Circadian and seasonal variations of electrolytes in aging humans.

The circadian and seasonal variations of a set of routinely determined variables (chloride, sodium, potassium, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium, creatinine, urea and urate) were documented in young men (mean age +/- SD: 24.0 +/- 3.9 yr) and in healthy elderly men (75.3 +/- 6.6) and women (78.2 +/- 9.1). The same urinary variables, except magnesium, were studied in young men. The circadian variability of serum variables was between 2 and 11% except for serum inorganic phosphorus (12-22% according to the group). By contrast, urinary chloride, sodium and potassium revealed large peak-trou

New approaches for solubilization of phosphate rocks through solid-state fermentation by optimization of oxalic acid production.

This study explores the enhancement of phosphate rock (PR) solubilization through solid-state fermentation (SSF) by optimizing oxalic acid production using Aspergillus niger. Key process parameters, including the use of agro-industrial by-products (sugarcane bagasse (SCB), wheat bran (WB), soybean bran (SB)), pH levels, sucrose supplementation, and methanol addition, were systematically evaluated through sequential experimental designs. The results identified SCB and SB in a 1:1 ratio as the most effective substrate. Remarkably, the inclusion of methanol (7 %) and sucrose (0.5 %) resulted in a

Oxidative stress induced by gibberellic acid in bone of suckling rats.

The present study investigates the bone maturity of suckling rats whose mothers were treated with gibberellic acid (GA(3)). Female Wistar rats were divided into two groups: group I that served as controls and group II that received orally GA(3) (200 ppm) from the 14th day of pregnancy until day 14 after delivery. In the GA(3) group, an increase in body and femur weights as well as in femur length of pups was noted when compared to controls. Lipid peroxidation was demonstrated by high femur malondialdehyde levels, while superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase activities, glutathi

Neutral persulfate digestion at sub-boiling temperature in an oven for total dissolved phosphorus determination in natural waters.

A simplified, easily performed persulfate digestion method has been developed to process a large number of water samples for routine determination of total dissolved phosphorus. A neutral potassium persulfate solution (5%, w/v, pH approximately 6.5) is added to the samples (at 10 mg potassium persulfate per mL of sample), which are then digested at 90 degrees C in an oven for 16 h. This method does not require pH adjustment after digestion because neither an acid nor a base is added to the samples prior to digestion. The full color of phosphoantimonylmolybdenum blue from the digested samples d

Enhancing anaerobic digestibility and phosphorus recovery of dairy manure through microwave-based thermochemical pretreatment.

Anaerobic digestion and struvite precipitation are two effective ways of treating dairy manure for recovering biogas and phosphorus. Anaerobic digestion of dairy manure is commonly limited by slow fiber degradation, while struvite precipitation is limited by the availability of orthophosphate. The aim of this work is to study the possibility of using microwave-based thermochemical pretreatment to simultaneously enhance manure anaerobic digestibility (through fiber degradation) and struvite precipitation (through phosphorus solubilization). Microwave heating combined with different chemicals (N

Synthesis and topoisomerase I inhibitory properties of luotonin A analogues.

Luotonin A, a naturally occurring pyrroloquinazolinoquinoline alkaloid, has been previously demonstrated to be a topoisomerase I poison. A number of luotonin A derivatives have now been prepared through the condensation of anthranilic acid derivatives and 1,2-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-b]quinoline-3-one in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride. When dichloromethane was used as solvent the reaction proceeded to a single product. In contrast when the reaction was carried out in tetrahydrofuran or in phosphorus oxychloride, an additional isomeric product was obtained. The luotonin A analogues were evalu

Intermediates in the transformation of phosphonates to phosphate by bacteria.

Phosphorus is an essential element for all known forms of life. In living systems, phosphorus is an integral component of nucleic acids, carbohydrates and phospholipids, where it is incorporated as a derivative of phosphate. However, most Gram-negative bacteria have the capability to use phosphonates as a nutritional source of phosphorus under conditions of phosphate starvation. In these organisms, methylphosphonate is converted to phosphate and methane. In a formal sense, this transformation is a hydrolytic cleavage of a carbon-phosphorus (C-P) bond, but a general enzymatic mechanism for the

Dietary acid load in health and disease.

Maintaining an appropriate acid-base equilibrium is crucial for human health. A primary influencer of this equilibrium is diet, as foods are metabolized into non-volatile acids or bases. Dietary acid load (DAL) is a measure of the acid load derived from diet, taking into account both the potential renal acid load (PRAL) from food components like protein, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium, and the organic acids from foods, which are metabolized to bicarbonate and thus have an alkalinizing effect. Current Western diets are characterized by a high DAL, due to large amounts of animal p

Polyphenolic compounds progress during olive mill wastewater sludge and poultry manure co-composting, and humic substances building (Southeastern Tunisia).

In Mediterranean areas, olive mill wastes pose a major environmental problem owing to their important production and their high polyphenolic compounds and organic acids concentrations. In this work, the evolution of polyphenolic compounds was studied during co-composting of olive mill wastewater sludge and poultry manure, based on qualitative (G-50 sephadex) and quantitative (Folin-Ciocalteu), as well as high pressure liquid chromatography analyses. Results showed a significant polyphenolic content decrease of 99% and a noticeable transformation of low to high molecular weight fraction during

Nutritional and anti-nutritional potential of three accessions of itching bean (Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC var. pruriens): an under-utilized tribal pulse.

