BACKGROUND: Collegiate athletes face a high risk of non-contact ACL injuries during pivoting and landing maneuvers. Current evidence supports neuromuscular training for injury prevention, but optimal program duration and specific adaptations remain unclear. This study investigated whether a four-week neuromuscular training program could enhance functional performance and modifiable biomechanical risk factors in high-risk athletes.
METHODS: This single-group pre-/post-test design recruited 30 competitive collegiate athletes (median age: 18.5 years; interquartile range [IQR]: 17-25) who complet

Background Back pain is a frequent problem for swimmers, especially for Masters swimmers. The cause seems to be insufficient core stability. Objective The goal of this study is to investigate whether specific core musculature training has a positive influence on low back pain and swimmers' perceived performance. Method Two groups (Masters swimmers and a control group) performed a guided 8-week training program. Changes in the core musculature were documented via tests carried out before and after the training program. Additional information was collected during the tests and at a follow-up int

The abundance of CA/GT repeats in the DNA of the dog (Canis familiaris) has established the importance of polymorphic microsatellites in the development of a low density map of the canine genome. The assignment of linkage groups of markers to chromosomes by physical mapping requires reliable cytogenetic techniques for routine production of metaphase cells. The dog has 78 chromosomes, many of which are smaller and more contracted than those of other mammals. Although the molecular study of inherited disease in dogs has important implications for both improved welfare in dogs and the provision o

Sweat evaporation is the body's primary cooling mechanism, yet the physical factors governing it are not fully understood. We identify a "dueling buoyancy" effect in the context of the human body, in which perspiration vapor reduces the near-skin air density, counteracting the downward flow driven by cooling of warm air upon contact with the skin. In hot, arid, stagnant environments, this opposing buoyancy suppresses free convection and can reduce sweat evaporation by more than half. As a result, commonly used thermoregulation models can substantially underpredict body temperature (e.g., by 1°

Artificial intelligence (AI) companions are increasingly used for social, emotional, and sometimes romantic fulfillment, raising questions about how people perceive and engage with these technologies. This study explored attitudes toward AI companionship and whether interviewer type (AI, human, or unmoderated) affects disclosure or engagement. A mixed-methods design was employed with 135 adult participants, who completed structured interviews including Likert scale items and open-ended questions about their views on AI companions. Most participants (55.6%) expressed hesitancy or resistance tow

Over the past three turbulent decades, research has profoundly reshaped our understanding of chronic Toxoplasma gondii infection-traditionally regarded as harmless in immunocompetent individuals-unveiling its surprising impact on human health, performance, and behavior. This review emphasizes the effects of chronic Toxoplasma infection on physical and mental health, cognitive performance, and behavioral changes, highlighting key findings from studies investigating these domains, with a particular focus on both ultimate and proximate mechanisms underlying the observed effects. To this end, the

Finite element (FE) models of long bones are widely used to analyze implant designs. Experimental validation has been used to examine the accuracy of FE models of cadaveric femurs; however, although convergence tests have been carried out, no FE models of an intact and implanted human cadaveric tibia have been validated using a range of experimental loading conditions. The aim of the current study was to create FE models of a human cadaveric tibia, both intact and implanted with a unicompartmental knee replacement, and to validate the models against results obtained from a comprehensive set of

Electronic artificial skin (E-skin) replicates human tactile sensations with exceptional sensitivity and accuracy, enabling the detection of physical properties, including the shape, material, and texture of objects. Current technologies effectively detect slippage on dry surfaces but not on oil- or water-coated wet surfaces. This paper presents a wearable slip sensor featuring a micropatterned structure inspired by human fingerprints, capable of detecting slippage under all surface wetness conditions. The proposed sensor incorporates a randomly patterned fingerprint design, laser-etched onto

Recent data demonstrate improved locomotion with high-intensity locomotor training (LT) in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), although concerns remain regarding reinforcement of abnormal motor strategies. The present study evaluated the effects of LT intensity on kinematic and neuromuscular coordination in individuals with iSCI. Using a randomized, crossover design, participants with iSCI received up to 20 sessions of high-intensity LT, with attempts to achieve 70-85% of age-predicted maximum heart rate (HRmax), or low-intensity LT (50-65% HRmax), following which the other

Background: A false division between mental and physical disorders is supported by dualism, contributing to mental health stigma. There is a widespread misconception about the prognosis and treatment options for psychiatric diseases. This is despite data supporting the effectiveness of psychiatric treatments for a variety of illnesses that have been proven by meta-analysis. In general, the efficacy of drugs used to treat physical problems and psychiatric disorders is comparable. Methods: In this article, experts from a variety of fields-including psychiatry, primary care, and general medicine-

The overpopulation of stray cats in urban areas represents a potential risk for humans, as stray cats may carry diseases, such as toxoplasmosis, and virus such as rabies, the feline immunodeficiency, and the feline leukemia. In Old San Juan, a historic neighborhood and one of the most touristic places in Puerto Rico, there is an overpopulation of stray cats. In this study, we generated baseline information fundamental to developing a successful control program by estimating the stray cat population size, density, and spatial distribution. Furthermore, we quantified the number of neutered cats

Enhancing peak landing forces and ensuring faster stabilization in the lower limbs during jumping activities can significantly improve performance and decrease the risk of injury among basketball players. This study aimed to compare the effects of unilateral (uPJT) and bilateral plyometric jump training (bPJT) programs on various performance measures, including countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), and single-leg land and hold (SLLH) test outcomes, assessed using force plates. A randomized multi-arm study design was employed, comprising two experimental groups (n = 25; uPJT and n = 25;

This study examined the frequency of the most demanding scenarios (MDS) during official soccer matches using rolling averages over 1, 5, and 10 min. Forty-two Under-19 players from different positions (central defenders, full-backs, central midfielders, wide midfielders, offensive midfielders, and forwards) were monitored across 27 matches using GPS to track distance covered, high-speed running, sprint distance, accelerations, and decelerations. Intensity thresholds were established based on percentiles (0-25, 25-50, 50-75, 75-100, and ≥100). The main findings suggest that: (i) Peak Demands oc
