INTRODUCTION: Wound healing is a complex and dynamic biological process involving hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and tissue remodeling. Conventional wound dressings provide only passive protection and fail to maintain an optimal healing microenvironment. This study used a biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with Chrysanthemum frutescens extract to create eco-friendly Packaging Films. The methanol extract was analysed for the main phenolic compounds; flavonoids and coumarins. PVA with 5% C. frutescens extract demonstrated the highest antimicrobial activity against B. cereus, E. coli, F. solani, and C. albicans with inhibition zones of 15, 25, 30, and 20 mm, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of PVA films incorporated with C. frutescens extract as effective eco-friendly antimicrobial packaging materials.

A 27-year-old G3P1 presented to the gynaecology emergency department with heavy vaginal bleeding for 16 days. Transvaginal ultrasound showed vascular cystic spaces in the myometrium raising a suspicion of choriocarcinoma. However, β-human chorionic gonadotrophin (β-hCG) was negative in both the urine and serum. Angiography confirmed the rarer diagnosis of uterine arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Successful abolition of the AVM was achieved by transcatheter embolisation with sequential use of polyvinyl alcohol particles, gel foam pledgets and platinum coils.

Forty-one dogs were subjected to percutaneous arterial embolization of branches of the renal artery or its main trunk with or without prior injury to the kidney, with eight different materials, i.e., homologous blood clot, muscle, fat, fascia, barium sulphate, plain catgut, gelfoam and polyvinyl alcohol (Ivalon). From the immediate observations made, as well as the haemodynamic, angiographic and histological studies over a period ranging from 24 h to several weeks, it was concluded that Ivalon was the best material for arterial embolization.

A case report of fatal sepsis after uterine artery embolization (UAE) with microspheres is presented. At autopsy, microspheres were found not only in arteries in the leiomyomata and myometrium but also in the parametria and the vagina, leading to a necrotic vaginal wall and uterine cervix. At present, polyvinyl alcohol particles are usually used in UAE. Recently, study results of the use of microspheres in embolization procedures have become available. The rationale for the choice of a specific embolization particle and the clinical implications of possible sepsis after UAE are discussed.
