The impact of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in charge-ordered systems.

We study the impact of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) on the stability of charge-density wave (CDW) in systems with large electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Here, the EPC is considered in the framework of the Holstein model at the half-filled square lattice. We obtain the phase diagram of the Rashba-Holstein model using the Hartree-Fock mean-field theory, and identify the boundaries of the CDW and Rashba metal phases. We notice that the RSOC disfavors the CDW phase, driving the system to a correlated Rashba metal. Also, we employ a cluster perturbation theory (CPT) approach to investigate

Spin Dynamics in Hybrid Halide Perovskites - Effect of Dynamical and Permanent Symmetry Breaking.

The hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite (HOIP), for example, MAPbBr3, exhibits extended spin lifetime and apparent spin lifetime anisotropy in experiments. The underlying mechanisms of these phenomena remain illusive. By utilizing our first-principles density-matrix dynamics approach with quantum scatterings including electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions and self-consistent spin-orbit coupling, we present temperature- and magnetic field-dependent spin lifetimes in hybrid perovskites, in agreement with experimental observations. For centrosymmetric hybrid perovskite MAPbBr3

Phase diagram simulations incorporating the gap anisotropy with AFM spin and charge density wave under spin-orbital coupling in Fe-based superconductors.

For over a decade, iron-based superconductors (IBSCs) have been the subject of intense scientific research, yet the underlying principle of their pairing mechanism remains elusive. To address this, we have developed a simulation tool that reasonably predicts the regional superconducting phase diagrams of key IBSCs, incorporating factors such as anisotropic superconducting gap, spin-orbital coupling, electron-phonon coupling, antiferromagnetism, spin density wave, and charge transfer. Our focus has been on bulk FeSe, LiFeAs, NaFeAs, and FeSe films on SrTiO3 substrates. By incorporating angle-re

Cr2XTe4(X = Si, Ge) monolayers: a new type of two-dimensional high-TCIsing ferromagnetic semiconductors with a large magnetic anisotropy.

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) provides the ideal platform for the development of quantum information technology in nanoscale devices. However, most of them suffer from low Curie temperature and small magnetic anisotropic energy (MAE), severely limiting their practical application. In this work, by using first-principles calculations, we predicted two stable 2D materials, namely, Cr2SiTe4and Cr2GeTe4monolayers. Interestingly, both of them are intrinsic direct band gap FMSs (∼1 eV) with a large magnetization (8µBf.u.-1) and sizable MAE (∼500μeV Cr-1). Monte Carlo simulat

Hidden Local Symmetry Breaking in Silver Diamondoid Compounds is Root Cause of Ultralow Thermal Conductivity.

Typically, conventional structure transitions occur from a low symmetry state to a higher symmetry state upon warming. In this work, an unexpected local symmetry breaking in the tetragonal diamondoid compound AgGaTe2 is reported, which, upon warming, evolves continuously from an undistorted ground state to a locally distorted state while retaining average crystallographic symmetry. This is a rare phenomenon previously referred to as emphanisis. This distorted state, caused by the weak sd3 orbital hybridization of tetrahedral Ag atoms, causes their displacement off the tetrahedron center and pr

Vibrational spectral fingerprinting for chemical recognition of biominerals.

Pathologies associated with calcified tissue, such as osteoporosis, demand in vivo and/or in situ spectroscopic analysis to assess the role of chemical substitutions in the inorganic component. High energy X-ray or NMR spectroscopies are impractical or damaging in biomedical conditions. Low energy spectroscopies, such as IR and Raman techniques, are often the best alternative. In apatite biominerals, the vibrational signatures of the phosphate group are generally used as fingerprint of the materials although they provide only limited information. Here, we have used first principles calculation

Superconductivity of novel tin hydrides (Sn(n)H(m)) under pressure.

