BACKGROUND: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) struggled to end the tenth outbreak of Ebola virus disease (Ebola), which appeared in North Kivu in 2018. It was reported that rumors were hampering the response effort. We sought to identify any rumors that could have influenced outbreak containment and affected prevention in unaffected areas of DR Congo.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study in DR Congo over a period of 2 months (from August 1 to September 30, 2019) using in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs). The participants were recruited from five region

BACKGROUND: The United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs 1988 ("1988 Convention") expresses a strong normative preference for criminalising drug possession. Historically, the United Nations offices responsible for overseeing the treaties have held that decriminalisation of drug possession is contrary to the treaties. Leading up to and during UNGASS 2016, however, rather than emphasise criminalisation, the high-ranking officials from the drug control offices emphasised the treaties' allowance of alternatives to punishment for drug possession offences.

It is known that there is a large extent of working dissatisfaction within some professional groups of the health service system. Especially in the hospital sector, many "struggles for power" take place. Unfortunately, these struggles are often only examined with regard to individual points of view without considering the system-oriented background. The following text will reflect the discussion in social sciences as to the distribution of power within the health service system. The double meaning of the distribution of power will be explained and, by means of decisive phenomenons, the develop

During the 1950s and 1960s professionals intensely debated the prospect of changes in the mental health system, largely as a result of the introduction of new therapies, revised theories of mental disorder, and shifting policies governing mental health accommodation. As well as giving rise to new subspecialties within medicine, psychiatrists in some jurisdictions at this time worked closely with psychologists in an attempt to offer a more comprehensive set of options that merged theory with practice. In Saskatchewan, mental health professionals worked closely with government officials and bure

BACKGROUND: Majority of the countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region are not on track to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals, yet even more ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 on heath, have been adopted. This paper highlights the challenges - amplified by the recent Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa - that require WHO and other partners' dialogue in support of the countries, and debate on how WHO can leverage the existing space and place to foster health development dialogues in the Region.

The paradigmatic system of societal abuse occurs in totalitarian state systems. The relational systems of subjugation that maintain such states of terror must, of necessity, destroy any authentic civic space in which individuals can flourish. Similar dynamics characterize child abuse within families. Survival requires the use of varied strategies, the most extreme of which are dissociative in nature, and that result in marked distortions of developmental trajectories across all psychological domains. Such dynamics are mirrored in dissociative systems that, in the absence of intervention, perpe

Russia provides an interesting context for studying the labor market experiences of the elderly because of its experience with market transition, its looming growth in the elderly dependency ratio, and its unusual pension policies that do not penalize pensioners for working. We use data from twenty surveys of the Russian population conducted from February 1991 to November 2007 to analyze the labor market participation and earnings of elderly Russians following market transition. Economic desperation, exacerbated by low pension levels, pushed some elderly to seek employment for income on the la

BACKGROUND: In 1936, like many individuals who felt the menace of fascism, George Orwell traveled to Spain to lend his support to the cause of the Republic, battling a right-wing coup. Spain, during its Civil War, was an eye-opening experience for him, yielding insights that allowed, and even compelled him to write Animal Farm and 1984. Spain was also a close brush with death. In May of 1937, in a trench on a windswept ridge near Huesca, Orwell was shot through the neck by a sniper, leaving him with a paralyzed vocal fold.
DESIGN: A thorough review of firsthand accounts of Orwell's injury and

The concept of 'sluggish schizophrenia' is virtually limited to the USSR and some other East European countries, and may contribute to the mis-diagnosis of democrats as psychiatric patients. Recently, a number of articles have appeared in the Soviet literature relating the diagnosis of 'sluggish schizophrenia' or 'slowly progressive schizophrenia' to affective disorders, especially hypomania. Soviet publications on this theme from 1980 to 1984 are discussed, together with their relationship to questions on the abuse of psychiatry.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) remains one of the most neglected public-health challenges in the Horn of Africa. This editorial highlights the ecological, social, and political determinants driving VL persistence across the Somali Peninsula, including Somalia, the Somali Region of Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya. It synthesises evidence on vector ecology, diagnostic and treatment gaps, and the humanitarian dimensions of disease vulnerability, arguing for a One Health, primary-care-anchored approach to prevention and control. The paper calls for renewed national commitment, regional coordination,

Childhood tuberculosis (TB) has been underreported and underrepresented in TB statistics across the globe. Contributing factors include health system barriers, diagnostic barriers, and community barriers leading to an underdetected epidemic of childhood tuberculosis. Despite considerable progress in childhood TB management, there is a concerning gap in policy and practice in high-burden countries leading to missed opportunities for active case detection, early diagnosis and treatment of TB exposure, and infection and disease in children regardless of human immunodeficiency virus status. BACKGROUND: Unmet need for contraception results in several health challenges such as unintended pregnancies, unwanted births and unsafe abortions. Most interventions have been unable to successfully address this unmet need due to various community and health system level factors. Identifying these inhibiting and enabling factors prior to implementation of interventions forms the basis for planning efforts to increase met needs. This qualitative study was part of the formative phase of a larger research project that aimed to develop an intervention to increase met needs for contraception throu

INTRODUCTION: Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) pose a significant public health threat in West Africa, contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly among vulnerable populations. This region is highly susceptible to the effects of climate change due to its geographical location, dependence on rain-fed agriculture, and fragile ecosystems. This narrative review explores the complex interplay between climate change and the escalating burden of VBDs, including malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and Lassa fever, to inform a coordinated regional response.

INTRODUCTION: Given the critical role of medicines in reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), we analysed factors that hinder the availability of quality medicines for managing NCDs at the point of service delivery, with a particular focus on low-income and middle-income countries.
METHODS: In this scoping review, literature published in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the World Bank eLibrary and the WHO's Institutional Repository for Information Sharing (WHO IRIS) was collected (January 2009-May 2025). Literature was excluded if it did not specifically address NCD medicines,

Mexico has one of the world's highest prevalence rates of elevated body weight among adults, with more than one-third of children and adolescents also affected. These patterns create major challenges for life expectancy, healthcare system sustainability, and long-term economic productivity. This article examines current patterns of elevated body weight in Mexico and their links with chronic disease. It explores the sociohistorical, political-economic, and cultural factors that have shaped these trends and critically evaluates President Claudia Sheinbaum's Healthy Republic Plan as a policy fram

Policy Points A decade after failing to make it into the Affordable Care Act, the public option reemerged as a health reform goal at both the national and state levels, with polls reporting strong, bipartisan support. A 2020 poll that probed both support for one public option approach (Medicare "buy-in") and attitudes toward government suggests that differences in these attitudes could plague reform advocates' efforts. Although the COVID-19 pandemic viscerally highlighted the need for a more coherent health care system-including universal coverage-other recent evolutions in the broader US poli

BACKGROUND: The beverage industry plays an influential role in the US. Certain beverages, such as sugar-sweetened, have long been recognized as key contributors to poor population health with inequitable impacts. In response, multiple US initiatives have attempted to address these problems through public awareness campaigns and policies, such as taxes. Yet, the persistent and increasing reliance on unhealthy commercial products produced by the beverage industry suggests additional progress is needed. Leveraging a systems thinking approach, this study aimed to map out the complex forces limitin

The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted the delivery of essential health services (EHS) worldwide, contributing to excess morbidity and mortality from preventable conditions. Some countries employed innovative strategies that may have enabled their health systems to be more resilient than others in responding to COVID-19. This cross-country analysis aimed to identify beneficial practices and policies employed by six low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America to maintain access to EHS while responding to COVID-19. Cross-country research partners (CCR
