The Prediction of Human Abdominal Adiposity Based on the Combination of a Particle Swarm Algorithm and Support Vector Machine.

Background: Abdominal adiposity is an important risk factor of chronic cardiovascular diseases, thus the prediction of abdominal adiposity and obesity can reduce the risks of contracting such diseases. However, the current prediction models display low accuracy and high sample size dependence. The purpose of this study is to put forward a new prediction method based on an improved support vector machine (SVM) to solve these problems. Methods: A total of 200 individuals participated in this study and were further divided into a modeling group and a test group. Their physiological parameters (he

Cortical development in fetuses with congenital heart defects using an automated brain-age prediction algorithm.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital heart defects are associated with neurodevelopmental delay. It is hypothesized that fetuses affected by congenital heart defect have altered cerebral oxygen perfusion and are therefore prone to delay in cortical maturation. The aim of this study was to determine the difference in fetal brain age between consecutive congenital heart defect cases and controls in the second and third trimester using ultrasound. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Since 2014, we have included 90 isolated severe congenital heart defect cases in the Heart And Neurodevelopment (HAND)-study. Every 4 weeks,

A novel learning algorithm to predict individual survival after liver transplantation for primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Deciding who should receive a liver transplant (LT) depends on both urgency and utility. Most survival scores are validated through discriminative tests, which compare predicted outcomes between patients. Assessing post-transplant survival utility is not discriminate, but should be "calibrated" to be effective. There are currently no such calibrated models. We developed and validated a novel calibrated model to predict individual survival after LT for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). We applied a software tool, PSSP, to adult patients in the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (n

Current clinical algorithms for predicting common bile duct stones have only moderate accuracy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: A risk-stratified approach for selecting patients likely to harbor common bile duct (CBD) stones to proceed directly to endoscopic or surgical stone clearance, rather than undergo less invasive testing, has been proposed. We assessed the performance of three clinical algorithms used to predict CBD stones. METHODS: All patients undergoing first-time endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in 2011-2012 as a result of suspected CBD stones were enrolled prospectively in a clinical database. Data such as imaging test findings and liver function tests (LFTs) were c

Machine Learning Algorithm Predicts Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Outcomes: Lessons From the COMPANION Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) reduces morbidity and mortality in heart failure patients with reduced left ventricular function and intraventricular conduction delay. However, individual outcomes vary significantly. This study sought to use a machine learning algorithm to develop a model to predict outcomes after CRT. METHODS AND RESULTS: Models were developed with machine learning algorithms to predict all-cause mortality or heart failure hospitalization at 12 months post-CRT in the COMPANION trial (Comparison of Medical Therapy, Pacing, and Defibrillation in Heart Failu

WINROP algorithm for prediction of sight threatening retinopathy of prematurity: Initial experience in Indian preterm infants.

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of the online monitoring tool, WINROP (https://winrop.com/) in detecting sight-threatening type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in Indian preterm infants. METHODS: Birth weight, gestational age, and weekly weight measurements of seventy preterm infants (<32 weeks gestation) born between June 2014 and August 2016 were entered into WINROP algorithm. Based on weekly weight gain, WINROP algorithm signaled an alarm to indicate that the infant is at risk for sight-threatening Type 1 ROP. ROP screening was done according to standard guidelines. The negative and

A predictive algorithm to identify genes that discriminate individuals with fibromyalgia syndrome diagnosis from healthy controls.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic and often debilitating condition that is characterized by persistent fatigue, pain, bowel abnormalities, and sleep disturbances. Currently, there are no definitive prognostic or diagnostic biomarkers for FMS. This study attempted to utilize a novel predictive algorithm to identify a group of genes whose differential expression discriminated individuals with FMS diagnosis from healthy controls. METHODS: Secondary analysis of gene expression data from 28 women with FMS and 19 age-and race-matched healthy women. Expression of discriminatory ge

Predicting local malaria exposure using a Lasso-based two-level cross validation algorithm.

