BACKGROUND: Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) is a seldom encountered yet serious complication after thoracic surgery, and is often difficult to treat. Large BPFs usually require surgical intervention, and a variety of different surgical reconstruction options have been previously described. Pulmonary fibrosis and impeding gangrene as complications of radiotherapy and chemotherapy developed in a patient who previously underwent right upper lobectomy. Following completion pneumonectomy, bronchopleural fistula and consecutive thoracic empyema formed. This case presentation is to demonstrate the vicious circle of severe complications following oncological treatment. The role of vacuum assisted closure and other management options are discussed which resulted in full recovery of the patient after three years finally.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the risks and complications of CT-guided needle biopsy of lung nodules in patients with a single lung after pneumonectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A database search for the records of patients who had undergone lung biopsy over a 9-year period revealed that 1771 patients had done so. Fourteen (0.7%) of these patients (11 men, three women; mean age, 63 years; range, 42.4-79.6 years) had undergone pneumonectomy and been referred for biopsy of the contralateral lung. Pulmonary zygomycosis rarely occurs in the absence of underlying disease. We report a patient with granulomatous pulmonary zygomycosis without underlying disease who presented with a pulmonary mass. We present the computed tomographic findings that we believe have not been described previously. We also report the successful treatment by pneumonectomy.
