Influence of body CO2 stores on ventilatory dynamics during exercise.

Pulmonary CO2 flow (the product of cardiac output and mixed venous CO2 content) is purported to be an important determinant of ventilatory dynamics in moderate exercise. Depletion of body CO2 stores prior to exercise should thus slow these dynamics. We investigated, therefore, the effects of reducing the CO2 stores by controlled volitional hyperventilation on cardiorespiratory and gas exchange response dynamics to 100 W cycling in six healthy adults. The control responses of ventilation (VE), CO2 output (VCO2), O2 uptake (VO2), and heart rate were comprised of an abrupt increase at exercise on

Cardiopulmonary coupling during exercise.

Muscular exercise imposes the most potent sustained stress to cellular energetics. At work rates below the anaerobic threshold (i.e. no sustained lactic acidosis), the ventilatory and cardiovascular responses regulate arterial PCO2, [H+] and PO2 at or close to their resting levels in the steady state. However, dynamic forcing and systems-analytic techniques reveal two phases of the non-steady-state response dynamics. In the first phase, increased gas flow to the lungs results solely from increased pulmonary blood flow, with alveolar gas tensions being maintained at their resting levels by a co

Low back pain in forty to forty-seven year old men. I. Frequency of occurrence and impact on medical services.

A randomised sample of 940, 40 to 47 year old, men were asked to participate in an investigation where low back pain (LBP) was studied. 716 men (76%) were personally investigated and information concerning the remaining men was received from the Swedish National Health Insurance Office. The life time incidence of LBP was 61%, the prevalence 31%. 40% of the participants with LBP had sciatica. The disability prevented work in 3.6% of the participants and 4% had been off work more than three months because of LBP in the three years preceding the study (1975-1977). 40% had consulted a physician, 3

Spontaneous idiopathic hematoma of the spermatic cord: a report of 2 cases.

We present 2 cases of spontaneous idiopathic spermatic cord hematoma and review the literature. These hematomas predominately occur in untraumatized young adults after physically stressful exercise. Surgical exploration was performed in 4 previously reported cases and our own. In each case the preoperative diagnosis was incorrect. Since this clinical entity cannot clearly be distinguished from other causes of an acute scrotum surgical exploration seems warranted. Possible etiologies of spontaneous idiopathic spermatic cord hematoma are spermatic cord vein rupture and tear in the cremasteric mu

Oronasal distribution of respiratory airflow.

The oronasal distribution of respiratory airflow was determined during incrementally graded submaximal exercise in 30 (14 M, 16 F) healthy adult volunteers. Nasal airflow was measured by a pneumotachograph attached to a nasal mask. Oral airflow was determined as the difference between nasal airflow and total pulmonary airflow, the latter being measured by a head-out exercise body plethysmograph. The two airflow signals were sampled every 20 msec by a microprocessor, which calculated the oral and nasal minute volumes (separating inspiration and expiration) and produced an on-line print-out of t

Decelerating the aging process.

Diseases whose incidence and prevalence are increased in the elderly and whose cytopathology, hormones, and immunogenesis differ, generally are included in the field of geriatrics. These conditions may be precipitated or accelerated in quantity or type by a wide variety of genetic and environmental factors. Chronological and progressive deterioration of selected cells, organs, and tissues, and their functions may occur without major specific pathology. These processes are referred to as senescence and its study, is gerontology.Geriatrics includes senility and diseases of the elderly. Terms ass

Treating obesity in children and adolescents: a review.

Researchers and health practitioners are becoming increasingly concerned with the problems associated with obesity among children and adolescents. Obesity tends to persist into adulthood and to be associated with a variety of physical and psychological problems. Treatment approaches used to date are generally impotent, but some promising short-term results have been achieved with some forms of dietary counseling, exercise programs, total environmental management, and behavior therapy. But even with these strategies, clinically significant weight loss is rare and advances during treatment are r

Relative contributions of hypocarbia and hyperpnea as mechanisms in postexercise asthma.

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the relative contributions of hyperpnea and hypocapnia in the induction of postexercise asthma. To achieve these ends, eight young asthmatics were exercised on a treadmill while minute ventilations (VE) and end-tidal CO2 (PET CO2) tensions were continuously recorded. The subjects were then restudied using a partial rebreathing technique that allowed separation of minute and alveolar ventilations so that independent evaluations could be made of the relative effects of bulk airflow on pulmonary mechanics as well as a systematic study of hypocapnia
