High mountains harbor a considerable proportion of biodiversity, but we know little about how diverse plants adapt to the harsh environment. Here we finished a high-quality genome assembly for Dasiphora fruticosa, an ecologically important plant distributed in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and lowland of the Northern Hemisphere, and resequenced 592 natural individuals to address how this horticulture plant adapts to highland. Demographic analysis revealed D. fruticosa underwent a bottleneck after Naynayxungla Glaciation. Selective sweep analysis of two pairs of lowland and highland populations i

Magnesium (Mg) is the second most abundant cation in plants, and, as such, is involved in numerous physiological and biochemical processes, including photosynthesis, enzyme activation, and synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins. Due to its relatively small ionic radius and large hydrated radius, Mg binds weakly to soil and root surfaces, and thereby is easily leached from soil. Mg deficiency not only affects crop productivity and quality, but also contributes to numerous chronic human diseases. Therefore, Mg nutrition in plants is an important issue in nutrition and food security. To acquire

Plant life is coordinated by several developmental and defense associated mechanisms and cell wall is actively important in these mechanisms. The plant cell wall also serves as an important component system that monitors plant growth and defense apart from only protecting the cell. However, resident sensors of the plant cell membrane and pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) also constitute major response mechanisms in plants while they are both as well developed for maintaining cell wall integrity (CWI). These PRRs are molecules such as ligands, peptides or glycans that are released for sensin

BACKGROUND: Deciphering the genetic basis of above and below ground organs communication is essential for plant adaptation. In grafted perennial crops, such as grapevine, identifying genes from the roots system controlling the expression of shoot traits is essential to improve plant adaptation to environmental conditions through rootstock breeding. However, the grapevine rootstocks genetic control on conferred scion traits has rarely been explored and even less considering genetic diversity at the intra-species level through GWAS. In this study we used a Vitis berlandieri natural population co

Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a global bacterial threat for a diversity of plants, including olive trees. However, current understanding of host responses upon Xf-infection is limited to allow early disease prediction, diagnosis, and sustainable strategies for breeding on plant tolerance. Recently, we identified a major complex trait for early de novo programming, named CoV-MAC-TED, by comparing early transcriptome data during plant cell survival with SARS-CoV-2-infected human cells. This trait linked ROS/RNS balancing during first hours of stress perception with increased aerobic fermentation co

Graphene oxide (GO) is widely used in biotechnology. The purpose of this study was to improve the efficiency of genetic transformation by constructing a delivery system based on GO. First, GO was applied in the traditional genetic transformation scheme for watermelons. We used hydroponics and tissue culture methods to determine the optimal concentration of GO for watermelon plant growth, we then used this concentration of GO for watermelon genetic transformation and found that GO can inhibit the growth of Agrobacterium tumefaciens and promote the growth of explants. This discovery can simplify

The infection caused by grain mold in rainy season grown sorghum deteriorates the physical and chemical quality of the grain, which causes a reduction in grain size, blackening, and making them unfit for human consumption. Therefore, the breeding for grain mold resistance has become a necessity. Pedigree breeding has been widely used across the globe to tackle the problem of grain mold. In the present study, a population breeding approach was employed to develop genotypes resistant to grain mold. The complex genotype × environment interactions (GEIs) make the task of identifying stable grain m

BACKGROUND: The founders of Hereditas envisioned that race biology would be a major subject that had social applications with utmost importance in the near future. Anthropometrics was in this context understood to be the pure and eugenics the applied science. Sweden had a long tradition in physical anthropometry. Herman Lundborg, member of the advisory board of Hereditas, united the anthropometric and eugenic approaches in a synthesis. He was the first head of the Institute for Race Biology in Sweden. The contents of Hereditas reflect the development of race biology in the Nordic countries.