Three accessions of the under-utilized legume itching bean (Mucuna pruriens var. pruriens) were analysed for proximate composition, mineral profiles, vitamins (niacin and ascorbic acid), fatty acid profiles, amino acid profiles of total seed protein, in vitro protein digestibility and certain anti-nutritional factors. All three accessions of M. pruriens var. pruriens contained higher amounts of crude protein and crude lipid when compared with most of the commonly consumed pulses. The fatty acid profiles revealed that the seed lipids contained a higher concentration of palmitic acid and linolei

Determination of pethidine and its major metabolites in human urine by gas chromatography.

Procedures based on gas chromatography were established to determine pethidine and its major metabolites in human urine. The chromatographic system consisted of a glass column packed with 3% (w/w) SP2250 on Chromosorb W (80-100 mesh) linked to a nitrogen-phosphorus detector. Diethyl ether was used as the extraction solvent. Pethidinic and norpethidinic acids, and their conjugated metabolites (after beta-glucuronidase treatment) were determined after conversion into pethidine and norpethidine by acid-catalysed esterification. The retention times of pethidine, norpethidine and chlorpheniramine (

Improvements, Variations and Biomedical Applications of the Michaelis-Arbuzov Reaction.

Compounds bearing the phosphorus-carbon (P-C) bond have important pharmacological, biochemical, and toxicological properties. Historically, the most notable reaction for the formation of the P-C bond is the Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction, first described in 1898. The classical Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction entails a reaction between an alkyl halide and a trialkyl phosphite to yield a dialkylalkylphosphonate. Nonetheless, deviations from the classical mechanisms and new modifications have appeared that allowed the expansion of the library of reactants and consequently the chemical space of the yielded

Loss of LaMATE impairs isoflavonoid release from cluster roots of phosphorus-deficient white lupin.

White lupin (Lupinus albus L.) forms brush-like root structures called cluster roots under phosphorus-deficient conditions. Clusters secrete citrate and other organic compounds to mobilize sparingly soluble soil phosphates. In the context of aluminum toxicity tolerance mechanisms in other species, citrate is released via a subgroup of MATE/DTX proteins (multidrug and toxic compound extrusion/detoxification). White lupin contains 56 MATE/DTX genes. Many of these are closely related to gene orthologs with known substrates in other species. LaMATE is a marker gene for functional, mature clusters

Potentials for win-win alliances among animal agriculture and forest products industries: application of the principles of industrial ecology and sustainable development.

Commercial forests in many parts of the world are deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrient-deficient forests often exist in close proximity to large animal feeding operations, meat processing and other food, textile, or other biomass-processing plants, and municipal waste treatment facilities. Many of these facilities produce large surpluses of nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter as gaseous ammonia, urea, uric acid, phosphorus compounds, bacterial sludges, and partially treated municipal wastewaters. These co-existing and substantial nutrient deficiencies and surpluses offer r

Mechanisms of hypophosphataemia in alcoholic patients.

The aim of our study was to determine the possible pathophysiological mechanisms of hypophosphataemia in a group of 127 patients admitted to hospital for alcohol-related causes. Blood and fresh urine specimens were taken to determine acid-base and electrolyte parameters. Thirty-seven patients (29.1%) had hypophosphataemia (serum phosphorus < 0.77 mmol/l) with a range of serum phosphorus of 0.32-0.74 mmol/l. In 17 hypophosphataemic patients inappropriate phosphaturia (FEPO4 > 20%, TmPO4/GFR < 0.80 mmol/l) was evident, possibly due to hypomagnesaemia, metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, or

Accumulation of Phosphorus-Containing Compounds in Developing Seeds of Low-Phytate Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Mutants.

Low phytic acid (lpa) crops are low in phytic acid and high in inorganic phosphorus (Pi). In this study, two lpa pea genotypes, 1-150-81, 1-2347-144, and their progenitor CDC Bronco were grown in field trials for two years. The lpa genotypes were lower in IP₆ and higher in Pi when compared to CDC Bronco. The total P concentration was similar in lpa genotypes and CDC Bronco throughout the seed development. The action of myo-inositol phosphate synthase (MIPS) (EC 5.5.1.4) is the first and rate-limiting step in the phytic acid biosynthesis pathway. Aiming at understanding the genetic basis of the

Glycosylated antitumor ether lipids: activity and mechanism of action.

Glycosylated antitumor ether lipids (GAELs) are distinguished from the alkyllysophospholipids or alkylphosphocholines classes of antitumor ether lipids (AEL) by the presence of a sugar moiety. Non-phosphorus GAELs, the subject of this review, have a sugar moiety in place of the phosphobase found in alkyllysophospholipids. Analogues of non-phosphorus GAELs with glucose, maltose, arabinose, or disaccharide moieties have been synthesized. Non-phosphorus GAELs with monosaccharides have cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects against cancer cells derived from a wide range of tissues, including drug
