A note on transfer of stimulus control in the delayed-cue procedure: facilitation by an overt differential response.

This case study describes initially unsuccessful attempts to use the delayed-cue procedure to teach conditional discriminations to an individual with moderate mental retardation. The task was matching printed-word comparison stimuli to dictated-name sample stimuli. In three experiments, the subject typically waited for the delayed cue unless differential responses to the dictated samples (repeating the sample names) were required. Hence, the study provides an example of a way to make the delayed-cue method more effective. The stimulus control bases for the results are discussed.

Interactions between the rod and the cone pathways in the cat retina.

The receptive field centers of 21 on-center X retinal ganglion cells in cat were tested with stimuli designed to detect nonlinear interactions between the rod and the cone systems. One red and one green stimulus light were always present, at a level such that modulation of the red light essentially affected only cones, and that of the green light only rods. The two lights could be superimposed spatially (overlapped configuration) or fall on separate subareas of the receptive field center (nonoverlapped configuration). In most cases, there was less complete summation of the responses to modulat

Two temporal phases, brightness-dependent and -independent, in the chromatic response elicited by a briefly-flashed monochromatic light: a preliminary report.

The strength of chromatic response elicited by a briefly-flashed monochromatic light, which varied in its exposure duration, was measured with the "transient cancellation method" in Experiment 1. It was found that the chromatic response of a test color depended on brightness of the test field, up to the exposures of 100-200 msec. But it began to decrease, independent of brightness of the field, at the longer durations. The above results were confirmed by Experiment 2, in which the perceived saturation of a colored light was estimated with the two alternative forced choice method. Those results

Flash induced nystagmus (FIN) in the rabbit: input-output relations.

Flash-induced nystagmus (FIN) was elicited by monocular flicker-stimulation at 20-40 Hz. It was found more often in albino than in pigmented rabbits. Slow phase velocity (SPV) showed a gradual increase, then a steady-state level in most animals and an after-response after cessation of stimulation. incremental and decremental phase mainly showed an exponential change in SPV. Apparent time constants were in the range of 5-40 sec. Simultaneous recording of both eyes revealed greater velocity and amplitude of both phases of FIN in the stimulated eye. FIN can be specified as a type of nystagmus tha

Clinical applications of visual evoked potentials in neurology.

Neurological applications of visual evoked potentials (VEP) have been expanding over the last decade. Stimulation techniques and waveform interpretation are reviewed. Physiologic variables including age, sex, habituation, refraction, cooperation, and factors influencing the amount of light reaching the retina will effect the VEP. Technical variables including luminance, check size, field size and color of check will also have an effect on the VEP. When properly performed, VEP can contribute important information on the visual pathways in patients with optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis, optic

The Rolandic mu rhythm: a clinical study of the atypical group.

We studied 241 patients whose electroencephalograms (EEGs) showed 7-13 Hz arch shaped wave patterns (mu rhythm) that are known to appear in … contrast to Group I, the presence of the wave patterns in this group was reinforced by drowsiness, photic stimulation and hyperventilation. The characteristic symptoms for this group were observed in patients diagnosed as having intractable epilepsy or organic brain disorders. In Group II the peak lay between ages 11 through 15. However, in Group II the cases were …

Habituation of visual evoked potentials in healthy infants and in infants with periventricular leukomalacia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether habituation of flash visual evoked potentials is already present during the first 3 months of life, and to explore differences between healthy infants, term infants with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), and preterm infants with PVL. METHODS: Referential recordings to stimuli consisting of photic stimulation presented in blocks were obtained. A total of 25 blocks, 15-stimuli each, were presented. Intrablock and interblock habituation effects were analyzed. RESULTS: In healthy infants of 42-50 and 51-58 weeks of post-conceptional age (PCA), a negative centr…

Pineal metabolic reaction to retinal photostimulation in ganglionectomized rats.

The aim of the present work was to test the pineal gland metabolic reactivity to nocturnal retinal short term photic stimulation in superior cervical ganglionectomized rats. The experimental support for this work is the appearance of a transitory post synaptic hyperactivity in the pineal gland, during the anterograde degenerating process of the conarii sympathetic nerve fibers after surgical removal of the cell body. In this situation the pineal gland is deafferented from the peripheral sympathetic nervous system keeping intact, however, the direct central connections to the deep pineal/lamina…

Pattern visual evoked potentials represent an early index for the evolution of optic chiasma syndrome of tumoral etiology.

