Pneumococcal meningitis in Mexico. Serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance before and after the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in pediatric patients. Results from the GIVEBPVac group.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a leading cause of bacterial meningitis in children, despite widespread use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs). This study evaluates changes in serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pediatric pneumococcal meningitis in Mexico, before and after PCV introduction. METHODS: We conducted a prospective analysis of pneumococcal isolates collected from children aged 0-17 years diagnosed with meningitis between 1993 and 2024 through the GIVEBPVac surveillance network. Serotyping was performed using the Neufeld-Quellung reaction,

Impact of 10- and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines on incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease in children aged under 16 years in Germany, 2009 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: The most common type of kidney cancer is ccRCC (Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma). Existing research has shown that when kidney cancer progresses from T2 to T3 or T4 stage, the treatment options and prognosis significantly differ. The aim of this study is to identify prognosis-related genes in ccRCC using single-cell data and Mendelian randomization analysis. METHODS: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from six ccRCC patients (GSE156632) were analyzed in R. After quality control and normalization, cells were embedded, clustered, and annotated to define major cell types. Ce

American Academy of Pediatrics. Committee on Infectious Diseases. Technical report: prevention of pneumococcal infections, including the use of pneumococcal conjugate and polysaccharide vaccines and antibiotic prophylaxis.

Pneumococcal infections are the most common invasive bacterial infections in children in the United States. The incidence of invasive pneumococcal infections peaks in children younger than 2 years, reaching rates of 228/100,000 in children 6 to 12 months old. Children with functional or anatomic asplenia (including sickle cell disease [SCD]) and children with human immunodeficiency virus infection have pneumococcal infection rates 20- to 100-fold higher than those of healthy children during the first 5 years of life. Others at high risk of pneumococcal infections include children with congenit

Population genomics of pneumococcal carriage in South Africa following the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) immunization.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major human pathogen responsible for over 317000 deaths in children <5 years of age with the burden of the disease being highest in low- and middle-income countries including South Africa. Following the introduction of the 7-valent and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in South Africa in 2009 and 2011, respectively, a decrease in both invasive pneumococcal infections and asymptomatic carriage of vaccine-type pneumococci were reported. In this study, we described the changing epidemiology of the pneumococcal carriage population in South Africa, by sequ

Persistent and Emerging Pneumococcal Carriage Serotypes in a Rural Gambian Community After 10 Years of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Pressure.

BACKGROUND: The continuing impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) in regions with high pneumococcal transmission is threatened by the persistence of vaccine serotypes (VTs) and the emergence of nonvaccine serotypes (NVTs). METHODS: In 2016, we conducted a cross-sectional carriage survey (CSS5) in a community where PCV7 was first introduced in 2006 during a cluster-randomized trial conducted before nationwide introduction of PCV7 (2009) and PCV13 (2011). We estimated prevalence of PCV13 VT and NVT by age and compared these with earlier surveys before (CSS0), during (CSS1-3), and afte

Lack of effectiveness of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccination against pneumococcal carriage density in Papua New Guinean infants.

BACKGROUND: Papua New Guinea (PNG) introduced the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in 2014, with administration at 1, 2, and 3 months of age. PCV13 has reduced or eliminated carriage of vaccine types in populations with low pneumococcal carriage prevalence, carriage density and serotype diversity. This study investigated PCV13 impact on serotype-specific pneumococcal carriage prevalence, density, and serotype diversity in PNG infants, who have some of the highest reported rates of pneumococcal carriage and disease in the world. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected at 1

Pneumococcal carriage in children in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia before and one year after the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae precedes disease, is the source of pneumococcal community spread, and the mechanism for herd protection provided by pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs). There are few PCV impact studies in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Asia. In 2016, Mongolia introduced the 13-valent PCV (PCV13) in a phased manner using a 2 + 1 schedule, with catch-up. We aimed to assess the impact of PCV13 introduction on nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage and density in children in Mongolia. METHODS: We conducted two cross-sectional car

Development of pneumococcal mastoiditis due to multidrug-resistant serotype 19A despite three doses of 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine.

Acute mastoiditis is a potential complication of acute otitis media (AOM), with Streptococcus pneumoniae historically the most common pathogen isolated. Following the release of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in 2000, a marked decline in invasive pneumococcal disease and a smaller reduction in pneumococcal AOM were observed, but data regarding its impact on acute mastoiditis are limited. With the recent introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), it is anticipated that pneumococcal AOM and invasive disease will further diminish. We report a case of acute

The cost-burden of paediatric pneumococcal disease in Sweden and the potential cost-effectiveness of prevention using 7-valent pneumococcal vaccine.

AIMS: A cost-effectiveness model was used to estimate the change in disease burden that might be expected if PCV7 was included as part of the routine 3-dose vaccination schedule in Sweden. METHODS: An economic model was populated with data from the main clinical PCV7 efficacy trials, demographic data from government sources, surveillance and epidemiologic data from the US and Nordic region, and average treatment costs, considering the impact of disease on the whole national population. RESULTS: The model estimated that PCV7 would prevent 18,856 cases of AOM, 684 of pneumonia, 86 of pneumococ
