Human urine: A novel source of phosphorus for vivianite production.

Human urine contributes up to 50 % of the phosphorus load in domestic wastewater. Decentralized sanitation systems that separately collect urine provide an opportunity to recover this phosphorus. In this study, we leveraged the unique and complex chemistry of urine in favor of recovering phosphorus as vivianite. We found that the type of urine affected the yield and purity of vivianite, but the kind of iron salt used, and reaction temperature, did not affect the yield and purity. Ultimately, it was the urine pH that affected the solubility of vivianite and other co-precipitates, with the highe…

Plasmapheresis in lethal yellow phosphorus poisoning: a scope for recovery.

A 16-year-old girl presented with grade 3 hepatic encephalopathy (HE) following suicide attempt after consuming a lethal dose of yellow phosphorus containing rodenticide. Although she was a candidate for liver transplantation, it could not be done. In the absence of a specific antidote for yellow phosphorus poisoning, the patient was managed conservatively. In addition, low volume-therapeutic plasma exchange (LV-TPE) was initiated, which resulted in a dramatic improvement in HE. Although liver transplantation is the definitive treatment, this case has shown that TPE has a promising role as a '…

The Molecular Basis of Calcium and Phosphorus Inherited Metabolic Disorders.

Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorus (P) hold a leading part in many skeletal and extra-skeletal biological processes. Their tight normal range in serum mirrors their critical role in human well-being. The signalling "voyage" starts at Calcium Sensing Receptor (CaSR) localized on the surface of the parathyroid glands, which captures the "oscillations" of extracellular ionized Ca and transfers the signal downstream. Parathyroid hormone (PTH), Vitamin D, Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF23) and other receptors or ion-transporters, work synergistically and establish a highly regulated signalling circuit betwe…

Organic phosphorus affects the retention of arsenite and arsenate by goethite.

The hazardous effects of arsenic are closely linked to its speciation and interaction with different soil minerals, which influence both As mobility and bioavailability. Adsorption onto iron (oxyhydr)oxides is one of the main processes controlling the partitioning of arsenite [As(III)] and arsenate [As(V)] between aqueous and solid phases. Arsenic retention can be affected by changes in soil pH and the presence of competing anions, like phosphate. Although competition with inorganic phosphorus (P) for sorption sites on mineral surfaces has been widely studied, little is known about the interac…

Trivalent Phosphorus and Phosphines as Components of Biochemistry in Anoxic Environments.

Phosphorus is an essential element for all life on Earth, yet trivalent phosphorus (e.g., in phosphines) appears to be almost completely absent from biology. Instead phosphorus is utilized by life almost exclusively as phosphate, apart from a small contingent of other pentavalent phosphorus compounds containing structurally similar chemical groups. In this work, we address four previously stated arguments as to why life does not explore trivalent phosphorus: (1) precedent (lack of confirmed instances of trivalent phosphorus in biochemicals suggests that life does not have the means to exploit …

Facile storage and release of white phosphorus and yellow arsenic.

The storage of metastable compounds and modifications of elements are of great interest for synthesis and other, e.g., semiconductor, applications. Whereas white phosphorus is a metastable modification that can be stored under certain conditions, storage of the extremely (light- and air-)sensitive form of arsenic, yellow arsenic, is a challenge rarely tackled so far. Herein, we report on the facile storage and release of these tetrahedral E4 molecules (E = P, As) using activated carbon as a porous storage material. These loaded materials are air- and light-stable and have been comprehensively …

The Structure and Properties of Magnesium-Phosphorus Compounds Under Pressure.

Inspired by the emergence of compounds with novel structures and unique properties (i.e., superconductivity and hardness) under high pressure, we systematically explored a binary Mg-P system under pressure, combining first-principles calculations with structure prediction. Several stoichiometries (Mg3 P, Mg2 P, MgP, MgP2 , and MgP3 ) were predicted to be stable under pressure. Especially, the P-P bonding patterns are different in the P-rich compounds and the Mg-rich compounds: in the former, the P-P bonding patterns form P2 , P3 , quadrilateral units, P-P⋅⋅⋅P chains or disordered "graphene-lik

Recent progress in the synthesis of phosphorus-containing indole derivatives.

Phosphorus-containing indole derivatives represent a special class of phosphorus-containing nitrogen heterocycles, which not only widely exist in pharmaceutical agents, but also have widespread applications in materials science and organic synthesis as ligands and intermediates. The synthesis of such compounds is of current interest, with two major synthetic strategies being established. This review summarizes the recent progress in this field, including the advantages and limitations of each subdivisional tactic, briefly discusses the reaction mechanisms and challenges, and outlines the synth…

On the Redox Reactivity of a Geometrically Constrained Phosphorus(III) Compound.

The reactivity of a geometrically constrained phosphorus(III) complex bearing the N,N-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-phenolate)amide pincer ligand (P(ONO); 1) towards oxidants and reductants is explored. This compound can be readily oxidized to the phosphorus(V) dihalo-derivatives P(ONO)X2 where X=Cl (2), Br (3) and I (4). Attempts at isolating the analogous difluoride through oxidation of 1 were unsuccessful yielding only the hydrofluoride P(ONO)(H)F (5), however P(ONO)F2 (6) can be accessed via a halide exchange reaction of 2 with KF. Compound 2 can be employed as a precursor to novel cationic spec…

Unfolding the physics of URu2Si2 through silicon to phosphorus substitution.