The use of visual evoked potentials in the detection of optic chiasma syndrome of tumoral etiology has been controversial in the literature. In our study the pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP) were recorded in 22 healthy free volunteers and in 32 patients with optic chiasma syndrome (OCS) produced by tumors of the hypothalamic-pituitary area, mainly pituitary adenomas with suprasellar extension, proved by CT scan. The PVEP were recorded bilateral after monocular photic stimulation of each atropinized eye, in parallel with a complete ophthalmologic exam consisting in visual field, visual a…

Cerebral cortical isolation in infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy.

Three patients with infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD, Seitelberger's disease) studied between ages 2 and 5 years, with the characteristic electroencephalographic pattern of high-voltage, fast (16-24 c/sec) rhythms and absence of reactivity on eye-opening or closure (Radermecker and Dumon-Radermecker 1972), also showed no changes in response to intermittent photic stimulation and absence of evoked potentials to flashes, clicks or median nerve stimuli. Although some theta rhythms and delta activity appeared during drowsiness and sleep, the fast rhythms persisted as the dominant feature. The…

Effects of single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on functional brain activity: a combined event-related TMS and evoked potential study.

OBJECTIVE: To further evaluate the potential of slew-rate limiting amplifiers to record electrophysiological signals in spite of concurrent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and to explore the effects of single-pulse TMS on electroencephalographic (EEG) correlates of functional brain activity. METHODS: Visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) to checkerboards were recorded in 7 right-handed subjects, while single-pulse TMS was applied to the occipital pole either at visual stimulus onset, during the build-up or at the expected peak of the early VEP component P1 (VIS&TMS). Timing of TMS was indi

Phosphene thresholds correlate with paired-pulse suppression of visually evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: Phosphene thresholds (PT) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as well as paired-pulse suppression (PPS) of visually evoked potentials (VEP) are used to characterize visual cortex excitability, however, their relation remains unknown. METHODS: We measured PT after single TMS over the occipital lobe, and recorded VEPs after paired-pulse stimulation at short stimulus-onset-asynchronies in the same subject. PPS was expressed by the ratio second to first response. RESULTS: We found a negative correlation between PT and PPS (r = -0.36, P = 0.039) indicating that higher P

Reflex epilepsies: experience in Sri Lanka.

Reflex epilepsy (RE) is characterised by seizures that are regularly elicited by some specific stimulus or event mediated by neural pathways. In a prospective study of 1287 epileptic patients seen at Peradeniya, 223 (17.3%) were found to have RE, eating being the commonest stimulus (191 patients, 85.7%). Photosensitive epilepsy (PSE) was relatively rare. Intermittent photic stimulation on 874 unselected epileptic patients produced a positive photoconvulsive response in 60 (6.9%). None had photosensitive seizures, but 3 had a higher frequency of seizures while watching television. Eating epilep…

The relation between the pip-and-pop effect and audiovisual integration capacity.

The pip-and-pop effect describes the phenomenon wherein a nonspatial auditory signal significantly enhances visual search efficiency for a single target in a dynamic array, which may depend on audiovisual integration. However, how individual differences in audiovisual integration capacity modulate this effect remains unclear. The present study provides the first systematic examination of the relationship between audiovisual integration capacity and the pip-and-pop effect across two experiments. In Experiment 1, we replicated the classic pip-and-pop effect using a dynamic single-target visual s

The Hidden Benefits of Noise: Low-Frequency tRNS and Dynamic Visual Noise Enhance Visual Processing.

Sensory and perceptual processing are inherently shaped by both internal and external noise sources. While noise is typically seen as disruptive, it can, under certain conditions, enhance the detection of weak sensory signals-a phenomenon known as stochastic resonance (SR). Research on SR has primarily focused on dissimilar noise sources such as static visual noise or high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS), leaving it unclear whether different noise types produce similar enhancements or operate through shared mechanisms. Here, we investigated how three external noise so
