This study analyzes the profiles of pesticide intoxication, here distinguished by agricultural pesticides, household pesticides, veterinary products, and rodenticides, according to data obtained from the National Poisoning Information System (SINITOX) database, from 1999 to 2003. The findings indicate different profiles for poisonings caused by these four products. While poisoning by agricultural pesticides and veterinary products is more frequent among adults and males, poisoning by household pesticides and rodenticides is more frequent among children and females. The lethality for each kind

Kratom, the leaves of a tropical evergreen tree (Mitragyna speciosa), is traditionally consumed in Southeast Asia for pain relief, mood enhancement, and to relieve symptoms of opioid withdrawal. Kratom contains psychoactive compounds that interact with opioid receptors and is widely available in various forms in the United States. Its evolution from natural leaf to high-potency alkaloid products has raised concerns about toxicity. Data on kratom-related use that resulted in a report to the National Poison Data System (NPDS) (i.e., kratom exposure report) during 2015-2025 were analyzed to asses

INTRODUCTION: Tropatepine is an antiparkinsonian drug that can be associated with antimuscarinic delirium in overdose. Two acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, neostigmine and physostigmine, are available for the management of tropatepine poisoning. The aim of this study is to describe a series of tropatepine poisonings and to compare the management of patients.
METHODS: This epidemiological, retrospective, multicentre study reviewed tropatepine intoxications reported to French poison centres from 1 January 2000 to 13 July 2023. The relationship between reduction in central antimuscarinic signs a

BACKGROUND: Coral snake bites from Micrurus fulvius and Micrurus tener account for < 1% of all snake bites in North America. Coral snake envenomation may cause significant neurotoxicity, including respiratory insufficiency, and its onset may be delayed up to 13 h.
CASE REPORT: We present a unique patient encounter of M. tener venom exposure through the ocular mucous membranes and a small cutaneous bite, resulting in neurotoxicity. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of systemic neurotoxicity associated with ocular contact with coral snake venom. Our patient developed rapid-onset

CONTEXT: In the United States, regional poison centers frequently receive calls about toxic workplace exposures. Most poison centers do not share call details routinely with governmental regulatory agencies. Worker health and safety could be enhanced if regulators such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had the ability to investigate these events and prevent similar incidents. With this goal in mind, the Georgia Poison Center (GPC) began referring occupational exposures to OSHA in July 2014.
METHODS: GPC began collecting additional employer details when handling occup

Literature regarding acute human toxicity of thiopurines is limited to a handful of case reports. Our objectives were to describe all cases of overdose with thiopurines reported to the Swiss Toxicological Information Centre between 1995-2013. A retrospective analysis was performed to determine circumstances, magnitude, management and outcome of overdose with these substances. A total of 40 cases (14 paediatric) were reported (azathioprine, n = 35; 6-mercaptopurine, n = 5). Of these, 25 were with suicidal intent, 12 were accidental and 3 were iatrogenic errors. The magnitude of overdose ranged

BACKGROUND: Black widow spider (Latrodectus spp.) envenomation remains the most clinically significant spider envenomation in the US. The syndrome is characterized by painful muscle rigidity and autonomic disturbances. Treatment has ranged from symptomatic care to administration of specific antivenom. Declining antivenom availability and, possibly, the fear of hypersensitivity allergic reactions, has limited antivenom use in the US.
OBJECTIVE: To describe Latrodectus spp. exposures and the subsequent treatment reported to US poison centers; the secondary objective was to identify factors asso

BACKGROUND: The outcome after chlorine exposures has been poorly described.
METHODS: We conducted a 5-year retrospective poison control center review of chlorine exposure cases. The inclusion criteria were self (or surrogate) reported concentrated 'chlorine' liquid (> or =10% concentration of sodium hypochorite) or tablet (> or =90% concentration) exposure. Two reviewers blinded to the main purpose of the study reviewed charts and a third reviewed 10% of the charts, and a kappa score was calculated. Parameters reviewed included the type of exposure (tablets, liquid or both), symptoms (cough,

Glyphosate is among the pesticides most frequently reported to the California EPA Pesticide Illness Surveillance Program. We analyzed glyphosate-related calls to the Pesticide Illness Surveillance Program in order to assess the number of reports involving systemic symptoms and to better understand the nature and severity of reported cases. Data on glyphosate and other pesticides are available for the years 1982-1997 including: type of exposure (agricultural/other); target organ(s) affected (skin/eye/respiratory/systemic); exposure(s); an assessment of causal relationship (possible, probable, o

Long-term exposure to organic solvents can result in damage of the central nervous system. The WHO recognises the following stages: organic affective syndrome, mild chronic toxic encephalopathy (CTE), and severe CTE. There is no golden standard for the diagnosis of CTE. Mild CTE is characterised by fatigue, mood disturbances, memory and attention disorders. In the Netherlands, a so-called 'solvent team' consisting of an occupational physician, a neurologist, a neuropsychologist and an occupational hygienist, assesses patients suspected of having CTE. The diagnostic procedure consists of three

1. Adult hospital admissions following acute exposures to pesticides are very uncommon and are more often due to parasuicide than to accidents. 2. Most accidental pesticide incidents are work-related. 3. Males are more likely to be involved than females (2.9:1). 4. Life-threatening and fatal consequences developed in 24% of 54 incidents. 5. Of the 10 fatalities, eight were caused by paraquat, eight were due to parasuicide and two to non-work related accidents.

Atropa belladonna (A. belladonna), commonly known as deadly nightshade, is a poisonous plant belonging to the Solanaceae family. The toxic effects of A. belladonna are attributable to its alkaloid content, which possesses potent anticholinergic properties. These alkaloids are responsible for the plant's toxicity and can cause a range of adverse effects in humans and animals upon ingestion or contact. In this report, we describe two atypical cases of A. belladonna poisoning resulting from accidental ingestion of the plant's raw leaves, which were referred to the emergency room of a poisoning ce

BACKGROUND: Poisoning with agricultural toxins is well known in the adult environment, but is rarely seen in children. Vancouver, British Columbia, borders on a large agricultural area, and the British Columbia Children's Hospital is the provincial referral center for major pediatric emergencies. In our experience, children from farming communities are vulnerable to a range of agriculturally related injuries, and exposure to toxic chemicals requiring hospitalization is not rare.
METHODS: This is a case report with literature review.
RESULTS: A child presenting in a coma proved later to have

We present the case of a patient who developed myalgia as the primary symptom of envenomation by the eastern coral snake, Micrurus fulvius. The patient was evaluated and treated in the emergency department. Physical examination did not demonstrate any neuromuscular abnormalities. On consultation with the poison control center, the patient's myalgia was determined to be an effect of envenomation, and 5 vials of North American coral snake antivenin were administered. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit where his symptoms resolved. He was discharged the following day after remaini