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of local environmental factors to determine the fine-scale heterogeneity of malaria transmission and exposure to the vector. In this work, we compare a classical GLM model with backward selection with different versions of an automatic LASSO-based algorithm with 2-level cross-validation aiming to build a predictive model of the space and time dependent individual exposure to the malaria vector, using entomological and environmental data from a cohort study in Benin. Although the GLM can outperform the LASSO model with appropriate engineering, the

Biopsy-Free Prediction of Pathologic Type of Primary Nephrotic Syndrome Using a Machine Learning Algorithm.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Renal biopsy is the gold standard to determine the pathologic type of primary nephrotic syndrome, which is critical for diagnosis, choice of treatment and evaluation of prognosis. However, in some cases, renal biopsy cannot be performed. METHODS: To explore the possibility of predicting the histology type of primary nephrotic syndrome without the need for biopsy, we trained and validated a machine learning algorithm using data from 222 patients with biopsy-confirmed primary nephrotic syndrome treated at our hospital between May 2008 and January 2016. The model was then tested

The PROPKD Score: A New Algorithm to Predict Renal Survival in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease.

The course of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) varies among individuals, with some reaching ESRD before 40 years of age and others never requiring RRT. In this study, we developed a prognostic model to predict renal outcomes in patients with ADPKD on the basis of genetic and clinical data. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1341 patients from the Genkyst cohort and evaluated the influence of clinical and genetic factors on renal survival. Multivariate survival analysis identified four variables that were significantly associated with age at ESRD onset, and a scoring sy

Prediction of severe retinopathy of prematurity using the WINROP algorithm in a birth cohort in South East Scotland.

PURPOSE: We tested the ability of the 'Weight, IGF-1, Neonatal Retinopathy of Prematurity (WINROP)' clinical algorithm to detect preterm infants at risk of severe Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in a birth cohort in the South East of Scotland. In particular, we asked the question: 'are weekly weight measurements essential when using the WINROP algorithm?' STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study. Anonymised clinical data were uploaded to the online WINROP site, and infants at risk of developing severe ROP were identified. The results using WINROP were compared with the actual ROP

Neonatal balloon aortic valvuloplasty-predictive value of current risk score algorithms for treatment strategies.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal valvular aortic stenosis (AoS) represents a spectrum of different degrees of hypoplasia and malformation of all left heart structures. Uncertainty exists on threshold values for biventricular circulation of newborns with critical AoS. Our aim was to assess the predictive value of current risk scores for treatment strategies in critical AoS. METHODS AND RESULTS: The echocardiograms of all newborns with AoS treated by balloon valvuloplasty (AoVP) or Norwood operation between January 2006 and September 2008 were reviewed retrospectively and the Rhodes-, Colan-score and the u

A digital filterbank hearing aid: predicting user preference and performance for two signal processing algorithms.

OBJECTIVE: In a series of experiments with a wearable binaural digital hearing aid, two hearing aid processing algorithms were compared. Both algorithms provided individual frequency shaping via a seven-band filterbank with compression limiting in the high-frequency channel. They differed in the processing of the low-frequency channel, using dynamic range compression for one (DynEar) and linear processing with compression limiting for the other (LinEar). In a pilot field test we found that LinEar/ DynEar preference based on use time could be predicted from auditory dynamic range data. For the

Prediction of outcome in critically ill patients using artificial neural network synthesised by genetic algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Decisions about which patients to admit to intensive care and how long to keep them there are difficult. A flexible computer-based mathematical model which is sensitive to the complexity of intensive care medicine, and which accurately models prognosis, seems highly desirable. METHODS: We have created, optimised by genetic algorithms, trained, and evaluated the performance of an artificial neural network (ANN) in the clinical setting of systemic inflammatory response syndrome and haemodynamic shock. 258 patients were selected from an intensive care database of 4484 patients at a L
