoring algorithm has subsequently been proposed for the latter scale, a replication was done with the modified schizoid scale. A group of 75 consecutive nonpsychotic women outpatients was given the Serial Color-Word Test and Coolidge's inventory. Both multiple and logistic regressions selected two significant predictors of schizoid personality, corresponding to

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, disturbances in cognitive and emotional functioning. Cognitive impairment (so-called "fibrofog") is increasingly recognized as a central feature of fibromyalgia. However, its relationship with psychological traits and personality dimensions remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to examine the interaction between cognitive performance, emotional states, and personality traits in individuals diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
METHODS: This descriptive pilot study involved 10 female outpatients diagnosed

In a study of nine Klinefelter syndrome patients obtained from a military population, all were found to have normal electroencephalograms (EEGs), all were clinically euthyroid, and had normal thyroid function test results. All had normal verbal and nonverbal IQs and no evidence of neurologic dysfunction on psychological testing. There was a high incidence of personality maladjustment as indicated by both the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality inventory and individual psychiatric evaluation. No particular personality pattern appeared typical for the group as a whole. Neurologic dysfunction, as m…

The degree to which schizoid and avoidant personality styles represent unique variants of interpersonal detachment remains controversial. This study contrasted core traits associated with schizoid versus avoidant personalities in a mixed-sex sample of 221 community adults, using the five traits that comprise the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). The International Personality Disorders Examination Screening Questionnaire was used to assess schizoid and avoidant personality traits; the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 was used to assess negative affectivity, detachment, antagoni…

This study looks at "bright-side," Big Five Personality trait correlates of a "dark-side" Personality Disorder, namely Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD). More than 5000 British adults completed the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Personality Inventory-Revised (Costa & McCrae, 1985), which measures the Big Five Personality factors at the Domain (Super Factor) and the Facet (Factor) level, as well as the Hogan Development Survey (HDS; Hogan & Hogan, 2009), which has a measure of HPD, exclusively called "Colourful" in the HDS terminology. Correlation and regression results confirmed many of…

BACKGROUND: Despite its poor prognosis, the psychological factors associated with recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis are poorly understood. In people with type 1 diabetes, we assessed for psychopathology in those with and without recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
METHOD: The design was a case-control study. Cases were defined as people with two or more DKA episodes in a 12-month period (recurrent DKA). Cases and controls were matched for gender and age. We compared groups for scores on Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck's Depression Inventory II, Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale (DE

BACKGROUND: Type D (distressed) personality, defined by negative affectivity and social inhibition, is related to cardiovascular outcomes. Little is known about Type D in non-Western cultures. We examined the validity of this construct and its assessment in Taiwanese patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and adults from the general population.
METHODS: CAD patients (N = 87) and adults from the general population (N = 421) completed the 14-item Type D Scale- Taiwanese version (DS14-T), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Chinese Hostility Inventory Short-Form

The literature on cross-dressing men has been primarily limited to self-identified patients at psychiatric clinics who are in distress. To understand the personality trait characteristics and sexual functioning of nonpatient cross-dressers, 188 non-treatment-seeking male cross-dressers completed the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI) and the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory (DSFI). Respondents were classified as transvestites (TV; N = 83), transgenderists (TG; N = 61), or transsexuals (TS; N = 44) based on self-report and the nature of their cross-gender activities (e.g., use of female h…

Studies on the relationship between personality and depressive disorders (DD) or substance use disorders (SUD) often refer to the normal personality model and focus mainly on the "big" factors. Domain level results with the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) tend to be consistent with NEO-PI-R or NEO-FFI results, however facet level results in the specific characteristics of these disorders are scarce. The main objective of this study was to characterize DD and SUD's maladaptive personality traits through the PID-5. A sample of DD was compared with a sample of SUD, with a sample of other …

We administered the Revised Neo Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) to 92 Japanese patients with focal dystonia and analyzed the relation of their personality traits, affected body parts, and occupations using a decision tree method. Results show that participants' personality traits were related to their occupation rather than the body part. Occupational dystonia patients including musicians exhibited neurotic tendencies and a high level of anxiety. Moreover, patients with occupational upper limb dystonia had realistic thinking patterns. Patients with musicians' dystonia were open about their em…

Neurotic and expressive hostility from the perspective of the five-factor model of personality. Sixty-five male and 105 female students (mean age = 25.0 years) at a public university completed the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, the revised NEO Personality Inventory, and measures of stress and depression. Correlations were computed between the hostility measures and all personality domains and facets. Profiles of participants classified into neurotic and expressive hostility groups were also produced using T scores based on normative samples. The results suggest that neurotically hostile indi…