Chitinase is one of the important pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins in plants. By comparative proteomics study, a novel pathogen-responsive chitinase (known as GbCHI) has been identified from sea-island cotton (Gossypium barbadense). The GbCHI cDNA was cloned from wilt-resistant sea-island cotton and the anti-fungal activity of the gene product was investigated. qRT-PCR analysis indicated that GbCHI was expressed constitutively in root, stem, leaf, flower, and ovule of cotton plant, and the expression could be induced by Verticillium dahliae and plant hormone SA, ACC, and JA. Metabolomics-based prediction models are reshaping hybrid breeding by enabling early and accurate identification of superior genotypes. Papaver somniferum (opium poppy), a pharmaceutically important crop producing benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, is particularly suited to benefit from this approach. Although metabolomics and machine learning have been widely applied in food and oilseed crops, their potential remains largely unexplored in medicinal plants, especially opium poppy. Here, we developed a metabolomics-guided, machine learning-assisted framework to predict hybrid performance and acceler

Pigmented wheat varieties (Triticum aestivum spp.) are getting increasingly popular in modern nutrition and thoroughly researched for their functional and nutraceutical value. The colour of these wheat grains is caused by the expression of natural pigments, including carotenoids and anthocyanins, that can be restricted to either the endosperm, pericarp and/or aleurone layers. While contrasts in phytochemical synthesis give rise to variations among purple, blue, dark and yellow grain's antioxidant and radical scavenging capacities, little is known about their influence on gluten proteins expres

BACKGROUND: Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are a dioecious climbing perennial, with the dried mature "cones" (strobili) of the pistillate/female inflorescences being widely used as both a bittering agent and to enhance the flavour of beer. The glandular trichomes of the bract and bracteole flowering structures of the cones produce an abundance of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids, bitter acids and prenylated phenolics depending on plant genetics, developmental stage and environment. More knowledge is required on the functional and allelic diversity of terpene synthase (TPS) genes responsibl

This study aimed to investigate the difference between Holstein and Holstein × Gyr breeds on feeding behavior and performance of heifers grazing temperate pasture. The experiment was carried out in 89 days, split into 14 days of adaptation, and 3 periods of 25 days. Two treatments were used: Holstein (HOL; n = 7) and Holstein × Gyr (HG; n = 7). Heifers grazed a consortium of ryegrass and bristle oats and were supplemented individually daily with cornmeal at 0.33% of body weight plus 5 kg/day of corn silage. For 3 consecutive days, feeding behavior was observed for individual animals from direc

BACKGROUND: Greater yam (Dioscorea alata L.) is a major tropical and subtropical staple crop cultivated for its starchy tubers. Breeding of this dioecious species is hampered by its erratic flowering, yet little is currently known on the genetic determinism of its sexual reproduction.
RESULT: Here we used a genome-wide association approach and identified a major genetic barrier to reproduction in yam on chromosome 1, as represented by two candidate genes. A deleterious effect on male fitness could be hypothesized considering the involvement of these two genes in male reproduction and the low

Intercropping, the simultaneous production of multiple crops on the same field, provides opportunities for the sustainable intensification of agriculture if it can provide a greater yield per unit land and fertilizer than sole crops. The worldwide absolute yield gain of intercropping as compared with sole crops has not been analysed. We therefore performed a global meta-analysis to quantify the effect of intercropping on the yield gain, exploring the effects of crop species combinations, temporal and spatial arrangements, and fertilizer input. We found that the absolute yield gains, compared w

The aim of this study was to compare immunogenic and toxic gluten peptides related to celiac disease (CD). 100 accessions of genotypes selected during the 20th century in Tunisia were in vitro digested and then analyzed by UPLC/ESI-MS technique using an isotopically labeled internal standard. The first MANOVA confirmed a high variability in the content of immunogenic and toxic peptides reflecting high genetic diversity in the germplasm released during the past century in Tunisia, consistently with PCA and clustering analysis results. Our finding showed also important variability in CD epitopes

Plant architecture, especially plant height and tiller angle, plays a pivotal role in determining wheat yield. In this study, we characterize a wheat mutant termed prostrate and semidwarf 1 (prose1), exhibiting both a prostrate growth habit and semidwarfism. Map-based cloning of the causal gene of prose1 identifies a semi-dominant mutation in Rht-A1-a homoeolog of the canonical Green Revolution genes-resulting in a glycine-to-glutamate substitution in the DELLA protein (designated Rht-A1h). The mutant protein displays enhanced physical interactions with tiller angle regulators including TaPROG

High-density planting is an effective strategy to increase maize yield but imposes greater demands on plant architectural adaptability. To elucidate the structural response mechanisms of maize under varying planting densities, we developed a high-throughput 3D phenotyping system tailored to complex field conditions. High-precision point clouds of field-sampled plants were obtained via multi-view 3D reconstruction. Using a deep learning network, stem and leaf organs were semantically segmented (95.6% accuracy), while leaves were individually separated via clustering (94.8% accuracy). From these