The heavy fermion intermetallic compound URu2Si2 exhibits a hidden-order phase below the temperature of 17.5 K, which supports both anomalous metallic behavior and unconventional superconductivity. While these individual phenomena have been investigated in detail, it remains unclear how they are related to each other and to what extent uranium f-electron valence fluctuations influence each one. Here we use ligand site substituted URu2Si(2-x)P(x) to establish their evolution under electronic tuning. We find that while hidden order is monotonically suppressed and destroyed for x≤0.035, the super

Freshwater bacteria release methane as a byproduct of phosphorus acquisition.

UNLABELLED: Freshwater lakes emit large amounts of methane, some of which is produced in oxic surface waters. Two potential pathways for aer … methane release from lakes, and that phosphate can repress this activity. Since lakes are typically phosphorus-limited, some methane release in these environments may be a byproduct of phosphorus metabolism, rather than carbon or energy metabolism. Methane emissions from lakes are currently predicted using primary production, eutrophication status, extent of …

A high-pressure polymorph of phosphorus oxonitride with the coesite structure.

The chemical and physical properties of phosphorus oxonitride (PON) closely resemble those of silica, to which it is isosteric. A new high-pressure phase of PON is reported herein. This polymorph, synthesized by using the multianvil technique, crystallizes in the coesite structure. This represents the first occurrence of this very dense network structure outside of SiO2 . Phase-pure coesite PON (coe-PON) can be synthesized in bulk at pressures above 15 GPa. This compound was thoroughly characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction, DFT calculations, and FTIR and MAS NMR spectroscopy, as w…

Effect of humic substances on phosphorus removal by struvite precipitation.

Humic substances (HS) are a major fraction of dissolved organic matters in wastewater. The effect of HS on phosphorus removal by struvite precipitation was investigated using synthetic wastewater under different initial pH values, Mg/P molar ratios and HS concentrations. The composition, morphology and thermal properties of harvested precipitates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. It showed that inhibition effect of HS reached its maximum value of 48.9% at pH 8.0, and decreased to below 10% at pH>9.0…

Phosphorus speciation in a eutrophic lake by ³¹P NMR spectroscopy.

For eutrophic lakes, patterns of phosphorus (P) measured by standard methods are well documented but provide little information about the components comprising standard operational definitions. Dissolved P (DP) and particulate P (PP) represents important but rarely characterized nutrient pools. Samples from Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, USA were characterized using 31-phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((31)P NMR) during the open water season of 2011 in this unmatched temporal study of aquatic P dynamics. A suite of organic and inorganic P forms was detected in both dissolved and pa…

Low phosphorus status might contribute to the onset of obesity.

Overweight and obesity are becoming global health problems. Although genetics certainly plays a role, weight gain is ultimately the result of a failure in the balance between energy expenditure and energy intake. Obesity during the past few decades was paralleled with several changes in dietary habits favouring low phosphorus consumption. This is believed to compromise adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production that is involved in the regulation of energy metabolism. Ingestion of high-carbohydrate-low phosphorus food is known to increase insulin release, to simultaneously stimulate peripheral upt…

The influence of dissolved phosphorus molecular form on recalcitrance and bioavailability.

Several studies have shown Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP) analyses provide a poor index of dissolved phosphorus (P) bioavailability in natural systems. We tested 21 inorganic and organic P containing compounds with series of nutrient uptake and bioavailability bioassay experiments and chemical characterizations. Our results show that in 81% of cases, these compounds did not fit the classic assumption that SRP approximately equals Bioavailable P (BAP). Many organic compounds were classified as non-reactive, but had very rapid uptake kinetics and were nearly entirely bioavailable (e.g., sever…

The roles of the skeleton and phosphorus in the CKD mineral bone disorder.

The CKD mineral bone disorder is a new term coined to describe the multiorgan system failure that is a major component of the excess cardiov … types including vascular smooth muscle cells migrating to the neointima of atherosclerotic plaques. Phosphorus stimulates FGF-23 secretion by osteocytes and expression of the osteoblastic transcriptome, thereby increasing extracellular matrix mineralization in atherosclerotic plaques, hypertrophic cartilage, and skeletal osteoblast surfaces. In CKD, the skel …

Development and characterization of ferrihydrite-modified diatomite as a phosphorus adsorbent.

A novel phosphorus adsorbent, ferrihydrite-modified diatomite was developed and characterized in this study. The ferrihydrite-modified diatomite was made through surface modification treatments including NaOH treatment and ferrihydrite deposition on raw diatomite. In the NaOH treatment, surface SiO(2) of diatomite was partially dissolved in the NaOH solution. The dissolved Si contributed to form the stable 2-line ferrihydrite which deposited into the macropores and mesopores of diatomite. Blocking macropores and larger mesopores of diatomite with 0.24g Fe/g of 2-line ferrihydrite resulted in a…
