Practical protocols for the prevention of dental disease in community settings for people with special needs: the protocols.

People with special needs have more dental disease and more missing teeth than the general population. They also have reduced access to oral health diagnostic, preventive, interceptive and treatment services. If services are available, they can be complicated and costly. It is critical to prevent dental diseases in these individuals. This article presents a set of practical protocols for preventing dental disease in people with special needs. These protocols are designed to be used in community settings outside of a dental office.

Scaling up vaccination for people living in prisons: a global person-centred need for public health.

BACKGROUND: People living in prison (PLP) are at increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases due to overcrowding, high turnover, and limited healthcare access. Vaccination is a cost-effective preventive intervention, yet coverage in prisons remains inconsistent and frequently absent from national immunisation strategies. OBJECTIVE: To develop evidence-based guidance to strengthen vaccination services in prisons, ensuring equity, continuity of care, and alignment with international public health standards. METHODS: The EU-funded RISE-Vac project employed a multistage approach, including tw

Has COVID19 derailed Bhutan's national malaria elimination goal? A commentary.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in massive global disruptions with considerable impact on the delivery of health services and national health programmes. Since the detection of the first COVID-19 case on 5th March 2020, the Royal Government of Bhutan implemented a number of containment measures including border closure and national lockdowns. Against the backdrop of this global COVID-19 pandemic response, there was a sudden surge of locally-transmitted malaria cases between June to August 2020. There were 20 indigenous cases (zero Plasmodium falciparum and 20 Plasmodium vivax) from a total

Implementation outcomes of policy and programme innovations to prevent obstetric haemorrhage in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

Globally, obstetric haemorrhage (OH) remains the leading cause of maternal mortality. Much of the associated mortality is ascribed to challenges surrounding deployment of innovations rather than lack of availability. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where the burden is highest, there is a growing interest in implementation research as a means to bridge the 'know-do' gap between proven interventions and their reliable implementation at scale. In this systematic review, we identified and synthesized qualitative and quantitative data across the implementation outcomes of OH prevention

Breast cancer control programme in developing countries.

Breast cancer is a very important health problem in developing countries, where its incidence has increased in the last decades. Mortality rates due to breast cancer have also increased, and the main reason for this is late diagnosis. The authors demonstrate that organizing programmes for early breast cancer detection is possible by making use of simple resources. A set of tiered interventions is proposed, stratified in levels of complexity: Level 1--Identification of abnormal breast by health professionals; Level 2--Medical assistance to women whose breast is considered abnormal, in order to

Preventive adolescent health care in family practice: a program summary.

The AMA Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services (GAPS) has been the cornerstone of preventive care for teenagers since its publication in 1994. Despite this, there has been little documentation of their implementation in the family medicine literature. This article gives an overview of a family practice-based adolescent preventive health program based on GAPS recommendations, and reports on compliance, feasibility and health issues. A Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) program targeted all adolescent patients aged 12-18 years in two Israeli family practices. 321 teenagers were invite

[Practice of precocious diagnosis for prostate cancer among professors of the school of medicine, Minas Gerais Federal University- Brazil].

BACKGROUND: The authors studied the practice of precocious diagnosis for prostate cancer among 289 professor-physicians of the School of Medicine, Minas Gerais Federal University, Brazil. METHODS: Replies on these preventive practices were received from 135 professor-physicians through a confidential questionnaire administered. RESULTS: Results show that 20.7% of the professor-physicians "fifty-one years old or more" never had a prostate preventive exam and 36.2% never had a rectal touch. CONCLUSIONS: This data suggests the need for additional investigation and the attention of the health s

Population-centered Risk- and Evidence-based Dental Interprofessional Care Team (PREDICT): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: To improve the oral health of low-income children, innovations in dental delivery systems are needed, including community-based care, the use of expanded duty auxiliary dental personnel, capitation payments, and global budgets. This paper describes the protocol for PREDICT (Population-centered Risk- and Evidence-based Dental Interprofessional Care Team), an evaluation project to test the effectiveness of new delivery and payment systems for improving dental care and oral health. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a parallel-group cluster randomized controlled trial. Fourteen rural Oregon cou

Barriers to infectious disease care among lesbians.

Despite the considerable number of women in the United States who identify as lesbian, few data exist that address lesbians' health needs. The Institute of Medicine emphasized that data on sexually transmitted infections, Pap smear screening, and cervical dysplasia among lesbians were needed to guide clinical practice, policy development, and patient education. Use of surveillance data for this purpose is limited because risk classifications exclude same-gender sex among women or subsume it under behavior considered as higher risk. However, sexual transmission of human papillomavirus, HIV, Tre

Measures to reduce the infant mortality rate in Tanzania.

Tanzanian health problems reflect those in other developing countries where the standard of living is low and housing and sanitation are inadequate. The major cause of infant mortality can be attributed to preventable diseases such as gastroenteritis, acute respiratory infections and malnutrition. In spite of the fact that various efforts have been made to extend primary health care coverage, particularly in rural areas, the scarcity of economic resources impedes the implementation of many health programmes. However, only by maintaining primary health care as a major part of the country's deve

The WHF Roadmap for Reducing CV Morbidity and Mortality Through Prevention and Control of RHD.

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a preventable non-communicable condition that disproportionately affects the world's poorest and most vulnerable. The World Heart Federation Roadmap for improved RHD control is a resource designed to help a variety of stakeholders raise the profile of RHD nationally and globally, and provide a framework to guide and support the strengthening of national, regional and global RHD control efforts. The Roadmap identifies the barriers that limit access to and uptake of proven interventions for the prevention and control of RHD. It also highlights a variety of establ

Population-Based Health Engagement Opportunities Through Breast Imaging: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Survey.

PURPOSE: As health care payment systems transition from fee-for-service to bundled payments, there is an increasing opportunity for radiologists to collaborate to improve population-based health care outcomes. Our purpose was to estimate the extent to which patients engaged in mammography underwent other additional imaging- and non-imaging-based preventative health services using Centers for Disease Control National Population Health Surveys. METHODS: Women aged 40 to 74 in the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System cross-sectional survey without histories of breast cancer who report

Integration of testing for, prevention of, and access to treatment for HIV infection: state and local perspectives.

Individuals vary by socioeconomic status, race, geographic location, access to health care, risk for exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and other co-occurring conditions, making it difficult to reach those who are at high risk for HIV infection. At the state and local levels, health departments often struggle to provide HIV prevention and care services, because of inadequate funding, fragmented systems, and a host of federal and state regulations. State and local health departments, however, have become adept at providing a patchwork of services despite these challenges. This repo