With the motivation of discovering high-temperature superconductors, evolutionary algorithm USPEX is employed to search for all stable compounds in the Sn-H system. In addition to the traditional SnH4, new hydrides SnH8, SnH12 and SnH14 are found to be thermodynamically stable at high pressure. Dynamical stability and superconductivity of tin hydrides are systematically investigated. I4m2-SnH8, C2/m-SnH12 and C2/m-SnH14 exhibit higher superconducting transition temperatures of 81, 93 and 97 K compared to the traditional compound SnH4 with Tc of 52 K at 200 GPa. An interesting bent H3-group in

From clusters to semiconductor nanostructures.

In the last two decades there has been tremendous interest in various aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Now the subject has matured into an important field in the general area of science and technology that has been identified as one of the thrust areas. Nanoscience and nanotechnology is really an interdisciplinary and/or multidisciplinary subject. This review describes work on transition metal molecular level clusters. The clusters were fabricated by making very dilute solutions and also by doping them in lattices of alkali halides and alkali cyanides. Size dependence of the bandgap

Raman studies of semiconducting oxide nanobelts.

Crystalline nanobelts of ZnO and SnO2 were prepared from a thermal evaporation of oxide powders inside an alumina tube in the absence of catalysts. Typical dimensions of the nanobelt samples ranged from approximately 10 to 100 microns in length, 30 to 300 nm in width, and 6 to 30 nm in thickness. Room temperature Raman spectra were obtained on pressed mats of nanobelt samples and compared with the corresponding spectra of the starting oxide powders and bulk materials. Collectively, our Raman data indicated that the as-prepared nanobelt samples used in this study were oxygen deficient. Upon ann

Ultrabroadband Spacetime Nanoscopy of Terahertz Polaritons in a van der Waals Cavity.

Guiding, storing, and processing light at the nanoscale hinges on understanding how polaritons - hybrid quasiparticles of light and matter - propagate and interfere in both space and time. This work introduces a synchrotron-based technique, SYnchrotron SpaceTimE Mapping (SYSTEM), which captures real-time evolution of polariton wave packets with ∼10 nm spatial and sub-100 fs temporal resolution across an ultrabroadband 5-50 THz range. Here, SYSTEM directly visualizes the creation, interference, and decay of multiple high-quality Fabry-Pérot phonon polariton cavity modes in an α-MoO3 microcavity

Microscopic Mechanisms of Exciton Polariton Relaxation in Monolayer WS2 Microcavities.

Exciton polaritons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) microcavities have garnered significant interest due to their strong spin-orbit coupling, large exciton binding energy, van der Waals heterointegration, and room-temperature stability. These properties make TMD microcavities a powerful platform for valleytronics, topological photonics, and ultrafast optoelectronics. A key factor in harnessing their potential is understanding the relaxation process, which governs condensation, transport, and nonlinear interactions. Here, we investigate the microscopic natures of these energy relaxation

Controlling the fate of two triplet states: solid-state annihilator design for photon upconversion.

Photon upconversion, the process of converting low-energy light into higher-energy photons, offers transformative opportunities for energy conversion and optoelectronics. In this Perspective, we examine the molecular design principles of solid-state annihilators, emphasizing a unified excitonic framework that links upconversion with related technologies such as organic light-emitting diodes and singlet fission. We discuss key challenges, including controlling triplet exciton diffusion, maximizing singlet formation efficiency, and suppressing loss channels such as excimer and trap-state formati

Electrically programmable polariton symmetry breaking via non-Hermitian dissipation engineering.

The optical response of natural materials is constrained by crystal symmetry, limiting the design of reconfigurable nanophotonic devices. Here we demonstrate the electrically programmable symmetry breaking of phonon polaritons via non-Hermitian dissipation engineering. In a heterostructure composed of α-MoO3 and aligned carbon nanotubes (A-CNTs), we identify the A-CNT layer as an anisotropic dissipative medium. Driven by overdamped carrier dynamics, the nanotubes preclude polariton hybridization, exerting a proximity-induced resistive coupling instead. Thus, the A-CNT layer operates as a tunab

Theories of Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity: A Pedagogical Overview.

The chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect refers to electron transport through chiral (often organic) molecules becoming spin-polarized, without external magnetic fields. While widely observed experimentally, a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the CISS effect remains to be developed. This review provides an accessible perspective on the effect and a summary of emerging CISS theories. We begin with fundamental concepts involving spin-orbit coupling, symmetries, and quantum transport. Then, we review key theoretical approaches, including scattering-based, tight-binding, vibrati

Counterintuitive Temperature-Dependent Interfacial Thermal Resistance in Twisted van der Waals Interfaces.

Precise control of interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) is essential for thermal management in van der Waals (vdW) devices. Here, we report a counterintuitive temperature-dependent reversal of ITR in twisted PtX2 (X = S, Se, Te) interfaces. At near-commensurate small twist angles, elevated temperatures enhance anharmonic scattering, suppressing direct phonon transmission and dramatically increasing ITR. In contrast, at incommensurate large twist angles, heat transport paradoxically improves because direct transmission is inherently limited by structural mismatch, allowing thermally activated i

Confined Assembly of Polymer Nanowires for High-Performance Organic Thermoelectrics.

Polymeric thermoelectrics provide a lightweight and intrinsically flexible platform for converting ubiquitous low-grade waste heat into sustainable electricity. However, their practical deployment has been hindered by a low dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) and the reliance on high performance on complex processing routes. Here, we introduce a simple and controllable solvent-assisted soft lithography approach for fabricating polymeric nanowires with exceptional thermoelectric performance. 1D confinement drives ordered chain assembly, boosting charge mobility (µ), while enhanced phonon-boundar

Phase-dependent excitonic light harvesting and photovoltaic limits in monolayer Y2TeO2 MOene polymorphs.

We investigate phase-dependent electronic and excitonic phenomena in monolayer Y2TeO2 MOenes in the 1T and 2H polymorphs using first-principles theory and an effective many-body framework. Phonon spectra and elastic stability criteria establish both phases as dynamically and mechanically stable. Quasiparticle band structures reveal direct gaps in the near-infrared to visible range, with gap values increasing systematically from semilocal to hybrid exchange treatments. Optical spectra computed using a tight-binding Bethe-Salpeter approach demonstrate pronounced excitonic resonances arising from

2D Janus AlSXY (X, Y = Cl, Br, I; X ≠ Y) monolayers with significant piezoelectric and high-temperature thermoelectric properties.

Based on first-principles calculations, the new tetragonal Janus AlSXY monolayers (X,Y = Cl, Br, I; X ≠ Y) are predicted, and the electronic structure, thermoelectric (TE) and piezoelectric properties are also explored. It is found that the system exhibits high electrical conductivity and excellent power factor due to the high carrier mobility in theY-axis direction under n-doping. Notably, the high Grüneisen parameters and low the phonon velocity lead to ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (1.35 W mK-1for AlSClBr, 1.07 W mK-1for AlSClI, and 1.06 W mK-1for AlSBrI). At 700 K, the optimal TE f

Magneto-optical Effect of Dark State in 0D Metal Halides through HT/FC Vibrational Coupling.

Dark excitonic states play a pivotal role in controlling the radiative dynamics of low-dimensional luminescent materials. In this work, we investigate dark states of an emerging zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide that diverge markedly from traditional inorganic and organic semiconductors. Our studies reveal that when the dark states dominate the emission, the 0D material exhibits an anomalous giant magneto-blueshift of approximately 9 meV at 7 T. Spectroscopic analysis indicates that the magnetic field modulates the dark state decay pathways, thereby inducing a crossov

Ultrahigh Hole Mobility in Monolayer WSe2 Enabled by Spin-Orbit Suppression of Intervalley Scattering.

Monolayer WSe2 has recently emerged as a leading candidate for ultrascaled p-channel transistors, with record room-temperature hole mobilities exceeding 1000 cm2/(V s). Here, we reveal the microscopic origin of this exceptional performance using state-of-the-art ab initio Boltzmann transport calculations, incorporating GW quasiparticle corrections and long-range dipole and quadrupole corrections for two-dimensional materials. We obtained a phonon-limited hole mobility of 931 cm2/(V s) at room temperature, in excellent agreement with experiments. We find that this exceptionally high mobility re
